Okay, I have a little bit of a hot take (At least I'm pretty sure it's one) that I will share.

I think that the ending of Death Note is actually a suitable ending to the story.

Hot take: Demon Slayer isn't actually that bad, it just has simple and direct themes and most people can't handle that. (I'm not saying the writing is perfect, but it's not badly written it's just rough around the edges).

Niche Hot Take: Trigun Stampede is a good reboot and just needs a little work on the pacing.

What are your favorites?

My experience in anime/manga is unfortunately not super broad (and the amount of stuff I can actually recommend to people is even lower because, you know, a lot of Japanese media isn't exactly known for being the most appropriate) It's honestly super unfortunate, because there's a bunch of excellent stories I can't recommend to people and probably shouldn't have read in the first place just because of one or two scenes or arcs. Highly disappointing. There is a lot of good stuff though, even if sometimes you kinda just have to put on a hefty mental filter.

I always think of Fullmetal alchemist as a great example of the manga being the best version of the story. It has too anime adaptations, one better then the other, but both don't tell the story with it's original pacing and all of the correct scenes. So, I feel like the manga is best just because it tells the story in the most complete way.

But I often gravitate towards manga in general because I prefer experiencing the story through the direct way the original artist intended. Anime adaptations can be very very good, but sometimes a little of the magic is lost when you don't get to the see the original panels which are half of the story telling. I never finished the MuShiShi anime, but I read the whole manga and the manga was sooo much better. The anime was just a basic story with somewhat poor animation, but the manga was beautiful drawn and much more poetic. Maybe because I want to draw my own comics someday, I analyze the craftsmanship of manga more closely. There are also certain stylistic choices that can't be reflected in anime. Like Witch Hat Atelier, which is drawn in an intricate, almost art nouveua style but from the one anime trailer we have, it looks like it'll be greatly simplified for the sake of animation.

This is so true! I think both me and my older brother have a hard time recommending stuff to each other because of one or two unnecessary scenes. I recently read a really great manga with a few of those scenes (that I felt comfortable reading because it wasn't explicit and made sense in the story from a practical viewpoint), but I don't know if I could ever recommend it lol

ending to death note was probably the only way it could have ended. it was the best possible ending for all involved.

My favorite manga is Vinland Saga, and my favorite story alongside Stormlight Archive. It's epic and tragic and beautiful, and it really has something meaningful to say. A bunch of my favorite characters ever, too! The anime is great as well, but I think it's a bit too colorful for such a rather grim and mostly pretty realistic story. Very, very close to the manga though.

From what I've gathered, most people are satisfied with how the story ends, it's just that to many, the way to get there feels less convincing compared to the first two thirds of the story, which are pretty much non-stop thrilling and a pretty high bar to maintain.

I think that's a fair assessment of the standing of the Death Note ending in the eyes of people. I personally feel that it was the most reasonable way for it to end because (spoilers):

Spoiler

Light effectively gets rejected by his own ideology. Mikami rejects the idea that Light is a god. Matsuda, the most sympathetic policeman to the ideas of Kira, rejects Light and goes after him with a gun. Ryuk, the Shinigami, who admittedly always said he was only along for the show, turns against Light and seals his fate once he no longer can win. These factors come together that show that Light was never a deity raining down justice on the evil, he was just a crazy mass-murderer with the smarts and means to get away with it for a long time.

The manga adopts a cruel approach to Light's death. He dies there in the warehouse bloodied on the floor. The panels severely contrast with the usual image we see of light, where he is confident, tall, and in control. The panels at the end of the manga contrast this, because he is on the floor, crawling to find any kindness in the people he was disregarding in entirety mere moments before.

The anime is a lot more sympathetic to Light. It uses kind lights and allows him to escape the warehouse, and he eventually dies on the stairs, looking not defeated or groveling, but looking tired and worn out. This ending shows how Light was just a kid who wanted to change the world for the better, and how he could have had a wonderful life if such a power had not been dropped in his lap.

Anyway, about Vinland Saga, I've never read it. However, I would be curious to do that at some point. What is the content like? Because if it's highly inappropriate or insanely violent I might not be so inclined to read it, even though I've heard some excellent things.

I agree with your Death Note analysis! Regarding Vinland Saga, it's a story that is to a large degree "about" the topic of violence, like, why people do it, what it does to the victims and what it does to those who commit it ... and it doesn't shy away from depicting violence in ways that for example Brandon would shy away from, but it's also not sensationalist or overly gory. It also touches some trigger-warning-worthy topics (as a huge theme of it is slavery), but doesn't depict those openly like GOT or Berserk. Soo, it's hard to really say ... It's heavy by the necessity of its themes but there's a line it never crosses. If a realistic battle sequence with all the things that can entail would be a no-go for you, I'd advise against it. But it's no torture porn, which is where my personal line is.

If that's the case, then I'll probably read it when I can find the time. Thanks for informing me! I greatly appreciate it. I've seen some of the panels on the internet before, and the fans say such great things about it, so I'm definitely quite curious.
