"Wait, no, don't go up there!" Niamh yelled after the men as they ran up the stairs with their torches.

They paid her no heed as they chased the wild-eyed man, and the rest of the people in the tavern began to leave as smoke filled the air.

Aargh! she thought angrily. Why can't people just think for once!

She set her fiddle and bow on the stool and ran quickly up the stairs after the men.

Does it seem to anyone else like something is going to catch on fire soon?

Edit: Looking up how flammable rum and whiskey are...

Edit edit: I now know way too much about the burning properties of alcoholic drinks. I'm going to assume the whiskey in the tavern is at least 50% ABV.

This should be fun.

Strangely, there were no workers in sight. Moments later, a man - presumably the owner of the tavern - was shoving a man through the door, followed by a crowd carrying torches. The man’s paper, however, was safe with the girl upstairs.

@WildRye

The owner had locked the door. Every night, he put her in her room and locked the door. Once in, there was no way for her to get out.

Jolane sighed, watching the torches through her tiny window, circled around the man who’d given her the paper.

Nothing caught on fire?

Dang. All that research for nothin'. 😆

Niamh sat against the wall, watching the crowd surround the man outside. This had turned out to be quite the odd night.

Well, she supposed it was time to collect her payment from the tavern owner.

She walked upstairs and knocked on the door. "Hello? Is anyone there?"

Rye tried to wriggle out of the crude ropes the mob had bound him with, but to no avail. He snarled and tried to bite one of them instead.

"SEE? SPAWN OF THE DEMON KING!" the leader of the witch hunters yelled, hitting Rye over the head with a club. The captive slumped unconscious. "I apologize for the ruckus," he says to the innkeeper. "The name's Nelon, by the way."

He raised his voice so that everyone could hear. "I invite you to come to Issor to watch this witch's public execution in 1 week's time! We will see this land purged of evil, I promise!" The rest of the witch hunters cheered, then began walking into the distance, dragging Rye with them. Inside the inn, a casual observer might now notice the black soot stains covering the ceiling and upper walls. The paper Rye gave Jolane was folded and yellowed with age, but the things scrawled onto it were clear. A map of the town the inn was in, with a red "X" marking a spot nearby. In cramped, messy handwriting beneath were these words:

Here you will find my cache, where I have hidden the weapons. To whomever I have given this paper to, I would like you to uncover this hideout and secure my inventions. Make sure the witch hunters never suspect you or find the cache themselves. I suppose if you are reading this, I have been finally captured and am bound for the stake. Well, I bid you farewell.

Souls walks over, wiping a dirty cup, and pours some rum into the cup, sets the keg on the ground, and rolls it out the door.

I have dubbed the tavern keeper "Robert."

You're all welcome.

After reading it, she hid it again. He had entrusted it to her, but there was not much she could do. She’d heard the announcement of his execution, and though she did not know him, it was devastating to her.

Of course she was. Why would someone be there for her?

”He was just downstairs,” she said. Behind the locked door, her head hung. No, no one really noticed her. Why would they.

“Nope. Don’t have the faintest idea.” Souls leans in conspiratorially, “we’re also out of clean glasses”

Ma'tani sighed. Public execution? This country was so...barbaric. At least sometimes.

Well, I guess I have to stick around her for at least a week, now...

She walked over to the bar. "Hey, can I get a room for the night?"

I’m doing the owner for… reasons related to backstory

“It’ll be ten schlaff per night,” the owner said, which was a decent price.

Shoutout to Exotic Almond for coming up with schlaff

Ma'tani shrugged. Could be worse. She handed over twelve schlaff.

"The extra two is for a warm meal and some water. Do you think you could have someone get me that?"

Tell Almond I said hi, and he'd better be marching in-time, or the ancient retribution of Drum Major [realname] is going to fall upon him.

I told him to read these pages and maybe join, so he can read your threat himself! 😊

And come on. That was last year, not ancient Greece. Stop being so dramatic.

That's my job

"Easily. Please wait here a moment." He went up the stairs and unlocked the door to the small room.

Jolane looked up from where she sat on the floor mat. This was unusual.

The owner, Robert, said in that other tongue, "Get a room ready for a guest. Food's being cooked, bring it and a glass of water to the room when it's done."

She nodded and rose to her feet. At least this would make her think of things other than her thoughts. She moved and started prepping a room around the middle of the hall.

Robert came back down the stairs and grabbed a key for the room. He turned to Ma'tani. "If you'll follow me."

She nodded politely and did so. As she headed for the stairs to the upper rooms, she gave a last glance to the common room of the inn. Filled with interesting people. People with secrets.

Perhaps this town was going to get a little louder over the next few days...

The owner stopped at an open door and held out the key for her. Jolane exited the room and went down the stairs to the kitchen.
