Trusk'our he/him Posted November 7, 2023 Posted November 7, 2023 It was stated in a WoB that a Cognitive Shadow like Kelsier could theoretically Bond someone on Roshar, and we have another WoB that says a Seon Bond taken to Roshar could allow the person Bonded to them to gain powers, albeit different ones from what Surgebinding normally grants; Spoiler OdysseyCon 2016 - Arcanum (coppermind.net) Blightsong Could Kelsier theoretically bond with someone on Roshar? Brandon Sanderson Yes. Spoiler https://wob.coppermind.net/events/161/#e6928 Questioner If an Elantrian bonded to a Seon were to travel to Roshar, would that act as a Nahel bond? Brandon Sanderson It would act very, very similarly, yes. But it would be like... it wouldn't necessarily do the exact same things. Like if you've got two radios tuned to a frequency, they won't necessarily pick up another radio frequency, or things like this. I don't know, that's a bad metaphor, I'd have to think of a better one. But it would be treated exactly the same way but it might not grant the same powers. Basically, this got me thinking that a Returned could potentially form a Bond with a human and grant them powers, though the powers manifested would not be the same as those found in traditional Surgebinding. It would be almost like a mini-god granting a blessing to their mortal follower or champion .

Nahel Bond will bring them closer to PR in return. Returned and Heralds already are in PR, they have a body there. The questions about it are usually the other way around - can Returned bond a spren: Spoiler Argent Can a Returned like Lightsong go to Roshar and form a bond with a spren? Brandon Sanderson Investiture interferes with other Investiture. Argent And they have a lot of it. Brandon Sanderson And they have a lot of it. That is not-- It's not completely-- For instance you can Push on Invested metal, but it's hard. There's a resistance, the more Invested the harder-- So a bond for instance-- forming a bond-- It's, yeah-- It can be done-- I mean Sazed took two of the powers up, right? But I kind of imagine what he did as a nuclear reaction. Where breaking an atom is hard, unless you are in the middle of a sun. And he was in the middle of the sun. At that point-- Argent There was a lot of stuff going on around him that facilitated. Brandon Sanderson Yes, definitely. But when you've got that much power you'll-- In other words if there is a lot of power going around, these things become easier. Argent So, possible but difficult is-- Brandon Sanderson Yes. Firefight Chicago signing (Feb. 20, 2015) Spoiler Questioner Can a Returned gain a Nahel bond? Brandon Sanderson It is not outside the realm of possibility. Much more easy than Nightblood [gaining a Nahel bond]. Invested things resist other Investiture and so it depends on amounts of Investiture and it depends on a lot of factors. But that one's a mixing that could happen. Bands of Mourning release party (Jan. 25, 2016) Edited November 7, 2023 by alder24 1
Sophrosyne He/any Posted November 8, 2023 Posted November 8, 2023 (edited) Tress spoilers? VERY minor if so. Spoiler Bonds seem to be a mortal? for like of a better word, something in exchange for and invested art. So take the luhal bond, you as a human trade the spore water to have control over its shape. and in the case of the nahel bond you trade... Ideals? Emotions? cognitive energy? Whatever it is you trade it for a access to Surges the common thing here is that it needs to be a trade with a greater being, one made of fragments of god in the case of spren and in the case of aethers... weeell I don't know (maybe I will after I read Aether of Night?) but It's been implied that the aethers are big players in the cosmere, if not on the scale of shards. So, in that sense a returned being a cognitive shadow like Kel AND a slinter of a shard, I don't see why not. Though question The WoB about Kel bonding. Are we sure Brandon meant Kel could bond with a human as if he were a spren and not Kel could become a Knight Radiant like his fellow Cognitive shadows the Heralds? and for that matter what's stopping a Hareld bonding a person? and another one to arcanist more well-read than me why would a returned being of the PR change things? I figured sense aviar can do it, it wouldn't be an issue. Edited November 8, 2023 by Sophrosyne Spoiler tag!
