Has Brandon ever said how boxings convert to U.S dollars? We do know one clip is 8 boxings. Due to the whole 16 thing on Scadrial, a boxing coul be $1.60 U.S dollars. This makes clips 20 cents.

No, however he has values for it, but we just don't know them.

Questioner

I asked this of Pat. Money system wise, a standard, like, equivalent to U.S. dollars kind of thing. Is a clear mark? I usually think of a clear mark as a dollar.

Brandon Sanderson

If you email through my website, Peter keeps all of this. I actually, these days, just write "worth about this much" in dollars and he figures out a monetary for it, because this just takes, y'know, I have to reach into the wiki and be like "Alright, how much is this worth again? How much is this?" The commodities are of different values an so he just factors it all out. I remember giving him instructions once, that sounds about right.

Questioner

I figured as much, for slaves to...

We're like, what does a slave make... it's, yeah.

It could probably be figured out by looking at prices in the broadsheet ads and comparing to ~1910 US prices for similar things.

Possibly, or with apples, SoS ch 6:

Quote

“Five notes, for one basket of apples! That’s robbery!”
Marasi hesitated on the street. She’d driven the motorcar up to the Hub for the governor’s speech, then parked it with the coachmen who took pay to watch and refuel motors, intending to walk the rest of the way on foot. The Hub could be a busy place.
That led her here, near this small street market with people selling fruit. With disbelief, she saw that one vendor was—indeed—selling apples at five notes a basket. Those shouldn’t cost more than half a boxing per basket, at most. She’d seen them for a handful of clips.

But we don't even know how much boxings are in a note. There are 100 clips in a boxing however. So if someone knows the price of apples in 1910 then you can figure it out :P

Why are we using 1910 prices? Couldn't we just figure out what a boxing would be worth in dollars today?

I don't actually use American dollars but I'm still interested. How many apples would be in a basket? Less than a bushel, but probably still a lot, depending on the size of basket. It would be fun if it were 16, but I don't know.

Ok, I'm up to the challenge.

On average, an apple weighs between 150 g and 250 g, 200 g is in the middle. That's 5 apples per 1 kg.

The price of 1 kg (2 lb.) of apples in Los Angeles, California is $4.80.

If a basket contains 1 kg of apples, then in pre SoS price  around 5$ would be worth 0.5 boxing (50 clips). 3 kg in a basket - 15$ is 0.5 boxing etc. Which I think is too much.

But math would make a price per 1kg of apple very nice - 1 apple is worth 1$ - 10 clips - so here you go.

Interestingly I've found some document from 1910 which specifies a price for 12 apples as 5$ but I'm not sure if I'm reading it correctly - https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/184058#page/3/mode/1up

In that case 1 apple is worth 4 clips and that's ~0.42$.

Not really, as relative prices change over time. Electroncs are getting cheaper while food does not in our time for example.

That is from a nursery. Those prices are for the apple tree.

The Elendel basin is extremely fertile. That means that if you use only agricultural goods as opposed to industrial goods, you'll get defalted values.
