"Rue." TAAron grabbed her shoulder, shaking her slightly.

Rue gasped, her eyes suddenly clear. She pulled away from him. “Don’t touch me…” He was just trying to help, idiot! Light knows you need it…

"Sorry. You just seemed like you were... disconnecting. Sort of like I was when I had died and been brought back."

“I’m here,” Rue said sharply. “And…for better or worse, I’m alive.”

"I'd say for better." He smiled softly.

“We’ll see,” Rue said. “For now let’s…let’s help them.”

“You don’t know that,” Rue whispered, softer. “And you don’t know what I’ll become. No one does.”

Tal lead them to a large room. There were a few people scattered about, and at one end was a huge sign that said “CHOUTA”

"I don't need food."

"Okay."

Rue nodded. "Right, then." She paused. "I suppose...we should start with the ones who are suffering the most. Where can we find those?"

"You don't need a lot of things," Tal said sarcastically. "Like joy. Just...eat some chouta. It's nice."

"I'm not really sure. It's hard to quantify suffering. There are those outside of Luthadel that are put to work in fields and such."

"Then...we'll start where we can. Where will there be the least...security, I suppose?"

Tal frowned. "That's too bad...what about intangible food?" He points at another large sign, which reads "ESSENCE OF CHOUTA"

"I don't consume nutrients, because it's a waste of time." Melody rolled her eyes, "Does that make more sense?"

"Well, when the mists come in at night, the skaa are left alone and hidden in their camps."

Tal sighed. "And what would you like to be doing with this time, right now?"

"Discovering what the heck is wrong with this place."

"I really should have read the books...fine, then, what do you want to do?"

"I didn't say we can't try, but it might be very difficult. It took a martyr to rally behind. We do have an easier way to get them out, but still..."

Rue was quiet for a moment. "You really don't think they'd just...go, if given the chance to leave with no consequences?"

Tal shrugged. "The clinic is...a rather unique sort of place."
