I just knew that I would not get any sleep for several days and I've just had two, 9 hour, six day weeks trying to get an order of 500 2Kilo easter eggs out the way for them to be raffled off in pubs throughout the country... still only 2/3 there, needs my sleeping time. Looking forward to my long weekend of reading. Plus I generally prefer paperbacks to hardbacks, I'm making an exception for this series but it has to be the proper Michael Whelan version, two different hardbacks is just madness. I'll read the kindle version first, Get the American hardback as soon as it can get here and the English paperback when that is available ---- Yup gut-punch. I'd say more but the epigraph is certainly relevant.

Woo Hoo! Just found an early copy in Manchester. I was just browsing through ----------- (store redacted) when I spotted a lone copy out on the shelf. I jumped straight to chapter 7 to see what was missing from the previews. -------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------- (information redacted) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------. I was sorely tempted to buy it but I've got the American cover pre-ordered so having the English one too would have been pointless, plus I've booked off Friday and Monday so I'll have a long weekend to reread it a few times (trying to ignore my Kindle Thursday morning will be hard). Anyway I resisted buying it even though it was right there in my hands! I did however detour back an hour later after doing my shopping to read just a bit more, unfortunately when I got back someone else was holding it, right there in his hand. I did get to skim through ch7 at least. If you really want to know what happened then ---------------------------(information redacted) --------------------------- 15 minutes later I was waiting for the tram when I checked my phone and found a message from my sister - Right that's 1007 pages read? OMG need to know what happens next, when is it out? - (I gave her my Kindle Fire a few weeks ago, I prefer my Kindle Touch) Needless to say she was quite pleased to find out she can read book 2 within a week.

"Thirty-eight days," Renarin read. "The end of all nations" "Well it's certainly a bold statement father but I doubt you'll convince the rest of Roshar to join the Euro" ----- She felt and heard the storm approach. The ground shook, the air roared. Bits of leaves swept across her in a chill gust, like scouts before an oncoming army that charged behind, the howling wind its battle cry. "My God" Shallan whispered "We should never have offered to host the BieberLlama festival, there are too few of us to hold back the crowds"

As we will be getting snippets Emailed to us from Tor.com every day starting Tuesday It seem like the perfect opportunity to get a bit... creative... in expanding them into full 'spoilers'. Who can give the best show of deliberately subverting a snippet with an imaginative twist? On your marks... Get set... EDIT GO!

Wow! There must be at least two copies in each of those boxes.

Which version(s) of the book will you purchase?
ChocolateRob replied to laeelin's topic in Stormlight Archive
I've got the American hardback, English paperback and Kindle version on pre-order. I'll normally take the ebook version over a hardback until the paperback is available but for this series I want the American covers as a bonus. I prefer reading paperback but Kindle is more convenient for a book this size. For a book with illustrations (or a comic book) it is better to read on a Kindle Fire but a normal Kindle is better for regular books. I've just given away my K-Fire to my sister so I'll not have that option and will have to make do, illustration wise, until I receive a pulp version. -
I looked over this thread and started to take pictures of my shelves but came to the conclusion that they were a complete mess. I spent the weekend cleaning my shelves and getting rid of all the pointless books that just took up space and neatly rearranged all the good stuff. Now I have perfectly nice shelves I’ve decided that instead of photographing them I’ll instead make a long list with no spacing whatsoever. Think of it as a wordsearch where all the answers are read from left to right following on from each other, then kiss your retinas goodbye. I’ve removed any ‘The’s from the start of any titles but kept them in the middles, any unimportant connecting words such as the, of and and are not capitalised but all the more important words mercifully are… AlcatrazversusEvilLibrariansScrivenor’sBonesKnightsofCrystaliaShatteredLensRedDwarfBetterThanLifeBackward sIncompetenceTruckersDiggersWingsStrataDarkSideoftheSunScienceoftheDiscworldGoodOmensSummerTreeWa nderingFireDarkestRoadRaptureSentinelMageKusgiel’sDartArmoredEarthseaQuartetTalesfromEarthseaOtherWin dGracelingFireBitterblueBesiegedExileSanctuaryAbhorsenChroniclesPlayingforKeepsAlloyofLawLegion&Emporer’ sSoulMistbornAdventureGameRithmatistElantrisFinalEmpireWellofAscensionHeroofAgesWarbreakerWayofShadow sShadow’sEdgeBeyondtheShadowsLyra’sOxfordWheelofTimethey’reallthereIcan’tbebotheredtypingthemall, thenam esareallveryforgetableanywayImeanseriouslytherearemaybethreethathelpyounarrowdowntheeventstherein, therest aregenericrubbishBlackPrismPrinceofThornsKingofThornsNameoftheWindWiseMan’sFearHarryPotterandthePhilos opher’s(notSorceror’s)Stone/ChamberofSecretsPrisonerofAzkabanGobletofFireOrderofthePhoenixHalfBloodPrince DeathlyHallowsNiorthernLightsSubtleKnifeAmberSpyglassMagician’sGuildNoviceHighLordMagician’sApprenticeAmb assador’sMissionRogueMeaningofLiffDeeperMeaningofLiffReturnoftheBunnySuicidesDresdenFilesagainIcan’tbebo theredtypingthemallbutatleasttheseonesallhavegoodnames,I’mincludingSideJobstooWayofKingsx2Hitchhiker’sGuid etotheGalaxyPoisonStudyMagicStudyFireStudyStormGlassSeaGlasslastbookwastoosquickyforme, tiredofauthorfrom thispointonSwordofShannaraElfstonesofShannaraWishsongofShannaraEncyclopediaofFantasy1996(reallyneedsne weditionbynow)Fish&SpidersSimon’sCatinKittenChaosversustheWorldLastHeroCompleteCalvinandHobbesC&HTent hAnniversaryBookC&HSundayPages1985to1995CreativeChocolateGirlGeniusNemiNemiIIUltimateEncyclopediaofFa ntasyalltheTerryPratchettsfromJingotopresentinhardbackalltheonesbeforethenwereactuallymysister’sthatjustleaves afewmoreShannarabooksfromthetalismanseriesTheseareallmypulpbooks(exceptanyonloan),someofwhicharealsoon mykindle, buttherearealsosomebooksonlyinkindleformatthatarequitegoodhoweverI’llnotgointothemnowIsupposeIcoul dmakealistofvideogamestoobutI’vegotover200ofthosethingsIthink,InevergetridofagameIlike. Well I didn't want to ruin it but there was that chapter where Kaladin is invited to one of the Lighteye feasts and he invites Syl as his official date. Sure it was awkward that he asked for a place to be set for her on the men's table next to him even though he stated that there was not to be any food served there (even though Syl is her usual size for this first part). After some time of having half a conversation with someone who isn't there (as it seems to the other guests) he gets up and asks Syl to dance A sudden quiet hangs in the air as everyone sees a madman dancing around in circles on his own, but every few moments there are random gasps of surprise as different people momentarily see a glowing young woman mirroring his every move. Those who see her don't want to speak of it and just keep watching while those who don't see are mystified at the strange reactions of those around them. ---------- It's a very heartwarming chapter as Kaladin truly expresses his thanks to the one who kept his hope alive in his darkest days, but I've given away far too much now.

I've got one for Windrunners. When someone is bugging you Pressure-Lash their feet to the ground but Gravity-Lash their whole body upwards. With all that blood rushing to their head they'll feel like they've been glued to the ceiling. Headaches and vertigo a go go Mwa Ha Ha haa!!!!

Well the release date is just over a month away now but we've run out of free previews and so the only solution is to honor the noble cryptics and create our own. I've been posting a few of my own in the comments under the 'official' previews on Tor.com but I've also noticed a few being added on the chatbox here over the last few days. These poor orphaned snippets of dubious canonicity need an official home and here it shall be. Warning - Outrageously suspect spoilers lie within ---------------------------------- How about that assassination attempt with the spandagger fabrial in chapter 26, there Kaladin was inspecting knives in the armory when one of them leapt off the rack straight for his eye. Luckily he was saved by a nearby (hidden) King's Wit who managed to steel push it off course, the assassin hidden at the back of the room getting yanked into the open by his conjoined weapon. -------- Also try not to get too attached to Teft cause that bit where he dies at the end is heartbreaking - "Teft!" Jasnah screamed, holding his bloody body in her arms "Why?" He didn't respond. He just stared into the air, eyes glazed over, his spirit gone. She shivered, pulling him close as his body cooled. "You can't die, you can't. Please." It was no use. Teft was dead. Really dead. As dead as a corpse with burnt out eyes. So very, very dead. "But you had so much more to teach me about the Radiants" She felt at his pulse, just in case. There was nothing. "Oh cruel world" she said sobbing. She poked him in the ribs, it could have been a bad joke. But there was no reaction, seeing as how Teft was completely and utterly dead.

What format do you enjoy the best for Brandon's books?
ChocolateRob replied to Mikanium's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Hmmmmm, well. I always preferred reading paperbacks as they're lighter, and have a better shape (for tessellating purposes). Also I've found that they last longer than hardbacks due to better flexibility. But when WoK came out I read the famous quote by Brandon's friend Howard Taylor about it being the best argument all year for getting an E-reader. So I got myself a kindle. I was less than amused to discover that WoK was not actually available on kindle yet, I mean come on, I got one because of that quote. Anyway it did come out after a while and yes it is certainly easier on one and I got the rest of Brandon's books on it too. Kindle makes it a lot more convenient to carry a huge amount of books around and I can pop into it quite easily when walking to and from work (It's a pretty straight road, no walking into things yet, only one dog mess incident) or on my lunch break. I use it for trying out new books I'm unsure of, if I like them I'll buy them in paperback too. For new books I know I'll like I prefer paperback but get on kindle too for convenience, as in, why am I working/eating/sleeping/breathing when I could be reading? I upgraded to kindle fire last year but went back to the regular one fairly quickly, much more comfortable, battery lasts longer, don't really like the fire's functionality. I tend to hand around my books to my sisters and cousin so sometimes have an extra copy just for that. If I can only get a book in hardback at first then I will and get rid of it when I can 'upgrade' to paperback. I realized a few weeks ago that my eldest sister (has a three girls, a 15yr, twin 9yr, so less spare time than others) had not read WoK yet so I loaned her my paperback. She finds the size (as in weight, not length) a bit of a pain so I've given her my 'spare' kindle fire on semi-permanent loan, she seems pretty pleased at that. I have just decided that I'm gonna make an exception for the Stormlight Archive and get all of them in hardback as well as paper and kindle. I'm not a fan of Brandon's American covers but stormlight hardbacks have all the extras and Mr Whelan is a pretty good exception. Warbreaker I had the PDF first, then american paperback, then british and kindle. I tend to bounce around a lot with formats and covers, the most important feature in buying any format is always what can get me the book soonest. (still waiting for Mitosis) -

Sorry King but Darnam beat you to it. The Shard of Ansaphones was the one I missed from the list. But I'm a nice guy and you're a Pterry fan so have eight imaginary superpoints on me. Back on topic there is the most pervasive Shard of them all, his dread hand is felt throughout all worlds causing you to... thingy, you know where you just can't... erm, like if you.. It always, you know like with nearly all japanese rpg heroes, there's always one who can't, erm, oh it's that funny word that means they can't... Urgh it's on the tip of my tongue I swear. They get it when they're hit on the head... or something's been living in their mind.. or something was just so horrible that their minds won't, thingy... cause of the wossname. Ooh, but another hit on the head might fix it. What was it you wanted? Oh right the oojitmebob with the power to... And it gets stronger the more you try to.... with it's erm... Yeah that's it the Returned were all cursed by it, Endowment didn't even notice him interfering each time, probably cause he could even get endowment to, erm, along with the rest too. yeah, in spades. Maybe a foil hat would help? There's his name too, it's... somethingnessy, and that guy who, with the knot in his hankie. He was there too he tried the, the... but he lost anyway... EDIT Ooh ooh it's... no, never mind, it's gone again.

Hmmm, how to improve his quantifying? First off, let's try timing. How about you try song? With a group of people singing the same song you can use measures of verses, lines and words with some accuracy, just pick a nice repetitive song. What is the Alethi equivalent of ten green bottles or 12 days of christmas? (or I know a song that will get on your nerves). Next you need ten freshly infused clearchips, try to get them from all around the camp and of different ages if possible (to randomize the chances that they were not manufactured together). The last element would be ten objects of the same standardized weight. Whatever the Alethi would use to weigh grain or some such, call it 1 Rosharan Kilogram weight or 1RKG. Random rocks would be far too imprecise. OK, begin the first experiment. Quality - Start the team singing the 'ten days of weeping' and infuse a new weight to the wall at the start of each line, wait until they start to fall off. Do they all fall at perfectly timed intervals in the order they were attached? If so it would appear that each chip has an equally measured amount of stormlight in it. The quality of the cut seems irrelevant but feel free to try again with larger amounts of chips. If they fall off more randomly then it would appear that there are differences between chips, in this case you need to repeat the experiment until you find a control group that attach the weights for the same amount of time. Hopefully though quality will prove to be a very minor factor if one at all, otherwise you may need to find a control group for each experiment. Experiment 2. Time - This time infuse a weight to the wall every day at the same time until the last of the spheres go dun by themselves. Did they remain for the same amount of verses/time each day or for progressively shorter periods in a measurable arc. Ex3. Size - compare chips, marks and broams. Does one broam hold the same amount as 20 chips? Ex4. Type - compare chips of each type of sphere. Are they equal? Is one type stronger? Does each have it's own strength? Are you going to break the economy by only ever using diamonds thereby increasing their value? Ex5. Surface Area - does a 1rkg ball fall off faster than a 1rkg cube? Ex6. SquareCube Law? - Do 2 chipsworth hold a 2rkg weight for the same length of time as 1 chipsworth holds 1rkg? Do 2 chipsworth hold 1rkg for twice as long as 1 chipsworth does? Is Syl messing with the experiments for fun when you aren't paying attention? Probably all very boring but that's research for you. Get on with it Sig.

Whew! From the thread title I thought you were going to reveal that there would be no more preview chapters until WoR is actually out. Now That would have been bad news.

Words of Radiance, 600 pages??? why why why
ChocolateRob replied to hbenhansen's topic in Introduce Yourself!
Blame Amazon. They're the ones claiming it as only 600 pages. I was disappointed too but also a bit suspicious. Then later I saw the size of the manuscript on tor.com- 23 replies

Ah but would it have to be a new guy? The ship's captain worked with her father, her father worked with the ghostbloods, the ship was 'luckily' still in the port after she missed her escape window, the broken latch is on the captain's room.

Excerpt from Words of Radiance: Chapters Six, Eight, and Nine
ChocolateRob replied to kobain's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well I put in the comments to the last set of chapters that it was probably Dalinar that wrote the message but everyone was all 'Nah! Parshmen, maybe spren'. Well even Dalinar thinks he did it. Mwa ha ha haaa!!!... ... er, ahem. So who else is hoping that Yalb is becoming a permanent sub-character, the only one Shallan has picked up so far is Jasnah and she doesn't count. Kaladin has his squad and Dalinar has all the highprinces. Dalinar, if you're going to send for Navani to come all the way to you (she's already complained about the distance) for every random letter that you need read you're gonna end up sleeping on the couch. Kaladin, the men need to see you fight if you want to inspire them. Teft can train them and even lead them but it's you that they need to believe in. Adolin, speak up man, you just got engaged, let's hear your thoughts. Express yourself! (to us). Edit Ooh, before I forget. With the news that you can Will a Shardblade back to your hand even from the physical realm does that mean you can use it like a Keyblade's Strike Raid and hurl it at your enemies? it won't fly back to your hand and you'll be without it completely for a while but just imagine the extra fun. hmm I wonder if a keyblade would unlock shardplate and make a piece fall off with every strike... OK getting off track now. -
My cousin Saskia was staying over when she finished HoA. It was around 2 in the morning when she let out a "You B**st**d!" at me. She was apparently a bit annoyed that I hadn't told her about the two characters found in the field of flowers. To be honest I can't remember hearing it myself, she may have inadvertently yelled it at someone else who got up to use the bathroom.' but who is thinking clearly that time in the morning? Well I guess the ending definitely surprised her.
