  1. 1. What do you want to happen to this RP when the current plotline ends?

    • Start another RP of the same characters, like a season 2
      3
    • Keep going with no plan at all
      0
    • Make new characters and have an RP of a similar concept, but, effectively with a new party
      3
    • End the RP (THIS ONE BETTER NOT WIN BUT I FELT I HAD TO ADD IT ANYWAYS)
      1

Tenth watches the interview curiously. He loses interest and begins to study the city around them.

Once Nick is done with Aki’s interview, he starts on Tenth’s. And, like with Aki, he wants to know all about your magic, technology, and contact with other planets.

Tenth explains that his world was ruled by a group known as the Giants, one of which he was. He explained that they had the ability to be transported between their planets in the solar system, and had access to advanced AI and early quantum computing.

Oh, so you just have a bunch of people named Tenth and/or I’m confused; Nick would love to get his hands on those strand things.

Apparently Nick’s world invented a warp drive and made contact with several species of intelligent aliens, forming the Interstellar Intelligent Species Council, or IISC. Supposedly microbes are moderately common, on around 1 in ten potentially habitable planets, but then few of those microbes evolve further, and few of those further-evolved lifeforms actually end up continuing to evolve instead of stagnating, and few non-stagnating biospheres have intelligent species, and few - one in 13 - intelligent species develop interstellar travel. So the fact that Tenth’s solar system has another planet with complex, sapient life is huge; even with different Goldilocks zones for different biochemistries, only two known intelligent species shared a system, and those two were on a single planet.

Oh lol. No that’s smt else…

The other Tenth is short for Tenth Square, because he had no name, merely an identification number. That number included 2.5, which is a tenth of a perfect square.

And believe me. The Strands are nice. But the other one, (named the Casts, but I haven’t said that b4) is muuuuuuuch more practical and applicable.

I didn’t really create them to be equal.

Tenth of the Giants, my character here, is from a different spacefaring society/universe, and is name Tenth of the Giants because he is the tenth in an oligarchical group.

That makes sense.

Nick is considering whether it’s actually a good idea to give Tenth access to the technology. He doesn’t want xenosuits misused.

Nick is still wondering about what the Giants found on the other planets, and why they decided to conquer them.

sssshhhh

Tenth needed to conquer them because… because the First told him to. Was there any better reason?

Nick’s expression clouds a bit upon realizing quite how much power this First has. Of course, maybe it was a better situation than that of the IISC.
SIMON picks that exact moment to tell Nick Tenth’s xenosuit is ready. “Alright, your suit is ready.” Nick tears a strip of biofabric off his own suit and hands it to Tenth. “This will need to grow; I think we should gather some biomass before go. I’ll need to make you a computer to run it - right now we can patch SIMON onto the helmet.”

Do you know how the suit works, or shall I look for my explanation in my very long world-building document?

I wrote far more about xenosuits than I’d intended, but I’m done.

  Reveal hidden contents

Xenosuits are biotech suits designed for other planets. Their main functions are preventing exchange of bacteria or toxic biochemicals between the wearer and the environment, cycling and acquiring needed resources, and protecting the wearer from the environment by dynamically adapting to it. It consists of a collection of several programmable life forms hotwired together, which allows it to create most needed compounds given energy, materials, and time. This is one of the most important limiting factors of the xenosuit; in many conditions, despite its absurd efficiency and speed, it cannot access enough materials to create a needed function. Given already existing biomass, or simply raw carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen (it could use other materials, but the result would be poisonous to a human), it can make useful tools quickly.

A good rule of thumb to follow is earth biology; if something on earth can do it, the xenosuit can do it too, generally better. The xenosuit itself (Nick has a few other tools, the most useful of which is the modified Ferrian microbes, which let him reconfigure metal and create electronics) can make things that are springy and strong (like green wood), stiff and strong (but still breakable), muscle-like (allowing moving parts), and fabric-like (it can duplicate most fabric textures). These structures, especially the fabric, can be laced with insulation and xenosuit cells performing functions, such as photosynthesis. Cells can also produce biochemicals such as sedatives, antibiotics, corrosives, or food, which can then be used. The xenosuit cells can be set up like viruses, injected into the bloodstream to produce the desired biochemical. If the wearer allows it, the xenosuit can directly supply them with oxygen, food, and water, which allows more efficient circulation and, in the case of oxygen, giving the wearer increased endurance. The outermost layer of the xenosuit is typically set up to take in resources, oftentimes growing disposable roots that, when they are no longer needed, are broken down again. The surface is also generally covered in light receptors, which allow rudimentary vision in all directions, and color cells, which can change their color over time. The hood typically contains a conventional electronic speaker, microphone, and camera, as they are more compact than the biological version, and quickly adheres to itself and seals when donned. Nick’s suit uses a convoluted set of muscle and spring-like components to allow it to cover his head and seal on its own.

The suit generally has layers to protect the wearer. Although the suit can be made bulletproof relatively easily, a layer that is tear resistant, fireproof, and practical is yet to be found. Thus, xenosuits cannot protect against fire and cutting at the same time; if they are layered the attacks can be alternated, piercing a layer each time. In order for the xenosuit to function properly, the stacking is limited to around two of those layers; if corrosion is also an issue, only one of each can be included. Another failing is sheer overwhelm; something such as a railgun round, a lightning bolt, or simply a falling boulder can get past the protection. Although any of those could be protected against, particularly the lightning (faraday cages aren’t that hard to make, the preparations are slow and the needed structures cumbersome. Despite these failings, the xenosuit has other useful applications in combat. It can stabilize injuries by replacing lost blood, stanching blood flow like an artificial scab, and splinting broken bones. In emergencies, with enough energy in materials, the suit can completely rebuild its wearer with different biochemistry. If this is done, as long as the brain is protected the body can be regrown. However, it often alters personality (due to different neurotransmitters and such) and is irreversible.

I found the thing. It’s up there.

“Lots of ways. We could get carbon dioxide from the air and combine it with water, we could take coal and water, we could take it from anything alive, or anything edible.” I assume they were walking to the river Merryn mentioned. When they reach it, Nick dips his foot into the water and xenosuit roots begin to grow out from it. “I need water for a couple reasons.”

“So I just… put it on my helmet and put water on it?”

Nick nods. “It’s essentially a glorified plant; you need to water it for it to grow. If you want it to go faster you can add anything that might have carbon. I’d put it somewhere you don’t have protection already; you can tell SIMON how you want it to grow.”

“Biomatter works as well, right?”

Tenth placed it onto back, first slitting his skin with a knife and pouring it onto the patch. “I wish for it to grow to protect my back.”

Nick cocks his head. “Why would you use blood? There’s plenty of plants around here.” He pulls a limb off a nearby tree and crumples it, then hands it to Tenth.

I thought they’d walked to a river. Maybe they’re still on their way.

“Yes it does, but so does water. If you’re fine with the suit fully interfacing with you, though, it can share water and nutrients on its own, even with the little bit you have there. Even a little extra oxygen in your blood goes a long way.”

Tenth shrugged, then jumped in the river that was most definitely there the entire time.

Nick stands in up to his ankles, roots growing out from the xenosuit. “Here, connect one of these - I can gather nutrients with my whole suit. I assume you want my standard protective layers: life support, insulation, shock absorption, shock distribution, anti tear, fireproofing, anti tear again, exterior functions?”

Tenth nodded in the shallow water. He connected it.

Roots reach out from Nicks suit into the water and nearby trees and shrubs. Slowly but surely, Tenth’s suit grows outwards, linking around his shoulders, and beginning to cover his arms and legs. It’s comfortable, keeping the skin it covers at perfect conditions, and rather light. Nick’s suit stockpiles water, but doesn’t grow yet; there isn’t anything to make.

Tenth thanks him, and teleports out of the water.

Uh...

Here we go...

Screams of shock sound from the city as an explosive goes off, shattering glass from one of the taller buildings, one some thirty or forty stories. It was exploded midway up the building, and was clearly a big enough explosion to level a small home.

Pieces of concrete tumble to the ground.

That's... HIS building. Well, it used to be. This is... reckless. He's using this explosion, that he most likely set, to call the police here. The police will most likely establish a large perimeter around his building, and the area will probably cover the current building he uses and headquarters.

Damn.

He must have a LOT of cash, to be able to pull something like that. Jathenyr take the man, he's far to good at playing the economy.

Nick looks up at the building, shocked. “I hope nobody was in there when that happened… the man’s a monster.” His suit draws nutrients back out of the roots, shriveling them, and he checks over his equipment. “This will damage our chances at any sort of media campaign, unless we find evidence Ardaklin is behind it. Tenth, Glinte? You two up for getting us past that barricade?”

They are good people, or at least, they try to be.

“Of course I won’t. I was planning to just go around them.” SIMON tries to determine what would happen if Nick reported Ardaklin for interdimensional kidnapping.
