NameIess Posted December 15, 2021 Posted December 15, 2021 So, we have this WoB from the mini-con that says that if Nightblood pulverized an Honorblade, you could repair it with investiture: Quote Questioner (paraphrased) could NB pulverize an honorblade to nonexistence? What would happen? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) yes. you would need to repair it with investiture, otherwise would be like a shardplate. You'd have godmetal dust, or add investiture and reconstitute it, or change to other states. All possibilities. Mini-Con 2021 (Nov. 22, 2021) So that got me thinking: If you cut an Honorblade in half with Nightblood, then added tons of investiture to both halves, could you replicate the Honorblade? Obviously this wouldn't work with shardblades, but Honorblades aren't alive, so I think it could work.
Frustration Posted December 15, 2021 Posted December 15, 2021 (edited) Well that would require you to overcome the congitive perception of their only being ten Honorblades which would not be easy, we're talking seven thousand years of perception fighting against you. Thinking of an object as one object and it heals that way? That's kind of how objects behave. Spoiler Questioner I wanted to ask whether cake has a soul? In Realmatic theory, stuff has souls. So, somebody turns wheat into flour, and flour has a soul. Do they come together when I bake the cake? Brandon Sanderson ...So, this gets into some weird cosmere theory stuff. The level that if you are a student of philosophy, you'll recognize just wearing on the sleeve where this one came from. This is a mashup of Shinto beliefs and the theory of the forms by Plato, and kind of its own weird thing, that became Realmatic theory in the cosmere... So, in the cosmere, things take on an Identity and a soul based on how people perceive them. It's human perception that is creating a lot of this, because the various powers that made the universe have this sort of desire to be sentient. And power left long too long in the cosmere starts thinking, that's just how it goes, and starts thinking of itself the way it is perceived. So, that cake, as soon as its created, the disparate parts of the souls start being thought of as a cake, and start gaining some traction as a cake. If you left that cake alone long enough, which wouldn't take too long for a cake because people don't look at cake and think "Oh, a bunch of wheat and flour." They think "Cake." That thing will start having a combined soul of the various bits of power, and the longer you leave it, the more permanency it's gonna have as a Spiritual artifact in the cosmere. So, yes, cake has a soul. Oathbringer Glasgow signing (Dec. 2, 2017)
#1 Taln Fan he/him Posted December 15, 2021 Posted December 15, 2021 Yeah I think perception would just play a role in that, you’d have to leave the two halves of the blade apart for a while so that they stop seeing themselves as one sword. At least that’s my understanding of it. I think that this could work, but would be extremely difficult in practice.

Infinite Honorblades means infinite surgebinders.

You have to convince the two pieces that they are not the Same Object while simultaneously maintaining that they are Incomplete as they are. Otherwise it would act like Plate and choose a "primary" to regrow and the other would fade. Or else you'd have accidentally convinced the Honorblade that it was supposed to be much shorter and/or lacking a handle, which will remove it's motivation to "Regrow" anything. 1

It's not just the person doing it, it's the blade itself and everyone on Roshar(Hundreds of millions, if not already in the billions),and on top of that, you can't even have people think of it as two peices of the same whole, but as two completly different blades, otherwise you will have the same result you get when trying to repair different peices of Shardplate, where only one is fixed and the other crumbles to dust. To put this in percpective it takes more than fifty years for a rug to be considered part of a building, and Honorblades have been around for so much longer.

Yeah, that makes sense. You could maybe pull off some connection shenanigans with a Bondsmith though. Disconnect the halves so that they think their other half was destroyed, then repair both of them to make two. 1
apepi Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 I mean, I'd argue that radiant spren might be able to be split in half and create two different spren. We have seen flame spren do that kind of thing I believe right? Now whether it is a good experience.. I don't know.
