Channelknight Fadran Posted September 10, 2022 Author Posted September 10, 2022 Quote ...I put it there? *one scrolling session later* Oh. Just a snippet. (I gave up on that draft. Very badly-paced) "I guess I'm your neighbor now. I'm Krĵen."

She gave a quick, mildly angry look at Domuy as she passed by. It was insulting, honestly. We were all adults here, and it’s not like separating it out like this would help anything anyways. All it did was- oh, whatever. Not like she could do anything about it, for now. She quickly found her way to the back of the dormitory, hoping that being farther from the entrance would make it less crowded back here, keeping the noise a little quieter. Picking a bunk at random she threw her stuff down onto its surface and sat down herself next to it, lifting the bag onto her lap as she began to unpack. While doing this she figured she’d get herself acquainted with her neighbors. “Hey! What’s your name?” she calls out to the girl nearest to her. Sêron looked up in surprise, she had thought no-one else would come back here for a while. She sighed inwardly. Maybe for once optimism was the right course. No one should know anything about here, and her looks weren't too unusual in this diverse group. She looked at the girl who had spoken. She was about an inch taller than she was, with a much more solid build than Sêron's wiry frame. "My name is Sêron Vântan, what's yours?"

Shining Silhouette he/him Posted September 10, 2022 Posted September 10, 2022 Quote I got about halfway through writing my opening character's reaction to the first speech, but I've had a busy week so I didn't have time to finish. Can I still finish, or are we way ahead of that point now?

Shining Silhouette he/him Posted September 11, 2022 Posted September 11, 2022 (edited) Quote Probation officer character: Spoiler Literally just has a name at this point. To be added to when I have time Name: Ára (Ay-er-ah) Occupation: Probation Officer Ṫíya sneered. Fresh recruits were the worst, and this group seemed especially deplorable. As they filed in to the training chamber, their anxiety was palpable. Their posture was firm and attentive, but their expressions displayed just how easily they'd break. Ṫíya watched in enthralled disgust as the cadet in front of her began gnawing on his nails. It was fascinating the way he poured himself into the act, chewing like it was his last meal. Maybe it would be. All the same to her. She shifted her gaze to the recruit to her right. He was scrawny and carried what seemed to be a glimmer of ignorant excitement in his azure eyes. Disgusting. His stance was sluggish, and he was lazily shifting his weight between his feet, completely unaware of his surroundings. I bet I could steal the shirt from off his back without him noticing, she thought with a sly chuckle. An aide directed them to salute. Ṫíya unwillingly obliged. What was the point of making them wait out here, anyway? All it did was waste the time of all involved. The Captain could hurry his sorry scarlet eyes up. If he was going to give his "we're all doomed unless you listen to me" speech, he might as well do it quickly. "There are, as of today, three hundred and seventy-seven cadets in this cavern!" He started. "If I had my way, every single one of you would be faiemen-fighting material by the end of this regimen, and we'd have an army unlike..." Ṫíya tuned him out. The woman on her left had an attractive jewel in her golden hair. That could be an enticing bribe for one of the guards later. Perhaps it could even save her from some of those training exercises the Captain kept rambling about. Time to do some acting. She coughed loudly into her fist until the cadet turned. Then, rather awkwardly, she slipped, falling in the woman's direction. It was a good stumble, one that lacked any sense of agility and coordination. Her body hit the recruit as her hand subtly reached into the yellow hair, grasping the ornament. The woman barely kept her feet on the floor. "What are you doing?!" she whispered with fury. "Listen to the captain!" Ṫíya slipped the gem into her pocket, one she'd sown herself. "I'm sorry!" she puffed. "I almost lost my breakfast! I can't handle this right now!" After the woman turned away, Ṫíya hid a grin. Job well done. "We will begin here. We will begin now. The future is always forever away, and looking toward it is pointless without any focus on the now. I am going to send you through hell and back a million times over..." Was the Captain seriously still going? That was obnoxious. She scanned the room, looking for another target. Her eyes landed on Ára, who was staring daggers at her. When had he come into the room? She internally kicked herself, that was a rare observation slip for her. Well, he'd probably seen her elegant hiatus from the facility's floor. And he definitely suspected she'd taken something. Good thing she had another stache of goods hidden in her room. She innocently smiled at him. He scowled in return, wagging a finger from side to side. She'd have to deal with him later. "Understand, young weaklings," the Captain finally concluded. "We are going to shatter you. And then you are going to shatter them." Finally, he was done. That old red-eyed geezer could ramble on for ages. Edited September 11, 2022 by Shining Silhouette
Channelknight Fadran Posted September 11, 2022 Author Posted September 11, 2022 Quote First of all: some of those paragraphs were dang good prose. You get a Fadran Seal of Approval. Spend it wisely. Second of all: insert currency? I will now redeem your Fadran Seal of Approval for necessary input into the worldbuilding. Currency is digital, kept in a series of networks accessed via "Wristbanks," which are like smartphones but hologram watches. They work to send and receive messages, keep track of the news, and access other various internet-esque features. Currently it's a very privatized system, so only large essential businesses and government appointees can make changes to the network - in other words, this world is free of Rick Rolling. The currency itself is in CAPs: Chip of Achievement Percentage, which is just a fancy way of saying that it propagates by the hour through official workers. Most people don't speak in terms of Caps when buying/selling items, but rather in hours, as Caps are directly proportional to a person's overall production over time. It's a somewhat superfluous currency, as most people end up spending the vast majority of it the moment it's received. The world government distributes the currency, and the world government distributes the resources it garners from the workers. In other words, the economy is very controlled and tight-knit; it's kinda socialist, in a sense. Of course, there are still some incredibly wealthy, and others who are incredibly poor; both deal in saved-up Caps from their various methods (i.e. "being a CEO" or "robbery"). The black market mainly deals in trading goods over Caps, though, as the currency is very traceable and dangerous to use in illegal situations. Basically, you'd be more likely to sell the jewel for some kind of secondary currency (like criminal favors, special goods, or in some rare cases actual coins made by literal mint mafias). Third of all: Unfortunately, you aren't likely to be getting that far.
Shining Silhouette he/him Posted September 11, 2022 Posted September 11, 2022 Quote Fascinating, that makes sense in this kind of world. I went back and edited that line to make it fit with your info. Are there any other cultural things we should know about? In-world swears, idioms and the like?

Fine. Thank you, it seems to have worked. What's the technology level in this world, like, holograms, voice control, what would Jan have since he's pretty high-tech? Jan looked around the room, everyone seemed to be introducing themselves to each other. I think I'll wait until training has started in earnest to make friends, I'm here to stay and I need to see if they are too. He set the overstuffed Cytocorps issued suitcase down next to his bunk. He unzipped it and began pulling out clothes, he stored everything in a convenient cubby under the bed. Channelknight Fadran Posted September 19, 2022 Author Posted September 19, 2022 About twenty percent of the cadets were late to their first training session. That was unnacceptable by his standards, but was somehow better than last year's turnout. The Captain grunted to himself a couple times as the stragglers filed in. "We're starting off simple!" He announced. "You're running! You're running for half an hour, and whenever you hear my whistle you're dropping down and giving me ten push-ups! If any of you are left after that, we'll move on."
The Bookwyrm he/him Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Yisten stood with the rest of the Cadets, a surprising number of which had come in late. Don't they realize how important this all is? They were training to join the fight for humanity itself. Why were they showing up late? When the Captain detailed exactly what they'd be doing, Yisten wasn't sure how to feel. On one hand, it seemed simple. On the other, he guessed it would probably feel far worse than what he was thinking when it was over. Either way, when the Captain blew the whistle, he started running.
EmulatonStromenkiin he/him Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Sêron sighed, then started running. People trying to sneak out had kept her awake, but she had gotten a decent amount of sleep, thankfully. If the others wanted to wash out, so be it. She would stay in, and avenge her father. She would.
Channelknight Fadran Posted September 19, 2022 Author Posted September 19, 2022 The whistle blew. Krĵen dropped onto his hands and feet as dictated, pumping out the first few push-ups with ease. He used the quick break in stride to catch a few breaths while he stood up, glancing at the others around him. He'd gone farther than most on the track by now, though there were plenty of people ahead of him still. Some of them were going full sprint. He imagined they'd wipe out early. The Captain had never said how fast they had to run, after all. So far, so good. If only that would be the case for the rest of these thirty minutes...
