Vin(Diesel) Posted July 23, 2024 Posted July 23, 2024 The Sibling is annoying. Yes, they’ve suffered. Yes, they’ve been mistreated by humans, and they may have a point about the captured spren in fabrials. But part of growing up is learning to see beyond your own issues, and to see multiple sides of things and of people. The Sibling spends RoW refusing to think about anything but what is essentially an animal rights issue and about their own grievances and fears during the LITERAL END OF THE WORLD. Navani has to be patient with the Sibling because she can’t risk alienating them. And yes, only jerks are impatient with people whose faults are the result of suffering, but there’s a limit to that, and the Sibling passed that limit miles ago. Navani sees the big picture when the Sibling refuses to, and it’s because Navani is the bigger person and sees the necessities of the situation when the Sibling refuses to that she doesn’t just tell the Sibling to shove off. Sorry. I’m rereading Rhythm of War, and I wanted to vent. 3
Quantus he/him Posted July 23, 2024 Posted July 23, 2024 Counter point: the last interaction the Sibling has with Humans was when they forced the Sibling to be complicit in the spiritual Mutilation of the entire Singer race, and in a time when their Father, Honor, was entirely convinced that Humans would CAUSE the Literal End of the World. Also, spren generally dont Change absent outside influences the way Humans do (something Honor forgot with the Heralds, to everyone's harm), so expecting the Sibling to have Changed to a more human outlook over the years of their death/hibernation isnt really in the cards for a Spren by their very Nature. 6
Treamayne Posted July 23, 2024 Posted July 23, 2024 You may want to consider adding a Support tag to the thread Title - especially if this is a thread for venting (and I cannot blame you there) Something like "[Support] The Sibling was being obnoxious" to make it clear you are just venting during a read, and the thread is not meant for either spoilers or debating the point (which would be a [Discuss] tag). Not that we expect derailed threads, but it never hurts to take precautions early and to make the thread's point clear to people coming late to the discussion (in case they are skipping straight to page 2+). 4 hours ago, Vin(Diesel) said: The Sibling is annoying. Very much like an adolescent - which may have been a purposeful characterization from Brandon - but that did not make the interactions less annoying at times. Which makes me hope that they will progress in a way similar to WoK Syl - gaining maturity to their Sapience as Navani's Oaths progress. 4

Agreed - I think this is the answer. Just look at the Stormfather. Through his bond with Dalinar he has grown considerably from the spren we first met. I found the Stormfather to be annoying in the beginning as well. He clearly is holding back knowledge and power that he only gives because he feels like he has to. Whereas towards the end of OB and ROW he seems to be fully engaging with Dalinar. 4

There is a level of natural arrogance shared by adolescents and deities, but also a type of fragility and pain avoidance. They don't always react well when presented with logically sound evidence that conflicts with their own feelings. Kind of a "I SHOULDNT HAVE TO FEEL PAIN" type of thing. It makes more sense if you have every tried to get a sick child to cooperate. The Sibling also woke up to a pretty traumatic situation, which got progressively worse as they were forced to cooperate with humans. 5
