"It has been my observation that both June and July are..." she paused, thinking how she wanted to word it. "More productive," she decided, "when they are together. More efficient."

She seemed cold, but that was only because her emotions were hidden. She was desperate to try to protect July and August- without seeming biased.

8 minutes ago, Exotic Almond said:

"So we should what? Punish both? That doesn't seem fair."

6 minutes ago, Spark of Hope said:

"That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying, dismissing July would cause a lack of motivation, effort, and productivity in June."

3 minutes ago, Exotic Almond said:

"We're going to dismiss July? Why? That seems harsh."

3 minutes ago, Spark of Hope said:

"No, I'm saying we shouldn't."

The emperor considered this for a moment. "I understand your point, April, however the reality is that most of June's current duties don't involve July at all, he could live without him, if need be."

June visibly tensed, but didn't say anything.

She closed her mouth and nodded slightly in understanding. She had to focus more on not letting her worry show.

April looked at the emperor. No matter what any of them said, it was his verdict that really mattered.

"I agree with December's point that their punishments should be different," The emperor finally said. "It would only make sense that July should face greater consequences because his violation was more severe."

"You always go easy on August with this sort of thing," October grumbled.

"That's because August is a valuable asset to the kingdom," December replied, her words loaded with something deeper.

"How is he a valuable asset if he's constantly pulling things like this?" March asked flippantly. "He does nothing but waste our time, I could've been working on other things during all the time it took us to find him and drag him back."

"Other things like what? You're petty duels and politics? If anything he's finally getting you to do something responsible." December growled back at him.

"It's not like that was his intention," Tober mumbled. Even the large imposing man looked intimidated by December.

"Perhaps not, but that is the outcome."

She looked at August, then July. Agh! Why did the others have to be here? She wanted to show him she was trying to help him-

But that conversation, those words...

I worry about your biases, child. We will work through this when they return.

Her biases... of course she was biased towards them! The only two who'd ever really felt like siblings to her, who tried to make her feel at home. Well... June had for a while, but they'd long since fallen out.

July, I'm really trying to help you, but I'm already going to be reprimanded as is... I'm so sorry....

All these thoughts, and still her face showed none of it.

Arke drops down from the ceiling, walks up to the king, and writes down something on a piece of paper, then gives that paper to him.

Basically they're discussing how July should be punished

May/April/December have openly expressed not being in favor of him being disowned.

March and October complained that August gets by without drastic punishment, which is because he's invaluable to the emperor's politics

The guards step forward uneasily, but the emperor waves them aside.

"What's this?" He asked, unfolding the paper to read it.

good for the guards, they would be writhing on the ground in pain if they tried to stop him lol.

It reads "My name is Arke. I am a Shenai assassin. I want to offer my services. also, I think August is cool, even if he did betray you and everything, he's a good man, and he's a good fighter. but that's beside the point. I'm offering my skills as an infiltrator and assassin."

yes, he went on a tangent of how he thinks August is cool because he's just that kind of kid.

"This is one of the accomplices you arrested, March?"

"Yes Father, this one was particularly violent and tried to get between me and the arrest."

"I see," He turned back to Arke. "Unfortunately, I have no need of your services, especially considering so far you've only used them to antagonize my children."

Rye stood as still as possible, trying to make sure the emperor wouldn't notice all the little bulges in his clothing where he was hiding weapons.

he shrugs, takes a couple steps back, then does a back handspring over the king, using the top of the throne as a jumping point and spider climbs his way to the ceiling.

🤣 this child

The emperor watches him go up without a word. In fact he looked concerned Arke might fall.

April's eyes looked at each member of the party, July being the last one she looked at, and for longer than the others. She looked back at the Emperor.

October cleared his throat.

"If I may, I think that July could serve under me for a time--he needs more experience in the world and I can make it punishing enough."

June frowned, speaking for the first time. "July isn't a fighter, you can't take him to war!"

"From what I've heard of his resistance to arrest, he's fighter enough."

"October," August intervened, voice calm, "He'll be more of nuisance then a help."

"You're just trying to save him August, don't think you're being clever--worry about your own skin."

August frowned.

December leaned over to shake the shoulder of the man sitting next to her. He was wearing ostentatious robes, and a large scar covered the left half of his olive face. The entire meeting before then he'd been staring off into space, not seeing and not moving at all.

When he didn't respond, December just shrugged and turned away from him.

"Enough bickering," January said curtly, "Let's just come to a conclusion, restrictions on August and 3 spans of servitude for July. All in favor?"

"3 span?!" October asked, outraged. "He'll do more then 3 span, thank you very much."

"August should face bigger consequences then just mild restrictions, he's not a child he's a criminal," March grumbled under his breath.

3-! She'd have to be away from him that long?!

Is a span closer to a year or a month?
