“Mage trickery!” Allera yelled. “Don’t fall for it!” They kept resisting the thing’s grip.

The grip finally gave out, leaving a bloody mark on the wing.

No. Not again.

That seemed like a no. "Stop struggling! Okay? Just trust me... stop struggling..."

“What?! Why?”

No. Not again.

Allera gasped. That felt… too easy.

The figure continued staring at her, but did not make any move to grab her again or anything else.

Please, please.

“They’ve got stones like mine. But more of them — and more complicated ones, too; they can control forces, create illusions, lots of different things.” Allera paused, catching their breath. “That… I’ve never seen anything like that, though. That hand, coming from out of nowhere…” They shuddered.

They turned towards the figure. “What… what are you?”

Ayia nodded - that would do for now. She then turned to the specter. "I can hear your thoughts. Can you hear my words?"

Yes.

The form was diminishing, breaking apart into the original floating artifacts, and the voice was getting harder to make out.

I am... sorry for startling you. This is difficult for me.

Ayia held up a hand to pause the bird lady. It felt a little weird trying to assert herself in a situation she knew nothing about and on a planet she'd never been to, but one way or another, antagonizing this specter seemed... unwise.

"No, that's okay. What do you need? Can we help you?"

If you allow me, I can go with you. I'll help with what I can. I just need to be freed from this place.

“And how do we know we can trust you?”

I am not sure what kind of proof you are demanding.

Allera couldn’t some up with a good response, so they folded their wings back and said nothing.

"It's your prison? Why are you imprisoned?"

I cannot-

The static amplified, and the voice was lost. The form grew more indistinct, and a few drops of blood splattered on the ground beneath it.

Wonderful. "Do you mind if I speak with my... ah... associate? Privately?"

It did not respond, but the form dispersed, and eventually the noise and floating dots were gone.

That was... probably a lot of money. "This thing isn't interested in cash. Think about it: it said this whole planet is its prison, right? In situations like these, generally that's because they're an exceptionally powerful being. So the question isn't what kind of game it's playing, but rather whether it's been imprisoned for a good reason or a bad one."

Or, they could be a Mage playing tricks on us!” Allera took an angry bite of dried meat.
