Pretty sure it's called innate investiture when it was around pre-Shards and hasn't been hijacked by any of them yet.
-
Uh, it's pretty heavily implied that Korathi religion is related to Devotion and Derethi to Dominion, especially when you realise that Dominion is more likely to mean the power or right to govern as opposed to a territory or kingdom, and that neither meaning really has any relevance to Korathi beliefs. The real reason it's unlikely that Dominion's Perpendicularity is in Elantris, however, is that AonDor is named after Devotion, (her name is Aona) and the Skaze are named after Dominion. (his name is Skai, and it rhymes with "bay," iirc) I can't imagine Skai having his Perpendicularity in a stronghold of Aona's magic users, no matter how friendly they are. His power simply wouldn't naturally condense in such a location. Drawing conclusions about the level of co-operation between Devotion and Dominion because of the Dor may be unwise, as Sel is the only planet we've seen where multiple Splintered shards are present. It may well be that the merging of Spiritual power is a result of having any two Splintered Shards on one planet, or simply an artifact of how they were killed. (there are some hints that something very disastrous happened to the transition between the Cognitive and Spiritual realms around Sel...) I'm certainly not ruling out that the shards were on friendly terms or even lovers, I'm just saying that we don't have any evidence just yet.

If it were the sunlight, it'd be rather odd that Sand Masters couldn't directly use the sunlight itself to Master. I'm pretty sure it's the lichen mentioned in the newsletter, and that the sunlight just recharges it with investiture. (either through some odd photosynthesis, or simply because the sun is somehow Taldain's perpendicularity) Sand mastery doesn't seem to have a varying focus anyway, rather, everything seems to be achieved through the same reservoir of power.

As soon as Kaladin thinks he has a chance so that Shallan can get back to properly wooing Adolin, because they are incredibly cute together and she deserves better than Frowny McSlavebrand. Not that I don't like him better when he's feeling less depressed, but I think people want them together more for Kaladin's sake than Shallan's. And she actually seems happy with Adolin, so unless there's a natural reason Shallan isn't happy, I kinda want them to stay together. Especially as the idea of Adolin going from being the Big Shardbearer On Campus to the playing second fiddle to his fianceé and being the only one alive in his family who isn't either a royal or a Radiant greatly amuses me and strikes me as an excellent character arc for him to deal with.
-
It could be that, or it could simply be that Shallan managed to sneak up on them both by accident and Ivory is not the type of Spren that finds it easiest to hide. Your speculation is totally valid, I'm just not so sure we need to go that far to explain why Shallan saw Ivory for a moment.

Aaah, right, as in three observable ways to use Investiture. It's a bit weird to use the term manifestation figuratively like that when actually referring to magic, lol, when it's word that has a literal supernatural meaning. Still, I suppose he was trying to in-universe the term "magic system" and didn't want to use the word "system" because it sounded too modern to him, however that use of the word "manifestation" is also pretty modern, so...
-
It's a "deleted scene" from WoR that gives us a little idea of what Jasnah got up to during the time we didn't see her near the beginning of the story.
-
Shallan technically does something "magicky" (magical?) in WoK once too. It's on my "list of scenes/ideas for character trailers" that I need to discuss with Darkness sometime when we're not both flat-out. I raised the same possibility with Darkness about using WoR, but I think he wants to seperate WoK and WoR for trailers.

Does Brandon hate barbers/hair stylists?
Ari replied to one winged jhereg's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Adolin will be an awesome character whether or not he ends up a Radiant. In fact, there's worse arcs for him than having to come to terms with being the fianceé of someone more magical than he is, and find his own way to be relevant in a family where basically everyone is a Radiant or royalty or both. -
I think it's fair enough to simply say Hemalurgy is "usually lethal" and move on, Djarskublar. You clearly get what Brandon's talking about with Hemalurgy, as his normal analogy is that it's like stapling through someone's soul into someone else's, ripping out some of their very being, and then creating a temporary hole in the spiritweb it order to affix the extra power or attribute, which then heals if the spike is removed nonlethally. Can I ask- since when has "manifestation of investiture" been a term for a magic system? o_O That's so clunky, especially given that the closest synonym for "manifestation" is something along the lines of "materialisation" or "apparition." It seems like you'd have to do an incredible degree of dictionary-bashing to make that even make sense.

Spoilers for Mistborn and it's effect on the Cosmere.
Ari replied to Rage_Fortress's topic in Cosmere Discussion
FYI, if you want to mark spoilers, just mention the name of the book in the title in square brackets, eg. "[Mistborn Era 2] Talking to Worldhoppers". (edit: obviously you also want to be sufficiently vague in the title, which takes a little getting used to!) You don't specifically need to call out spoilers for book that aren't very recently released on Cosmere Theories, but everywhere else you do, and sometimes it's good courtesy even here. As to the topic at hand, this is also another reason why I'm really curious about whether hemalurgy varies the required spike material from world-to-world, whether it can be done using metal spikes by anyone with Scadrian sDNA, or whether it merely requires any uninitiated person to intend to practice Hemalurgy and to spike valid areas. (Era 1 isn't always particularly clear about this, but if you're not spiking the victim through the heart, there are specific bind points to steal specific powers, as well as to receive them, so it is possible to fail even though you did drive a spike through someone) -
Feruchemical Steel; Steelrunning, a Comprehensive Conglomeration.
Ari replied to Magestar's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'm pretty sure Feruchemy is end-neutral if you tap at up to the rate at which you can store, and you could argue it becomes "end-negative" when you're effectively withdrawing more than your normal feruchemical strength would allow for. (as the speed of storing is variable based on the strength of the feruchemist with their power, so a feruchemist tapping a feruchemical power from a Nicrosilmind will increase their speed at storing the relevant Feruchemical attribute, and presumably also the maximum amount they can tap before losing charge faster than normal) Although I think Brandon would probably argue that even tapping something extra-fast is end-neutral, it's just that some of the power is used up in the process of expanding your body's (or mind's or spirit's) capacity to absorb the feruchemical charge. I imagine Feruchemy is never "end-positive," even temporarily.- 36 replies

If Hoid acquires all forms of investiture...
Ari replied to zeppomarks's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah M:SH was like, amazing for Cosmere Theories. Brandon regards it as being substantially similar to holding a shard, and has noted there are permanent effects to having held so much of the power at one time. Check through the Mistborn annotations for more detailed info, I'm pretty sure this is one of those pieces of extra context you don't need to go WoB-trawling for. Brandon refers to the Lord Ruler as a Sliver, and at numerous points he has defined this as holding a significant fraction of the power of a shard on a temporary basis: You can find the source quote on Theoryland. edit: Sorry, I left out the thing I meant to note most clearly- that Brandon still uses the term Ascension in his annotations, and talks about how there was real significance to that event beyond the practical things noted in the book, and that not all of the mysticism that it's treated with in the book is entirely due to the religion. He really was temporarily a God. A slightly smaller one than a Shard, sure, and very temporary, but whether you term it an ascension or not, it's a significant event. -
Yeah see this is why I don't guess Shard names, it's too easy to get stuck into "is this a synonym or is it not?" For instance, I'm not sure there'd be much room for a Justice given that Honour kind of fulfills a lot of the same roles. It'd be like having both Odium and Revenge. Likewise Cultivation is basically a combination of Metamorphosis and Progress, and Decay is definitely not a thing as it was an earlier attempt at Ruin's name. I'm not sure active/inactive is a relevant distinction, although it could be depending on how you defined it. So far I would class every single shard we've seen unshattered as Active, and I certainly wouldn't agree that Odium is "inactive." I had been considering opposites as related to each other in the same quarter of a table but diagonal to each other, which you haven't done for some notable pairings such as Preservation/Ruin, Odium/Devotion, and Autonomy/Dominion, so I'd be curious to hear why that is. Really, I think we probably need a few more Shard names to start coming up with reasonable approximations of a taxonomy, as it's so easy to juggle things around based on the gaps/speculation. (and especially with a lot of people misinterpreting the WoB about the hidden shard as its Intent being survival- or hiding-related) I'm also pretty sure the four quarters aren't going to be related to the metallic arts in classification, and that including Temporal is straight up wrong. My speculation to date is that Odium and Devotion are off in their own Emotion-related quarter, that Autonomy and Dominion are opposites with Honour sitting between them in a society-related quarter, and that Preservation and Ruin are opposites, with Cultivation and Endowment also being in opposite positions despite not being neat opposites, in a change-related quarter. But I still have no idea what the relevant taxonomy would be beyond that.

Heh yeah I was gonna guess "no axial tilt" was to blame for that, because then the mini-seasons would be down to mostly atmospheric conditions, perihelion and aphelion, (ie. how oval its orbit is) or axial wobbling, with atmospheric conditions usually winning.
-
Well, that and in magic systems where there are multiple types of power or effects to choose from, the focus is always the thing you vary to vary the effect. (eg. you vary the metal to store different attributes in Feruchemy, you vary the Command to Awaken things differently, you vary the shape/form in AonDor to choose between healing or traveling or whatever, etc...)
-
The question of course is if Sazed is unable to act because two of his intents are in conflict, or if it's because he's pulled equally in both directions. Because if it's the earlier one, you want an Intent that aligns well with either Preservation (like Honour) or Ruin, (like Cultivation) but if it's the latter, you want something that's likely to diverge from both of them so that you always have the option of following one of the three Intents. I expect it's the latter tbh, otherwise Adonalsium would have had some serious problems doing anything.

Heh maybe the Coppermind should read "and/or" instead of "and."
-
Um, he is definitely using Feruchemy. See Theoryland. Now, it's possible he found a way to access feruchemy without using the bead, or that he figured out how to make himself a Feruchemist and Allomancer using it. (as we also have reasonably strong implied use of emotional allomancy on-camera in WoR when he meets young Shallan, swallows something suspiciously like a metal vial, and then suddenly she's no longer suspicious of him) It's possible he's a Twinborn with emotional Allomancy and luck Feruchemy, but it's also possible Hoid is the only one running around as a Full Feruchemist and Mistborn atm. We also know he's probably already cracked immortality as of Elantris given that he shows up for Mistborn, which would be very difficult for him to do without having at least a "soft" immortality similar to TLR, (There's WoBs that imply very strongly that it's rather necessary for Worldhoppers to achieve immortality out there if you want to read them) if not full-blown immortality. So it looks like the reason he was gunning to be an Elantrian was for flexible powers, not immortality, and being a full feruchemist/mistborn would be about as flexible as you could need!

Odium is pretty heavily implied to be invested in Roshar now. Besides, if you were stuck in the system and needed to get Cultivation and Honour's remnants out of your way in order to get out, investing at least a little in Greater Roshar makes sense, even if it might be difficult to recover that power in the future. I'm not sure how he would have taken control of the Parshendi, for instance, without investing in the planet. I think you're taking the implication that Odium's Intent is to hate and be hated a bit far. While I absolutely think Odium can emotionally influence people, (and likely had some effect on Elhokar in WoR, for instance, especially seeing it goes away when Kaladin gets near) there's significant evidence that what he does to other Shards is merely to oppose and Splinter them. (M:SH is relevant here) Odium referring to actions you take that inspire hate means he wants to have hatred running both ways for everything he touches. He contains Adonalsium's divine hatred, AND he wants to inspire hatred of himself in others. That doesn't mean he unconsciously affects the vessels of other Shards, we don't even have evidence that such a thing is possible, and there are no implications of it in the book

Frost implies Adonalsium had a larger plan. He doesn't necessarily imply that he actually saw the shattering coming if you read closely, it depends who you think he means by "our interference," and whether you think it's actually related to his comments about Mr. A's "grand design." It's possible he's strictly talking about himself and Hoid interfering in the past. It's possibly a reference to the Shattering, as you suggest, if in fact Hoid and Frost were both involved in the canon version of relevant books, but he might not actually be intending any inference about Adonalsium having a plan to deal with it. It's also possible he's referring to the interference of people capable of worldhopping in general. There are a lot of inferences about the Letters that are slam dunks to make even though they're not technically 100% certain, but this isn't one of them, we'd need a bit more context to consider it likely that he's talking about a plan directly related to the Shattering there. It's certainly a fair theory though.

Stormlight Archive Youtube miniseries
Ari replied to Darkness Ascendant's topic in Stormlight Archive
Sure, done, I'll idle in the relevant channel and see if we can't get this thing set up to get started. If you're focusing on a trailer that sidesteps the issue of licenses for now, anyway, as I've never heard of an author having a problem with a fan book trailer, and that's essentially what we'd be doing to start off. -
Splintering is instead what happens when there's no mind attached to the magic of a Shard for a significant period of time, and the magic itself starts to gain sentience, like on Sel or Roshar, with Seons, Skaze, and Spren. As AonDor has no relation to Seons, nor presumably do the Dakhor monks' abilities relate to the Skaze, you can see that splinters aren't a necessary part of a magic system. (although they are involved on Roshar, but that may be because there were already Spren there when Honour and Cultivation arrived)

Stormlight Archive Youtube miniseries
Ari replied to Darkness Ascendant's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yeah, Brandon technically needs to license you to make an animated series without any copyright issues, but keep in mind, Brandon also technically needs to license you to distribute fanfiction of any type, and we know he doesn't have any problem with written fanfics. Normally if a film option were sold, there would be issues, as I think usually they take all rights except the book rights if the film actually gets made, so if Brandon doesn't license you before then, he won't be able to in the future. I think if you make it clear you're a free adaptation of his work, and you don't attempt to monetize the miniseries in any way, you'd probably be okay so long as there's no film option, and to be really safe, I'd suggest that it's distributed in a way that is outright promotional of Brandon's work. (I would suggest advertising the portrayed novel at the end of scenes) The other hitch is that this gets quite close to what Graphic Audio does, and they're actually licensed, so they might have cause to complain if it doesn't get its own license from Brandon. If you're interested in going ahead, I'd be happy to try my hand at adapting the Stormlight Archive to a script, which would allow you to start voice acting and might help with storyboarding things. It's not precisely my specialty, but I'm pretty confident I could pull it off. I actually adapted Dune once, (purely for my own purposes) but I unfortunately lost the file in a hard drive failure. I would actually suggest treating each "book" of Way of Kings and Words of Radiance as a miniseries rather than treating each whole novel as one series. That gives you the arcs naturally. Then if you're in a rush, you can skip the intermissions. -
I'm pretty sure that The God Beyond merely refers to the Vessel of Adonalsium that died and went into the Beyond.
