CosmereMaths Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 Ever since Rhythm of War and finding out that Nergaoul was sunk in the ocean I’ve thought about the logistics of a physical realm mission to the bottom of the ocean. It’s even possible that Ba-Ado-Mishram was sunk too. Kaladin or any radiant could probably do it holding stormlight with Navani’s arm fabrial or lashings and possibly using adhesion to manipulate currents if possible. However I also believe a Fabrial Submarine is possible. The first major challenge would be overcoming the pressure of the depths which could either be done by having the submarine soulcast into a strong material or using half-shards to hold it together. It could move using paired gemstones like the 4th-bridge. Depending on how long it needs to stay underwater it may require a transformation surgebinder to replace the air periodically. If the bottom of the ocean corresponds to underground in shadesmar then the submarine would probably be the easiest way to retrieve the Thrill. 1

My brother thinks this is what Navani's strange ship designs are about, fabrial submarines. When I started RoW, I thought they were about the fourth bridge, but since Syl turned herself into a copy of the image without understanding what it was, it must be something else.
Quantus he/him Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 I think they are, or were originally intended, as the eventual form of the 4th Bridge airships, ones that are self-contained and self-maneuvering like like boats. Now that they know what Surge Fabrials really are and have made steps to bring more of them into the war effort, we might see Gravitation Fabrials that allow airships without needing all the Connectors and ropeworks in Urithitu. As I see it, Submarines would be the Version 3 after that, taking a self-operating Gravity Airship and making it watertight, ideally with life support (soulcasting to freshen the air) and maybe Edgedancer anti-friction on the hull to slide through the water much easier.
Frustration Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 Using riverspren and steel fabrials should be able to push water away from them. Either for airlines to the surface, or as a form of propulsion.
ConfusedCow Posted July 31, 2022 Posted July 31, 2022 And the plan is to use one submarine to search all the ocean depths for one burlap sack? All you're going to find is the Tai Na's bigger meaner cousin. 1
