Happy Father's Day! Favorite Sanderson fictional Father? Least favorite?

Recommended Posts

I always loved the protective relationship between Vin and Sazed. Yes, Kell brought Vin out of her shell and taught her to trust, but. . I've always said;
Kell taught her to trust
Sazed gave her reason to.

He was always looking out for her.

I'm not sure who my favorite is just yet. My Least favorite is Iadon (Elantris). My 2nd least favorite is Lin Davar (Stormlight Archive).

Iadon worse than Lin Davar? :o

My worst is Lin Davar, and Straff Venture. and Teft's father. Both his parents, actually.

Best - Lirin, Sarene's father (forgot his name), Dalinar, and because of Melaan^^ I'm debating Kelsier or Sazed.

Lin, at least, tried to keep a secret to protect his offspring. I can't find a redeeming quality of Iadon. (maybe in the sequel?!)

How could I forget Straff Venture?! Ugh. What a scumbag.

I LOVE this. Can something be Super true? If so, this is it!

Clubs kind of became a father figure to Spook. He came across as a little emotionally ill-equipped, but I respect the effort.

I think I'd want Kiin for a dad. I respect a lot about Dalinar but we'd bump heads in a father-daughter dynamic.

I'm giving this way too much thought.  :P

In terms of actual parenting though, Lin scarred all his children, they were terrified of him, they all have their own messed up way of dealing with a messed up life, they saw him beat up half the household, yell, embarass them etc.. (Come to think of it, why aren't they all Surgebinders??). Iadon didn't get on with Raoden sure, but he still managed to raise a perfectly healthy, independant individual who was his own person enough to disagree with Iadon. The makes Lin Davar a worse parent any day, in my books, anyway. :)

I was thinking we could attribute some of Raoden's well being possibly to his biological mother, (which is a major assumption) as well as the idea that wealthy children are surrounded by staff who are influential but mostly attributed his character to his special relationship with Duke Roial. There is a moment in the book when Raoden thinks back to a time when his father seemed like a better man. We can give Iadon the tiniest bit of credit based on that commentary. But we don't know how the mother passed away (unless I've forgotten) or how long his dad had his special "hobby." *shudder*

When we think about Shallan, having Lin (of all people--yuck!) and of course, the *tiny* bit we know of her own mother... It's amazing she has managed so well thus far. I give a little credit to Lin to damage his own reputation and social standing in an attempt to keep things going at home after such an incident. That doesn't excuse his behavior by any means. In future books we may find that the ultimate reason for that protection may have had everything to do with his group affiliations over the well being of any family member.

One thing I like about Sanderson's awful characters: often their antics are based off some kind of misguided idea that they're doing something for the greater good.

For me, Lin and Iadon are almost neck and neck in the race for who is the most awful parent. I just gave Lin a teeny boost because we have evidence of him occasionally trying to give his daughter a slight comfort (creepy foreshadowing lullaby) and protection.  Shallan and Raoden could world hop and have some majorly emo chats about Dads, for sure. Neither of the won the parent lotto. ;-)

After Dadinar Dalinar, Lirin would be my favorite Sanderson dad.

Not only did he raise our favorite broody bridgeman, he says one my favorite quotes from TWoK: “Somebody has to start. Somebody has to step forward and do what is right, because it is right.”

Dalinar, definitely, he's got a nice balance of sterness/good fathery-ness mixed in with his flaws.

But I also second the Sazed to Vin. There was a special sweetness in how Sazed was to Vin, especially when you consider he wouldn't be able to have his own kids. :')

I would love having Sazed as my father. He's just such a kind and gentle man, and I feel we would have fun being scholarly together.

Worst dad, without a doubt Lin Davar. He's emotionally and physically abusive. All of his children are scarred in some way. Balat hurts animals. Wikim suffers from depression. Jushu drinks and gambles to try and distract himself. Shallan represses any and all memories of hurt and blacks out whenever the past is mentioned. Just the entire story of the Davar family is incredibly sad and made me cry.

Second Prize for crappiest dad ever goes to Straff Venture. Zane definitely got the raw end of the deal, but Elend was also emotionally abused by being told that he was an idiot, useless, incapable of being an heir, etc. I feel that if they could meet each other without one being forced to kill the other, they would be able to help each other. But Ruin kind of ruined that.

No kidding. Straff sucks. I mean seriously. Though I will say I LOVE how nervous he gets around Zane because he knows the guy really could kill him if he decided to.

I always thought Zane and Elend could indeed get along under other circumstances, but you're right. Ruin and Straff 'ruined' any chance of that happening.

Elend would make a good dad.

Yes, yes, totally agree. He was always an interesting bad dad because of how scared and paranoid of Zane he was. And Elend, yes! He would be great. Imagining him as a father never crossed my mind until now.
