Virtually impossible to pick favorites when there's soooo much greatness in the Cosmere! But let's try.

Spoliers for everything the charachter has been on in my thoughts.

16. Adolin Kholin

Spoiler

Barely didn't make it but he's so just damn lovable. How he cares for Adolin, Shallan, Renarin, Maya, and...well, pretty much everyone is amazing. He's earned his right to Ascend into my list

15. Steris Harms

Spoiler

She's just wonderful. I love how prepaired she is for everything and I think Era 2 is greatly improved in Bands with letting her shine a bit more. Not higher on my list 'cause Era 2 is not amongst my prefered Cosmere books.

14. Wan ShaiLu

Spoiler

Not sure if I love her or I love The Emperor's Soul but tES is so Shai focused that I would find it hard to separate them. Either way, her views on life, art and realmatic theory are fascinating. She's a worthy Spotholder.

13. Sixth of the Dusk

Spoiler

Great work on a charachter that barely talks and sees the world in a rather specific way.

12. Lightsong the Bold (Stennimar)

Spoiler

His charachter arc was my favorite one from Warbreaker. A god that doesn't believe in his own religion is an interesting idea, sure, but here it speaks to much more than just that.

11. Renarin Kholin

Spoiler

He's a great charachter though I feel we haven't had enough of him to be able to fully tell. Everything happening with him is really interesting. Also, I'm not gonna lie. I'm loving the gay rep.

10. Elend Venture

Spoiler

First off, I love how much of myself I see in him. That alone is enough for him to join the 16 chosen, but in general I find him to be very well written and with a very compelling and transformarive arc.

9. TenSoon

Spoiler

My favorite non-human charachter. I love kandra, their culture and idiosyncrasy, and despict being somewhat of a rebel, TenSoon is our window into kandrahood. Other than that he's amazing, the moment he technichally betrays Zane to help Vin makes me weep and he was key to Sazed's recovery from his crisis of faith ( and, no spoilers but good old Saze might be kind of high on my list)

8. Vin Venture

Spoiler

Is almost cosmerely acclaimed that Vin is one of Sanderson's best initial charachters. He did an amazing job of making her interesting and relatable. Her arc is one of the best crafted and with greater growth....and with so many cool reveals!

7. Navani Kholin.

Spoiler

The most recent one to Ascend into my list. I always liked her but after RoW I had to give her spot. Her arc with Raboniel and finally accepting she's an amazing scholar was the best of the book. The Mother of Machines is here! Journey before Destination, you bastard!

6. Taravangian

Spoiler

Best villain ever. Even on tWoK I was already loving his charachter. Note that I don't have to agree with his worldview to think it's very well executed. His machiavellian ways make some sense and I've actually found myself rooting for him at some points. Also, the whole Intelligence vs Passion thing makes for great storytelling. I was a bit disappointed his plans seemed to be defeated after OB but then in RoW....well, let's just say my list is not the onlything Taravangian has Ascended to...

5. Szeth.

Spoiler

Szeth-son-Honor, Skybreaker sworn to the will of Dalinar Kholin, wore white on the day he was to be chosen a favorite charachter. It was love ay first sight...of the pages of tWoK. I read To Kill and insrantly knew this was a complex compelling charachter or whom I needed to know more about. From Truthless to Skybreaker, from enemy assassin to allied bodyguard, no one has paid a higher price to stay in the path of Honor.

4. Lift

Spoiler

Her first Interlude is my favorite one in all SA. She was so fun, interesting and weird. And she's still surprising me. Then I read Edgedancer and realized how smart she actually is in her own strange way of seeing things. She's going to make an amazing SA backhalf charachter but she's already on my top 5!

Also, pancakes.

3. Hrathen

Spoiler

Note that I already said Taravangian is my favorite villain. Well, what you are witnessing here is a full fledge hero in all his right. When Sarene says on his funeral something along the lines of "He was right all along. He really did came to save us all" after he said so many times he had come for that purpose and I had always thought "yeah, sure, you manipulative cremling", I cried like a lot.... You went to the Beyond a Hero and a Hero you stand on my list.

2. Jasnah Kholin

Spoiler

Is Jasnah. Do I even have to say anything else? Count me in for a Jasnah fan club any day now. As a fellow Elsecaller, she's everything I wish I were. Counting the minutes until we get more of her in the back half.

Also, I had to beg her not to make me smoke for giving her the second place...

1. Sazed

Spoiler

May Harmony be with us. The theologist turned God is the best charachter arc ever. FIGHT ME.

Jokes aside, his arc really is incredibly  well crafted. So many things about him appealed to me reading Mistborn. His speech pattern, his faith (and lack of ir ay times), his quiet but rebellious spirit, his love of knowledge and of teaching.

Sazed, you are one of the greats. Never fade from human memory. If only one Coppermind must survive I hope it speaks greatly of you.

PS: I could've talked forever about this charachter; but this was just enough to explain my order without going into too much detail, I think.

Spoiler

PS2: I asked Midius to Ascend into my 16 as he is, of course, one of my favorite charachters ever; but he refused. Apparently he has a reputation of rejecting this sorts of offerings that he has to uphold.

Also, something about having to go 'cause Design didn't know where to put the coats on her bar. Weird.

I'll give a cheater answer like Brandon and say that my favorite character changes based on which book I'm currently reading and which character I'd like to be more like based on what's going on in my life. A lot of my favorite characters have attributes that in one way or another I try to emulate. The ones with character moments that I end up going back and rereading include: Dalinar, Kaladin, Kelsier, Vin, Lightsong, Taln, Raoden, Elend, Leras, Spook...

If I had to narrow it down based on number of rereads... Kelsier, Kaladin, Leras, Dalinar, Taln.

I'm idealistic.

This is really difficult! I love so many of them, and my list would probably be different every time someone asks, but here are my thoughts right now:

1. Shallan

2. Kaladin

3. Lift

4. Navani

5. Vin

With the back five being:

6. Dalinar

7. Wayne

8. Lightsong

9. Marasi

And honourable mentions for Shai and Vivenna.

I also just find villains/morally ambigous characters generally interesting.

I agree with you completely. After several rereads I have grown to appreciate Amaram more and more. He's not among my overall favorites, but I see him as someone with good intentions who was heavily misguided. To the point that his ultimate fate is one of the saddest in the cosmere. If it wasn't for the outside manipulation he could have turned out to be a true hero, unfortunately he took the wrong path.

I also feel similarly about Moash, in fact I feel that way about every villainous entity in the cosmere. They're all just a product of one bad day. Makes them much more complex and interesting and that's why in order to list my favorite characters I gotta split it up between heroes and "villains" (of which I don't believe there are any truly evil characters in the cosmere... Except people like the Cinder King I guess).

The "good" guys

1. Kaladin

2. Hoid

3. Vin

4. Dalinar

5. Pattern

6... Lopen, Kelsier, Adolin, Shallan, Jasnah, Wax, Aux, Nightblood, Teft, argh too many fantastic characters!

Now for the "bad" guys

1. Lord Ruler

2. Amaram

3. Odium

4. Moash

5. Captain Crow? Enchantress? I dunno, cosmere needs some more bad girls I think

List is subject to change on any given day, aside from Kaladin who is locked in at #1.
