The thing about that is there are two people on the team who aren't easily contained, one of which could seriously mess with or completely incapacitate the guards. So if we wanted it to be more of a challenge, Variance might have to get somewhat incapacitated, maybe?

I doubt that. Variance can only really be killed in one way, and that's surprising him with something that somehow drains Perception. I don't think they could do that, let alone fast enough to stop him from getting away.

Unless you have a different idea of how they'd do that, that makes sense given what Variance is.

I'm not entirely sure myself yet. Beorin's worldbuilding is constantly a work in progress, with the Magic System as the most ambiguous so far.
