  1. This topic thread is to be used to discuss The Lord of the Rings and other of Tolkien's works. Conversation starters: - Who is your favorite character (in all of Tolkien's Middle Earth stories) and why? - What is the biggest beef you have with the Lord of the Rings? - If you could ask Tolkien one question, what would it be? - If you could be a member of any race and community in Middle Earth, what would it be and why?* Be nice and have fun discussing these amazing books! *This DOES NOT include angelic beings such as the Maiar (Istari), Ainur, or Illuvatar.
  2. So, yesterday I finished a re-read of Rhythm of War, and then today wrapped up my annual re-watch of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy (if the username didn't clue you in, I'm a fan;) - like the books better, but enjoy the movies too). It got me thinking of Taravangian's ascension and his plans to use Odium's power to 'save everyone' and it reminded me of a quote from Tolkien's letters about what might have happened if Gandalf had been corrupted by the Ring. "Gandalf as Ring-Lord would have been far worse than Sauron. He would have remained 'righteous', but self-righteous. He would have continued to rule and order things for 'good', and the benefit of his subjects according to his wisdom (which was and would have remained great)." A bit later, he added that "Sauron multiplied... evil, but he left good distinguishable from it. Gandalf would have made good detestable and seem evil." Now, Taravangian's no Gandalf (he's more like Saruman in some ways, 'his feet were on a crooked path,' though IMO the Cosmere's closest parallel to Saruman is probably actually Ishar - though that would be a topic for another post) but the way Odium!Taravangian and Ringlord!Gandalf are described makes them seem somewhat similar in motivation and action, and when you throw in Harmony's letter talking about how he most feared the combination of Odium's power and intent with a mind saner and more cunning than Rayse (who would be Sauron in this analogy)... yeah. Brrr. Not really a super insightful analogy, considering the LotR characters obviously aren't part of the Cosmere, but it did make me think of exactly how Odium's new Vessel is shaping up to be far more dangerous than the old one.
  3. From the album: Cosmeme & Crossmere

Commissioned piece. Crossover description: Hoid from the Cosmere and Gandalf from Lord of the Rings performing dragon fireworks show, with Kaladin, Syl, the Dog, Frodo and Bilbo watching. It's really an unexpected crossover but fun to draw!
  4. I said I'd make it, so here I am. It'll probably die quickly, since I think I have yet to make a thread that didn't experience sudden lithobraking maneuvers, but, y'know. Some quick things to cover, I'm going to say, for the moment, that anything that happens in the published Silmarillion, Hobbit, or Lord of the Rings, doesn't need spoiler boxes. Just to minimize confusion, however, discussion of drafts that were not in the final books (History of Middle-earth, mostly) might need spoiler boxes to keep things clear. (An example would be trying to figure out who Gil-galad's father is, since that requires a lot of digging through old drafts.) I probably don't need to say this, but keep discussions respectful! Not really worried about this, since Sanderfans are super nice, and so are Tolkien fans, so it's like a Venn Diagram of wonderfulness. Y'all are amazing. ) If this thread gains traction, I'll see about putting up a poll so we can vote on what, if anything, to spoiler box. Okay, to kick off the discussion! Who are your favorite character(s) in the Legendarium? Mine are Faramir, Maglor, and Tuor. Oh, and Voronwe, he has the ocean Vibe. Can't explain it. From this, you may have gathered that I like blue. Oh, and here's another thing I just remembered. In the books, the Rohirrim were described as having long, braided hair. How come no one ever picks up on that? If anyone knows what an ell is, would you be willing to share your knowledge?
  5. I'd like to know the opinions of those of you who spent way too much time on Middle Earth and both read the series and saw the movies. I, personally, am very biased because I first watched the movies at age nine, and have marathoned them every year since, whereas I only read the books for the first time two years ago. I find the movies more enjoyable. The books are more of a walk through Tolkien's world, while we watch people in the world, and the movies are much more character-driven. Anyway, I'm open to discussion and an opinion-change!
  6. So I discovered that Amazon will be producing a Lord of the Rings prequel series. I have mixed opinions. In more short form I don't know how well they can pull if off. In my own humble opinion a story centered on Aragorn as a prequel would be a disaster. However, one centered on say, Faramir and Boromir (and other secondary characters) could easily take off and do well. Do any other Tolkien fans have an opinion?
  7. First this will most likely contain SPOILERS for BOTH STORMLIGHT BOOKS! So, Adolin is among the most skilled swordfighters we have met in the Cosmere. I thought it would be fun to debate how he would do against other skilled swordfighters, like Lan Mandragoran, Aragorn, Lothar, you name it. For the sake of discussion, Adolin has no Shardplate, and his opponents have swords that can block Shardblades. So, which fantasy swordsmen could beat Adolin in a duel? Didcuss!
  8. MR13: Treachery on the Terris Peaks GMs: Elbereth and Twei History turns and shifts, and a little piece of metal moves just slightly... “Right. You’re qualified, you’re coming. Your bag, please?” The young man froze. “Why do you need my bag?” “Inspection. We need to know if we should provide you with a better bag or if yours is sufficient. Also, extraneous metalminds aren’t allowed. There shouldn’t be a reason for you to have a coppermind, for instance. I’ll be carrying the only one, to record what happens at the Well.” He very reluctantly handed his bag over. “I’m not perfectly packed yet,” he tried. “There’s some stuff that I want to take out...” “Really? I thought you said you were ready to go, right now.” “Well, yes... I mean...” He stopped as she pulled out a metal cylinder. “Don’t open that, please! It’s private.” “Privacy isn’t private when you’re dealing with the protection of the most important man in the world,” commented Tindomë wryly, opening the metal cylinder. It looked to have words printed on it. The young man stayed silent as she read, head hung in defeat. She looked up at him. “‘He must never be allowed to complete his quest’? ‘Alendi was never the Hero of Ages’? ‘Alendi must not reach the Well of Ascension’? This is signed by Kwaan. The traitor!” She threw his backpack back at him. “Get out of my sight. No traitors will be allowed on this mission.” He stared at her with hate. “Very well. But I have friends who are packmen. You can’t stop them all!” He turned and stalked away. “Friends, huh?” she said softly to herself. Unfortunately, Rashek was right. She didn’t have nearly enough packmen yet, and she didn’t even know if she could trust those she’d already accepted. She looked down the long line of hopefuls. Most she could dismiss off the bat, of course. Previous experience as a packman was required, and most of them didn’t even have that. But those who did... She couldn’t turn away a willing hand, even if that hand might turn traitor. She’d just have to try to figure out who was who as fast as possible, and make sure Alendi was protected at all times. Tindomë rubbed her forehead. She’d never thought this was going to be easy, but it wasn’t supposed to involve traitors. She tossed the metal sheet to the ground and beckoned forth the next applicant. 9. Has anyone here been watching these films? I just purchased the extended edition of the first film and saw the second recently and was mildly annoyed the delayed the final film until December of 2014 However, that being said I loved the film, it will probably make Tolkien fanatics weep in more than one way but it was a top notch film overall! Beautifully put together and beautifully coordinated with a wonderful use of CGI. I've got to say I haven't seen a better film in ages! This is one thing I have to give producers credit for. (sigh)
