Reckoner89 Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 I was re-reading RoW chapter 97 "Freedom" as part of a Navani re-read I'm doing. This is the chapter where Navani successfully creates anti-voidlight. On this second read through I have so many questions about the implications of this chapter. As such this isn't so much a theory as a brain-dump of questions and speculations which I invite you to tear apart, offer objections to, or point me in the direction of WoBs which might shed further light. So the most important lines I want to draw attention in this chapter are Navani's hypothesis on what might allow the creation of anti-voidlight, and what the inspiration for this hypothesis was. First - Navani creates a vacuum and allows voidlight to travel through it saying "I believe this is the only way to completely separate Voidlight from the songs of Roshar" and Raboniel comments that Navani believes that light "doesn't emit the rhythm itself, but echoes it". Navani then wants the first thing the light "hears" when it touches matter is the anti-voidlight tone she has created. Second - Navani is inspired in this research by her knowledge of magnetism and the ability to change its polarity. She speculates "So were they really changing the polarity of the magnet? Or were they blanking the existing polarity - then rewriting it with something new?" We know that these speculations, true or not lead Navani to the breakthrough of creating anti-light, so there is definitely something to this. So my questions: 1) If one were to place an infused gem into a vacuum chamber and seal it, would the Light in the gem become blanked? Or does Light need to leave the gem within a vacuum to be blanked? 2) If Navani had instead been playing Honor's tone rather than the anti-Voidlight tone, would the gem have been infused with Stormlight? Or did the experiment only work because it was going Voidlight to anti-Voidlight, which is an easier conversion? 3) If the answer to the first part of question 2 is yes, then does that mean that all one has to do to convert one flavour of Light into pure unflavoured Light is seal it within a vacuum? 4) If a bunch of unflavoured Light gems were taken up in a space ship with a Radiant, would the Radiant be able to absorb them? 5) Could pure unflavoured Light be transported off Roshar without causing the many issues that have had trying to transport Stormlight? 6) If so, if a bunch of gems were blanked, placed in a vacuum chamber and taken to Scadrial and then the chamber was opened, would they remain blank or would the Light become Harmonylight? 7) Dalinar fills gemstones by opening a conduit to the spiritual realm. Presumably the Investiture there is of the pure unflavoured kind. Why does it immediately become Stormlight when Dalianr opens his perpendicularity? There are three tones of Roshar, why not a random assortment of Voidlight gems, Stormlight gems and Lifelight gems? I have many more side and supplementary questions about this, but seven is probably enough to be going along with. So - please tear all this apart!
Frustration Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 So we know inentless Investiture could be made, but I don't think that this is the right way to do it.

Do we? As I understand it, all investiture in the cosmere is aligned with some shardic intent since the moment of the shattering. I think intent is an inherent property of investiture, I don't know if you could make intentless investiture. Maybe you could make investiture that's equally intented toward all shards? I suppose that would be the same
in Truth, watcher of tv he/him Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 I think the issue with a few of your points is that the gems are Rosharan matter, and so will be humming the Rosharan tunes. The point of putting the Light in a vacuum was to separate it from anything Rosharan. When it comes to if Stormlight could be converted to anti-voidlight, I think that’s a detail yet to be explained, the next book will probably settle some questions like that. My guess is the Light still remembers what it’s supposed to be, and won’t just become a random Light when it exits the vacuum. As for Dalinar producing Stormlight; he’s opening Honour’s Perpendicularity, so the Light would be Storm flavoured on the way through.
Rg2045 Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 I have a theory in the roughs so to speak that gems would need to be filled with investiture inside a vacuum to be “pure investiture” then you could make all sorts of things with it, for one example, if you could make preservations light then their is WoBs saying how you can change the state of it to a solid and bam full blown mistborn literally anywhere in the cosmer
cometaryorbit Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 1-3. It's not clear that Navani's process is really completely unkeying the Light in the process, so it might not be usable to create "pure unflavored" Investiture. There's a WOB that it might not be 100% unkeyed in the transition (though clearly sufficiently weakened in association to make it work). 4. Who knows? Does the ability to draw on Light require a Connection, or is it more like an Identity/interference issue where no "charge" means compatible with anything? 5. Probably, if you could make it. 7. Dalinar is bonded to the Stormfather, who is very much of Honor. I don't think he's drawing on "pure unflavored Investiture" in the Spiritual Realm - I think he's drawing on Investiture that was once Honor. I actually don't think "unflavored Investiture" exists in the Spiritual Realm, or at all outside processes like what Navani's doing. All Investiture was assigned to a Shard at the Shattering, even pre-Shattering things done by Adonalsium. 1
