+Oltux72 he/him Posted October 2, 2023 Posted October 2, 2023 Let's assemble the known facts Nomad has been on tens of planets each of his skips uses up vast amounts of Investiture the Night Brigade caught him within days What does that imply: the majority of the inhabitated worlds in the Cosmere have no Shards in residence (simple math) it is possible to gather a lot of Investiture quickly on worlds without Shards Now the obvious question: Where did that Investiture come from? It seems to me that the close association between magic systems and Shards just does not exist.
therunner he/him Posted October 2, 2023 Posted October 2, 2023 He could have find installations like the Scadrian one with Dor jars, or other planets colonies. He also could have filled himself up more on some of the easier planets, like Sel, and get enough for several jumps. The fact that he is not at zero after arrival on Canticle implies that either some Skips use less energy than 100% (in which case 100% is just threshold beyond which he can manipulate his Connection to that level), or that he had more than 100%. Or usually it takes longer for Night Brigade to find him, he did seem surprised they caught up so fast. Perhaps Canticle was relatively close to his previous location. 1

It seems to me that the close association between magic systems and Shards just does not exist. Well, the presence of a Shard influences the expression of the magic - mostly on how it is acquired/performed. But Investiture is a Cosmere property, dating back to before the Shattering. So the availability of Investiture on non-Shardic worlds should not be surprising. For example, Roshar had Investiture-laden highstorms even before the Shattering - but, both the arrival of Honor / Cultivation / Odium to Roshar, and the subsequent Splintering of Honor, had an effect on the nature of highstorms. And just because there is no Shard on Canticle (no singularity in Shadesmar) now does not mean there never was one. Just that we never learn of what that former Shardic presence might have been, or how it left. 2
+Harrycrapper Posted October 4, 2023 Posted October 4, 2023 I seemed to recall a WoB from the Q&A Brandon did shortly after revealing this project, I think it clears this up: Quote Questioner Are there planets in the Cosmere in which there is no Investiture, and could Sig accidentally skip there and get permanently stuck? Brandon Sanderson There are no planets with no Investiture. You would have to have no matter in order for there to be no Investiture, because matter, energy, and Investiture are the same thing. There are planets where, let's just say, natural sources of Investiture that are easy to reach are not present. So you would have to figure out another way to make this all work, which would be very difficult. It is possible for him to get there, but the way the magic is working is he is being drawn partially to sources of Investiture, so it's highly unlikely he would end up on one of those planets. +Oltux72 he/him Posted October 5, 2023 Author Posted October 5, 2023 That actually makes the case for a larger Cosmere. He has been to tens of planets with a lot of Investiture. There cannot be tens of Shardworlds.
NameIess Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 (edited) I’ve figured that the Cosmere was huge ever since Tress. This is just confirmation that there’s a ton of non-Shard worlds. Edited October 5, 2023 by Nameless* 1

This is just confirmation that there’s a ton of non-Shard worlds. Especially when they were talking about "tons of planets have backwards monarchies, you want us to help them all?", which implies that there are way more than what we have seen. As it is implied they are not talking about Roshar as they know Sig is Rosharan, we know it isn't Scadrial or First of the Sun or any others. Definitely not Komashi, I don't even think Komashi has an organized government, might be locally ruled cities, or even a communal rule, they don't really touch on it. Maybe Nalthis, but it is implied they advanced beyond that, I feel. All we know is Lumar, and one or two isn't a lot, not near as much as what they imply. So, yeah, it is implied a ton of planets exist.
