Moments later, Variance appeared in Allera's ship. "Hello, newcomer." He eyed the ball of light warily.

“Hello!” The ball of light pulsed cheerfully. “Good to meet you Variance. I must say, you are quite intriguing. Your powers are like nothing I’ve ever seen. Which is impressive, considering how long I’ve been alive.”

"How long have you been alive?" Variance asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Calm down."

Shim flickered to red for a moment. “No, he can’t.”

“A few thousand years. Maybe 8,000 or so? I haven’t kept track.”

"Well, that explains it. Rumors die after millions of years, I would guess." Variance fixated on Shim. "What are you, exactly?"

"Hm. Sounds like someone's lying, eh?"

"To explain it in precise terms, My body is made of pure light. I still have a soul of course, but I cannot use it to affect the physical world as my body is incapable of channeling it properly, not to mention the numerous other restraints preventing me from wielding magic as I used to."

"Ah. That makes us almost similar, and yet very different. You are the way that you are because of a magical curse, right? I am not."

"Yes, I was intentionally sealed."

"What are your senses like? Mostly the same as how they were?"

"Not exactly. I can see things in every direction, as well as all wavelengths of light. My ability to discern magic is much more limited than it used to be."

"How does this look to you?" Suddenly, Shim's light split into fragments of color, casting vibrant shapes of varying shades onto the walls of the ship.

My guess is that it would look something like a kaleidoscope to him. Not just different colors but a distorted, fragmented image.

"Colorful. I assume this is your perception magic at work?"

"Yes. You know, it's interesting. My magic doesn't change anything about the real, physical world. Your light is really just as it was. But clearly, I can still have an effect on you. I'd guessed, of course, because you can see me, but there's my confirmation."

"It is rather unsettling, but yes. It seems your magic can affect me."

Variance chuckled, and then Shim's vision went dark. "Did that work?"

Shim's light dimmed substantially, shifting to a light blue. "Yes, it did."

Does he have a bunch of colors that emotions correspond to?

His vision returned. "Alright then. Any questions for me?"

Probably. Haven't quite figured them all out yet, but I think bluish is going to be fear.

"Can your powers kill people?"

The ship finally landed in the Beorin cruiser, but Ayia had directed the inspections to delay so they could occur under her own command. Now all she needed was a really good excuse to leave the transmissions room.

"Be right back," she said, and left.

"Not directly, I don't think." He paused. "Well, I can handle objects such as weapons with enough effort. So I guess that could count. That all?"

"For now. Perhaps I'll ask more questions once you're in a place that is more safe."
