Koloss17 She/They Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 (edited) Okay so first off big ups to @Stormlightsong for planting this idea. It’s put us both down quite the rabbit hole So A-gold lets you see an alternate self, kind of like a possible future of yourself if you were getting a burst of fortune and looking into the future 10 years ago. Like if in the past, you looked into the future, and saw a potential you…okay it’s weird. Alternate self, something to do with fortune, but in a way that we really haven’t seen before. Point is, while burning A-gold, you are both yourself and your alternate self. You see through both eyes, you think both thoughts. …you have both of their memories, right? So if you were to catalogue and store those memories, you could collect information of things that you have no business knowing, with a real potential of those memories being applicable in the present world. And not only that, you are getting memories that you never had. You’re breaking the end neutrality of feruchemy. It’s probably the only way to reverse compound F-copper without using an unsealed metalmind. (If you aren’t familiar with what I call reverse compounding, it’s using feruchemy to get more out of allomancy, and it’s pretty much the only way to become a feruchemantic savant) here’s a brief list of some examples: So what do y’all think? Have we finally broken A-Gold? Would this even work? A-Gold is weird, and so is F-Copper. I’m sure they will be explored more, but right now, we have such little information about the two of them. JustQuestin2004 he/him Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Makes enough sense to me, we've only seen it being used twice throughout seven books, and both times seemed to have the user experience two different sets of memories at once, which is very disorientating, Using F-Copper to gather more information from your own Gold Shadows seems like a pretty novel use, also useful for getting past how emotionally distressing it tends to be, just store the memory of you doing it away until you need it. Of course, there are likely to be limits on what kind of info you could gleam from them, since both times it showed a different self that diverged some time ago with no actual control over it. Maybe becoming a Gold Savant would let you control what type of past you see? Like if you were at cross-roads, then picked a path, you could use A-Gold to see what the other paths could have been like? Then store away the experiences in your Coppermind. A combination that if you made a story about it, it would have you examine your every choice, thinking over what you did and could have done, someone very heavily stuck in the past. The definition of introspective. 2
Through the Living Heir he/him Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 This is a fun idea. Depending upon how much control you have over gold shadows, you could look for something like “what if I decided to tap all my copperminds”, then store those memories, duplicating the storage. You could go to a library, roll a dice to pick what book you read and store, then burn a bunch of gold for memories of all the books. Only issue is that it might go through lots of gold at once. Now I really want to see someone make a choose your own adventure fan fiction with a gold burner, who can see other story paths. 1
Steel Speedster ♂ Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 That would be really interesting. It seems possible, but there’s a bunch on unknowns here. For one thing, do you have access to both sets of memories? If so, F-copper shouldn’t be necessary strictly speaking. It seems like you remember the experience from both perspectives afterwards, so if you, as the gold shadow, focus on bringing certain memories to mind, you might be able to retain them even without F-copper. Of course, if you are an Archivist, you might as well use it. Another consideration is, could you transfer the memories to your real self, or would attempting to store them simply place them in the shadow’s coppermind, where they will be lost once it disappears? Alternatively, since you can touch your gold shadow, maybe you could tap its coppermind. You would have the same Identity, so that wouldn’t be a problem, but maybe the gold shadow is too much of an illusion for that to work. Anyway, if it does work, this would definitely have some useful applications. It would be similar to electrum in some ways (without combat applications, of course.) The main difference is that electrum lets you see a fixed distance into the future, and all information must be gleaned from what your shadows do, whereas memory dumping all your gold shadows memories into your head gives you a lot more details, but the information is all from an alternate past, which may or may not be relevant. Additionally, electrum can only show you things within your line of sight, whereas gold could give you information about something on the other side of town. As other people have pointed out, you would need some control over what shadows you see in order for it to be super useful, because otherwise you’ll have a hard time finding the information you’re looking for. 1
Regnarts Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 I was toying with an idea of a con man duo: - A+F-Zinc compounder (Rioter-Sparker) - A+F-Gold compounder (Augur-Bloodmaker) The second one was based on an idea, that a A-Gold savant or a Gold compounder could maybe interact, converse with his alter egos. So not really get their memories, but rather consult with them. Of course, an alter-doctor or alter-engineer would not be too fond of a con man, maybe see him as somewhat of a dissapointment. What do you think?

Gold Compounding gives you unlimited health, the Feruchemical attribute, but wouldn't do anything to improve the Allomantic power. However, there's definitely some potential for a gold savant. I would imagine that a gold savant could, at the very least, control what gold shadow appears. If you could actually talk to the gold shadow, that would definitely be useful, though, as you mentioned, depending on the shadow, it might not cooperate. 1
