Corin’s grin widens as he notes down the final bet. Mare and Tinker begin moving towards the arena. “Ready to fight?”

Gavin twists away. “Don’t touch me,” he growls.

Lily’s screams echoed in her ears. She shouldn’t have volunteered. She shouldn’t have trusted Èmeric with her family.

“It doesn’t matter, does it.”

“What doesn’t matter?” Corin murmured.

“Whether or not we’re ready or willing to fight.”

Corin’s grin seemed to settle. “No. But it’s polite to ask.” Don’t toy with them. With us.

“Don’t pretend you care,” she muttered.

I do. “Of course I don’t.” Then prove it. “Fight, tribute.”

She stepped off of hers with a heaviness and unsheathed her knife. The Redspine’s blood still coated it. She looked up at Tinker, face red and eyes pooling.

It’s between me, him, and Lily… And I have to choose which of us it will be.

“They’re hurting Lily,” she said so only Tinker could hear.

He turns around and hisses through his teeth, now in the hallway with his son.

"You..." He takes a deep breath. "I'm trying to help you, okay?"

“I don’t need your help,” Gavin said. “I never have.” You’ve been…useful in getting me where I am. A stepping stone is all you’ll ever be.

"I'm your father." He looks at him, his heart breaking slightly but he won't show it. "Même si je te mets la pression pour que tu sois meilleur, je me soucie de toi. Tu es mon fils et je suis ton père. Rien ne changera cela." He speaks softly.

Gavin gritted his teeth, speaking softly and firmly. “J'essaie de rendre le monde meilleur. Votre faiblesse nous retient tous.“

He puts his hand on his shoulder and legs out a breath. “You are my son. It is not weak to love such a son as you. The reason I push you to excellence is because I love you.”

“You don’t understand,” Gavin growled, pushing his hand away. “None of you understand. You don’t know what it is out there. You’ve never lived on the streets. You don’t know. So stop pretending to be so wise. You know nothing of human beings.”

He looks shocked for a moment before cutting off his last word. "I'm just trying to be a good father!"

He goes silent a moment. "Do I know what its like to be on the streets? No... but do you know what its like to be a father? No. So don't lecture me like you are oh so wise either."

“Petty,” Gavin mutters. “Petty, petty, petty! All of you, so absorbed in shallow things like family. You can’t fool me. I’ve known real men and women. That’s what I’m making here. Trying is right. All you ever do is try. Until you learn to succeed, you can s-stay away from me.” He stomped off. “I don’t need a father.”

Tinker squeezed his eyes shut against the cries.

"I know."

I know.

He opened his eyes and regretted it.

The sight of Marewill, eyes red and brimming with tears, holding a bloody knife...the pain, the despair...

She's... she's actually going to do it, isn't she?

Something in him broke.

Snapped.

...

Tinker became aware of the faintest lick of power, in his core. In desperation, he reached out to it.

A sensation burst through him. The air briefly flickered around him, giving him the sensation as if he'd been suddenly jolted, although he hadn't moved an inch. A strange sense of deja vu overcame him and faded in a split second. A web of blue lines pointing from his chest flickered into and out of his vision. A burst of strength ran through his veins, then left just as quickly, leaving him almost fatigued.

But at the forefront of his attention was the split-second enhancement to his physical senses. A flash of brightness, an overwhelming scent of sweat and fear, the coolness of the arena suddenly becoming freezing.

And the screams of a young girl suddenly piercing, deafening.

Loud enough to hear the unnatural, mechanical static of a speaker laced in the voice.

...

The burst of power faded as instantly as it had come. Tinker barely had time to process what had happened. But his head snapped up. He lunged at Marewill and grabbed her wrists, holding them steady.

"Mare," he said urgently. "That's a speaker. They don't actually have her. Burn tin; listen. Trust me."

The knife clattered to the floor. She tried to break out of his grip, but he was stronger than her. “Where do you think they got that sound?” she asked, barely audible.

"Think, Mare. They have the means to replicate voice, don't they? She's with them. They can overlay her voice pattern onto whatever they want. Would they really risk the chance of the fact that they tortured a young child getting out into the world? Their public image is bad enough."

Even as he spoke, though, his own doubts grew. Maybe they would...maybe they are that deranged and sadistic.

His hands shook. Please believe me. I don't want you to have to kill me. You can hate me later if I'm wrong...

He’s wrong, heswrongheswrongheswrong.

…Right?

Tinker was always talking about retaining humanity. He’d saved her life several times. He wouldn’t lie to deceive her.

She burned her tin. She heard the slight crackle of the speaker. Sure enough, there were inconsistencies with the way the crying sounded.

Every muscle in her body relaxed and she fell into Tinker’s chest.
