I thought about that, but if it's intent based why don't they react to the intent until after the blood is spilled? Also, would they react to killing then if there is no blood drawn? Let's say you strangle someone?

Red accidentally slit William Ann’s neck and that triggered them too. It seems that just blood in the air spilled by others triggers them. Even after William Ann’s got slit, Shades were still triggered by her blood: Quote Red spat to the side. Then a padded crossbow bolt shot from the night and took him in the shoulder, jolting him. His blade slid across William Ann’s neck, and a dribble of blood ran down it. The girl’s eyes widened in horror, though it was little more than a nick. The danger to her throat wasn’t important. The blood was. Red tumbled back, gasping, hand to his shoulder. A few drops of blood glistened on his knife. The shades in the Forests around them went black. Glowing green eyes burst alight, then deepened to crimson. Red eyes in the night. Blood in the air. [...] Silence’s tears felt cold on her face as she ran, wind blowing her. [...] Near her, other shades stopped, eyes deepening to red. Blood in the air. Eyes of crimson. [...] Branches lashed at her as she pushed forward. Was that light ahead? The waystop? Perhaps they read Connection, and when blood is drawn by another person, even if an accident, it forms a Connection that remembers that act. Edited March 6, 2024 by Trusk'our
