RIP "These Crazy Titles"

I wanted to take this oppertunity to acknowledge the loss of one of the better ways to kill time on TWG. Aside from gross speculation on what every detail means in any of the series Brandon is working on at any given time, we sometimes needed a thread to generally have fun with eachother. "These Crazy Titles" was that thread. There were so many amusing situations we came up with during that threads time. I remember battles and randomly occuring hilarity. Anyone who found themselves on this thread at anytime knows what it is that we lost when the TWG and random title generator died.

Rest in peace "These Crazy Titles"

Its good to be here Eerongal. You can imagine my displeasure when I clicked on my link to TWG and found the hacked message. As much as I missed talking about the mistborn trilogy as it was written, I found that I missed messing around on this thread with all of you just as much. There were so many good times on that thread. There was a battle for a while when it was either Chaos or myself as mercenaries with followers just talking crap as we leveled and our titles changed. Just good clean imaginative fun for no other reason than just to have fun. There were a lot of other people who were staples on that thread and hopefully they find their way over here if they havent already.

This site is impressive in comparison to the old one. Im pleased with the look and general layout and the old friends. It may be unrealistic to have another random title generator added to everything else that is going on with this site. I realize that there is probably a lot more work involved with this site and adding more to the plate would be asking a lot.

Ryan- With everything I just said taken into consideration. I am not saying that I wouldnt love to see the titles, because trust me I would. Im just saying that as much as I would love it, Its understandable if it doesnt happen.

Chaos- Be aware that if this were ever to happen. . . I would be coming for you.

Those responsible for stalking the stalked have been stalked?

My only concern with adding the custom title system here is that it was likely part of the reason why TWG wasn't kept up to date (because of all the custom code), and therefore got hacked into. Though i could see it being possible to keep it all entirely self contained, so that upgrades aren't too much of an issue, but its certainly something to keep in mind when we consider custom coded bits to add in.

SMF's extension mechanism is not conducive to clean upgrades. Rather than using plugins, they use patches. SMF mods actually modify the core code; they aren't segregated at all. Its package manager automates the process of patching (and unpatching) the code, but it still means that any update to the core distribution could cause you to have to make significant changes to your mods.

What's more, I'd bet money that they didn't bother patching their mods through the package manager. They weren't going to distribute them, so why spend the effort? Instead, I bet they just changed the code.

Applying upgrades to an open-source web app that you've customized is not fun. You have to merge the new code into your installation, updating your customizations as you go. But which changes were made by you, and which are part of the update? Best case, the old version you customized is still available for download, so you can compare a clean install with yours and identify the files that need to be merged. Worst case, you need to carefully compare each and every file, identify your customizations in the diffs, and merge them.

Like I said, it's not fun, and it takes a lot of time. Last time I upgraded a heavily-customized web app, it took me about 20 hours. If I had it to do over, I'd have factored my changes into separate files at the least. Ah well.

Anyway, none of this is an issue with software that has been built with a proper extension mechanism. I'm operating on the assumption that IPB supports plugins. Yes, you may need to update the plugin when applying major version upgrades, but point releases (like the security updates that could have prevented the TWG breakin) rarely require it. And when updates are required, they're usually minor.

All that is to say, I'm not too concerned about it. :)

well, i've never done any modifications of forums software (for either IPB or SMF) so i can't speak for how it works, all my programming experience is scripting and application programming, so anything I say in regards to web programming is based on limited experience, but the way I see it, so long as any modifications to the main code base is nothing more than references to outside, modular code to get it up and running, it shouldn't be a huge issue.

Out of curiosity, is there any title above "Shard"? You've been a Shard for a rather long time, and I've wondered if it might still upgrade (at 200 or 250 reputation or some such).

At the current moment, there are not any other ranks. But now that you mention it, I should give myself some fancy titles! It is, after all, the will of the members :P

All kidding aside, I do need to rework it to give more ranks. I didn't expect people to get so high so fast.

As for the modifications, there IS a nice, modular system for IPB 3, where the mods are called "hooks". I haven't looked at any of the (scant) documentation about them, really, but they work pretty nice. I don't know the extent of what they can do, but this *could* work.

That said, I feel this is an incredibly low priority thing, especially since IPB coding can get weird. Though, if it can get working, this could be pretty cool.

Given that there was a Hoid-in-training level, perhaps there could be some level that was "World-hopper" or something. Or perhaps "King's Wit." Perhaps set the highest level as "Adonalsium" (But have it at a reputation of 1000 or 1024, so people would rarely reach it, if ever). Although it would be kind of funny if there highest level were something like "Beggar/Informant/Storyteller/Wit."

then nobody would ever ever see the clever titles you thought up for the higher ranks!

but just think how fun it will be to get to the highest rank! We can put it at the 16th rank! Think of the bragging rights! You would only need 18,446,744,079,709,551,616 rep points! I'm sure chaos will be there in like...what...a week? :P

I'm more inclined toward the idea of having them be powers of 2, perhaps starting at 16. So 0-15 is one level (or perhaps 0-7 and 8-15 are two), 16-31 is the next, 32-63 is the next, etc. It would make leveling up slower, but would have a sort of elegance. Also, could there be a rank for any reputation below 0, like Skaze or Voidbringer or something? It wouldn't happen often, but might be kind of entertaining.

how about "Dungspren"?

I like it.

I never thought I'd say this, but I do miss the asinine titles. I liked being a (insert adjective) gravedigger but the "powers of 16" sounds even better. There definitely needs to be an insanely high reputation requirement for the highest level just for Chaos. We wouldn't want him to get bored, after all.

ha HA! I'm not the only one who thinks so! Now we can form a coalition, and protest! It's not fair that the 99% get to veto our position! We are the 1%! Occupy 17th Shard! Row row, fight the powah!

There are indeed rankings for negative reputation.

EDIT: I'm the 1%, apparently? Others aren't that far below me with reputation.

Now, if you said that 10% of the posts on the forums were in 1% of the forums...
