"I would say by going during the day, but then we would be seen, and they would be being actively put to work."

Maybe? I don't know how to play a bunch of skaa and stuff and how any of this can work...

"I really should have read the books...fine, then, what do you want to do?"

"Rainbow stairs. Explain."

Hmm...we could get attacked by something, or just wait for Hope to come back (not sure when that'll be)

"That's just...the easiest way of finding your way around. The clinic is a big place, and we aren't the sort of place to just...say staircase 5a, you know? We're just a little unconventional. It's not a bad thing!" Tal grinned. "Unless you're colorblind...are you?"

Why would I be... "No? But aren't 1 in 10 men colorblind so your staircase classification system only works 90% of the time?"

"We have some pretty powerful healers," Tal said. "But...mostly, it's just to make the place feel quirky. We call it a clinic, but we don't want people to feel like they're living in a hospital or something. For a lot of these people, it's home."

Just then, a tall man strode towards them. "You!" He barked. Rue froze.

"Healing doesn't heal colorblindness." She shook her head. "But I don't see why everything need to be so... Quirky. It's kind of creepy, like a mix between a seniors home and an elementary school."

Hmm...are they dressed more like skaa or nobility?

"Ouch," Tal said, pretending to be offended. He was, a little, but...this was his job. This was something he could do. "If it's not to your liking, there's a medieval wing you could stay in..."

Probably skaa, since they aren't really wearing fancy clothing

Though notably, they aren't really dirty at all from work and ash.

TAAron nodded slowly.

Rue was quiet for a moment. "You really don't think they'd just...go, if given the chance to leave with no consequences?"

Tal shrugged. "The clinic is...a rather unique sort of place."

Tal grinned. "Good, isn't it?"

Noted.

The man snorted. “Idiot skaa. Tell me, who’s your master?”

Rue was giving him a cold look, really a regular look for her, and it was making him visibly angrier.

“Ah…it’s okay to get attached,” Tal said, smiling softly and forcing down memories that tried to rise up and remind him of someone he’d once been. “It can hurt to lose it, but the joy of loving something is always worth it.”

He looked surprised, then nodded sharply. “Good, then. Since you aren’t doing much else, lazy skaa that you are, attend me. And get your girl under control.” He turned and started walking. Rue glared at his back, muttering under her breath.

TAAron also seemed very bothered, which was unusual for him. "Should we follow?"

“I think,” Rue said darkly, “that sorry excuse for a man needs to have an…accident.”

The man turned, frowning. “Well? Hurry up, now! I’ve always said my father should be harsher with his skaa…” he raised a dueling cane threateningly.

Rue raised an eyebrow, but before she could answer the man hit TAAron with his dueling cane. “Move, skaa.”
