Wrim
Hello, I'm Wrim. I'm a professional singer with a lot of free time. Between gigs I travel a lot, and I've begun to pick up writing to pass the time. I began listening to Writing Excuses about a week ago and I just finished the first Season. I'm currently working on a CyberPunk Novel about System Icons who search for the function of existence/meaning of life. Since I'm Swedish and English isn't my native language, my biggest problem with writing (besides grammar and sentence-structure) is my mixture of American English and British English words. I hope to learn a lot from you guys. I've never read a Brandon Sanderson book, but I was drawn to the community due to it's creative discussions. If I were to read Brandon's work, what should I begin with? A great inspirational help when it comes to writing is the tapping sounds of a Mechanical Keyboard. It almost sounds like a typewriter! Check out the QPad MK-80 if you're interested. I'm sorry for any grammatical mistakes. I hope to get constructive feedback. Joe ST he/him
Hey there Wrim, great to have you here. I'd go with either Mistborn (The Final Empire) or The Way of Kings to start, though you can get Warbreaker for free off his website if you want. I dont know how much help we will be with regards your American/British English qualms, since we're all also quite questionable about that (though all the Americans will obviously stick with American lol) Joe
Wrim
Thanks for the advice, I'm reading Warbreaker right now! I guess I'll just have to decide what language to write in. Maybe American English should be more fitting for this forum. I'll try my best to think about my hyphenated compounds and aluminum/aluminium, but don't hesitate to correct me if I mess up! Chaos he/him
Hey Wrim! I think you might just be our first member who joined before reading some of Brandon's stuff. That's very cool you were attracted here anyways! I'm excited. Have you looked into Reading Excuses, by chance? My usual standby when introducing people to Brandon (depending on how much fantasy background they have) is Warbreaker, but I see you didn't need much convincing there I don't think it matters too much whether you use American or British English, though when in doubt, American English is a safe bet. Some people may be thrown off with "aluminium" and "honour". But for the most part, our members are astute and intelligent. They aren't going to get in a fit over something like that. Though, if you edit the Coppermind Wiki, it becomes more important to consistently use American English. As for your English, it's very good! The only grammar thing I noticed was some peculiar capitalization, like "Season", "System Icons", and "Mechanical Keyboard". I honestly wasn't too perturbed by them, but I just mention it because you asked
Wrim
Thank you for the feedback, I'm already improving! As for RE (see? I'm learning abbreviations!), I'm gathering the courage to join the mailing list, but I think I need to practice my productivity a bit first so I'll manage to finish before the deadlines. CrazyRioter she/her
Can't help you with the American/British thing, as I'm Canadian and we use a mix of both, but nobody here is going to get too worked up about it. hope you enjoy Warbreaker, and the rest of Brandon's books if you decide to read them. Makes sense. Though, to play devil's advocate, this might give you motivation to produce more (Plus, when you're on the email list, it's totally up to you which weeks you submit. There's no harm.) Tritlo he/him
Hey, nice to have you here! I'm from Iceland, so I deal with the same problem myself. I usually choose the words that I think look better, like honour, colour and harbour, but then again I prefer civilization and customization. I guess I'll have to choose one v.s the other if I publish something though. My first Brandon book was The Gathering Storm, which is the 12th Wheel of Time book, but if you aren't into that series, I'd go for The Way of Kings or Mistborn. I haven't read Warbreaker myself (It's next on my "To read" list, I swear!), but those two are my favorites.
Kelek he/him
Warbreater is a great way to "break the ice" (pun intended) into the Cosmere!
Djerf he/him
Wellcome Wrim! For spelling, don't look my way, I'm Swedish to and I've got dyslexia. Since you got here with a wish to write I'd suggest reading Brandons work he wrote before way of kings. He annoted those ( he wrote his thougths on every chapter) you can find it on his site, and warbreaker still got ( I think ) several diffrent drafts.
