Yes. Straw's correct. Secrets must be approved by a committee member; just PM all of us and we'll decide who won't be there. (At the very least, one of the mods will be IMing, so that's one guaranteed non-player.)

Game Master Signups and Discussion Thread Welcome to the GM Thread! This is Sanderson Elimination’s go-to place for GM discussion, which includes signing up to run games and figuring out which games are going to run next. Signing Up & Getting Approval Signing up to run a game is super easy. Just post here in this thread! Let us know what game format you would like to run and anything else you’d like to share about the game - setting, rules, etc. It doesn’t matter how much experience you have: feel free to sign up even if you’ve never run a game, but want to try it out. To look at your place in line or what games are also on the list, take a look at the SE Games: GM Signup List. If you need help building your game, feel free to post in the Art of Game Creation Thread or PM the Game Balance Committee members: @Amanuensis, @STINK, @Sart, @Straw, @Archer, @The Unknown Order, @DrakeMarshall and @Kasimir. The committee is there to give advice on games and also to approve games to run - this is mostly just to reduce the number of broken games. If you're planning on running a game, your game must be approved by at least two mods or committee members. You can ask for said approval in this thread or Game Creation by @'ing the mods & committee, or send them a group PM. (If your game has secrets, please take the latter option and we'll decide among us who can check over them.) If you have questions about how game balance works, @Elbereth has written A Practical Guide to GMing that should help you on that front. Game Schedules SE games run on two different schedules: Long Games run back to back and Mid-Ranges and Quick Fixes switch off. We try not to have two games in signups at the same time. Discussion about which game will run next will happen here. If you are at the top of the list to GM a game but you’re busy, that’s fine! Just let us know, and we’ll skip over you to someone further down the list. You will not lose your place on the list. Getting to the top of the GM list merely means that you have first choice on when you run your game. If you’re going to be busy for a while, let us know roughly how long and we’ll mark that on the list. You still won’t lose your place, but we’ll know to automatically skip over you when looking for GMs for the next game. Anonymous Games As part of the games, we have 30 SE accounts we use to run games where the players are anonymous. There are at most 4 anonymous games per year, with a maximum of 30 players in each game. While all of the accounts have the names of animals, these names can be adjusted temporarily for a game. For example, in LG49, the accounts each had names of different characters in the prologues for the Stormlight Archives series. If you would like to run an Anonymous Game, you need to have played at least 10 SE games and GMed at least 4 (co-GMing does count for this). You will need to be signed up on both the anonymous games list and the list of the format you wish to run, so if you want to run an anonymous Long Game, you need to be on the Long Game list and the anonymous games list. We cannot run two anonymous games at the same time. Non-Sanderson Settings To keep the games centered around Brandon Sanderson and his settings (including Wheel of Time), we’ve made it so you need a pass to run a game in a non-Sanderson setting. These passes are handed out in the Anniversary Games at the beginning of each year. You can find past winners in the GM Signup List spreadsheet linked above, under the tab “Winners”. If you would like to run a non-Sanderson setting, contact one of the past winners or try to win a pass yourself during the next Anniversary Game! Spoiler Policy The spoiler policy for SE games is the same as the site spoiler policy. This means that in the wake of a new publication, we cannot run games using spoilers from the new work, with a slight caveat. Just like you can discuss spoilers in the relevant threads on the forum, we can run games that contain spoilers within the spoiler period. To do so, the game needs to be approved to run, and when the signup thread gets posted, the GM needs to mark very clearly at the top of the signup thread that the game contains spoilers. Place a spoiler warning at the top of any and all writeup threads that contain spoilers as well. This will prevent any players from signing up who do not wish to be spoiled and also from spectators reading a spoiler-y writeup, not realizing the game contains spoilers. Running a Game If you are a new GM, this section will provide some good advice before running your first game (or if you’re looking for a refresher). Rules & Etiquette Treat both teams fairly. This might seem like common sense, but it’s easy for a GM to start favoring the underdog and making decisions that help that team. Let your game progress naturally. Don’t out players or make the game difficult for one of the teams. You need to be as impartial as possible. Don’t get power-happy. In a way, the GM’s word is god in their own game. Don’t abuse this to make players play the way you want them to play. Your role isn’t to guide them as much as it is to provide structure for them in which to play. All games have an Impartial Moderator (IM) assigned to it. This moderator is one of the SE Moderators (current moderators are @little wilson, @Elbereth, @|TJ|, @A Jo in the Bush and @Araris Valerian). If you realize there’s a problem with a game mechanic and you’re thinking about changing something, talk to the Impartial Moderator (IM) and work out the solution with them. IMs are there to help you and make sure the game runs smoothly. They can intervene in player arguments if necessary or provide advice about player distribution when a GM wants a second set of eyes on role distribution before finalizing the start of a game. The IM is not there to help you run the game - their purpose is to provide impartial help when needed. Please use them. OP Rules and Standards There are a few basic standards for the OP of each game. Title Formatting All titles should be formatted in a similar fashion, dependent on which format you are running. This is to make it as clear as possible what game is being run, and to make past games easily findable while scrolling through the forum. Long Game __: [Title of Your Game Here] Mid-Range Game __: [Title of Your Game Here] Quick Fix Game __: [Title of Your Game Here] If you are running an anonymous game, the title should be [Format] __/Anonymous Game __: [Title] where the former blank is the number in that format, and the latter blank is the next anonymous game number. For writeup threads that will be merged into the main thread, you can use shorthand for the game formats (ie, LG, MR, QF). Please do not use item prefixes for your threads. OP Sections Rules and/or a link to the rules If you include a link to the rules, please at least put a condensed version of the rules in the thread. If some of your game rules differ from the standard game rules, please be explicit so players understand the differences. If a game has secrets or is a full or partial blackout game, the Rules section just needs to mention that. Quicklinks Put a section for quicklinks at the bottom of the post. Quicklinks are links to each turn of the game, linked to the writeup post for that turn, which a mod will add progressively through the game along with merging turns into the OP. Player List Have a list of all the players signed up for the game. This can be spoilered so it doesn’t take up space. Miscellaneous Things to Include Who are the GMs? Who is the IM? When is rollover? What is the inactivity filter? All QF’s must have an inactivity filter (a way to kill off inactives in the game). Inactivity filters in other formats are per GM’s discretion. Please include the game name or format and number in all doc titles (ie, Long Game 1: Spiked Doc, etc).

Anniversary Game 7/Anonymous Game 9: From Embers, A Flame
Elbereth replied to Elbereth's topic in Sanderson Elimination
SPOILER WARNING: This game contains mild, non-plot relevant spoilers for the epigraphs of Rhythm of War, part 2. Namely, at least one new Shard is revealed in these epigraphs. By reading the full rules and/or signing up for this game, you are acknowledging that you are okay having the Shard name(s) revealed. The summarized rules below do not include the names of the new Shard(s). There will be NO plot-relevant spoilers for Rhythm of War in this game. We are also including two Shards that are not confirmed but have past Word of Brandon’s regarding their intent. Those two Shards are Prudence (the wisdom shard) and Survival. Because this game is an anonymous game, signups will be in PM or DM to El or Wilson. DO NOT SIGN UP IN THIS THREAD. Please include your cosmetic role and character name if you’ve decided on them. Here’s the Google Doc with the full ruleset. The ruleset below does not contain the actions for the Shards or splinters, so you will need to read through the full ruleset to find that information. Win conditions Village - kill Odium and his Champions. Odium/Odium’s Champions - kill or outnumber the village. Autonomy - create an aspect of themselves on each current Shardworld and use each aspects’ ability at least once. Autonomy must also target at least 2 players on both teams (village and Odium’s Champions) with their aspects. Survival - survive until the end of the game, and have a final vote on at least 2 players on both teams. [Redacted New Shard] - create at least one of each possible item type and invest in at least 2 players on both teams. General Rules Shards and Splinters Refer to the full rules. Anniversary Game 7/Anonymous Game 9: From Embers, A Flame Welcome to Anniversary Game 7/Anonymous Game 9! Happy Holidays and a hearty congratulations to all of SE for surviving another year of bloodshed. As if 2020 didn’t have enough death already, we just had to add more! We’re just overachievers. Before discussing the game itself, we have a few important announcements to make. First, just like the last couple years, we’re once again making changes to the moderating team. @Fifth Scholar is stepping down, retiring to the game balancing committee. Fifth, you’ve been a great help the last few years on the team, and I’m sad to see you leave the team, but I absolutely understand life just getting too busy. I’m glad we’re not losing you completely and I know you’ll be a great addition to the committee. While replacing Fifth, we’ve decided to expand the moderating team from 4 to 5, and are promoting @Elandera and @Araris Valerian. I’m confident both of them will be excellent additions to the team, given their years of experience in the games, level-headedness, and impartiality. I’m quite looking forward to working with them both. Next, we’re making some changes to the game balancing committee. On top of Fifth joining the team, we’re also adding @Straw, @Haelbarde, and @Young Bard to their number. The full committee is now Amanuensis, Stink, Sart, Fifth, Straw, Haelbarde, and Young Bard. Moving past the moderators and committee, we’re rolling out a few other changes. The biggest change on this list is the pinned threads. For a few years now, the SE General Rules and Etiquette thread has been in desperate need of a revamp. We’ve finally completed that. This includes a couple substantive changes (detailed below), but is more focused towards making the rules more beginner-friendly. I would recommend everyone re-read the General Rules, especially if it’s been a while since you last re-read them. Just in case some of you don’t, there are two big rules changes in the general rules. First, eliminators can no longer copy and paste player PMs into the eliminator doc. This standardizes the copy-paste rule across the board, which is in place not only for proving-truth reasons, but also because players other than the intended recipient of a PM shouldn’t be able to analyze its language. The second big rule change is that ciphers are no longer allowed, as they’re a way of circumventing GM-intended limited PMs and the previous rule was more confusing than helpful. Along with the rules revamp, we will be unpinning the meta discussion thread since most of this type of discussion now happens on the SE Discord server. We will not be hiding this thread, so you’re welcome to continue using the thread if you’d like. A new pinned thread will be taking the place of that thread- the GM Signups and Discussions thread. We’ve long had the GM stuff take place in a PM, but this discussion makes more sense to be on the subforum, in its own thread. This will allow prospective GMs to sign up for a game directly in the thread, merely by posting there, rather than needing to be added to a massive PM. We’ve also had a number of discussions about the term “lynch”, and have decided that, given that word’s racial connotations, it would be good to perhaps use a different word. This is not a rule, nor will it be enforced in any way, but we do recommend that you change to something else, and we as a moderating team will endeavor to avoid the term. We’re still tossing around ideas for this term. Some ideas we’ve discussed have been remove, expel, and execute. If you have other good ideas, we can talk about that and try to come to a consensus. For the duration of AG7, we will be using ‘removal’ as the replacement term. At some point in 2021, we’re planning to roll out Break Tank games, which will be a shorter format of SE games that are not played to completion. These games are only to test new mechanics that are likely broken, to see where the breaks are and how to fix them. We’re still figuring out the exact form and rules of these games, and input is appreciated in our Discord server or in a PM to the moderators. I believe that’s all for announcements and changes. Let’s move on to anniversary game-relevant stuff. As per usual for the Anniversary Games, we will be handing out 3 non-Sanderson passes at the end of this game. These passes will be given to the three players who get the most votes for Best Cosmetic Role Roleplaying. These passes can be used to approve a non-Sanderson setting for a future game and the winners of each pass will get to award them to a game of their choice. Cosmetic roles are player-chosen roles that can develop a character for RP. They do not affect your role in the game or the actions you can do. In the next post, with the rules, we have a list with descriptions for some general cosmetic roles, but if you’d like something cosmere-specific, there are a few examples at the bottom of the list from Scadrial and Roshar. You are also welcome to create your own cosmetic role and/or browse past AGs for roles not included below. We recommend that everyone has a cosmetic role, but it’s not a requirement. If you know for sure what cosmetic role you would like to use for the game, you can mention it when you PM Wilson and myself, but this is not required to sign up. If you do not mention it in your signup PM, please note your cosmetic role in your first post of the game. That concludes this first post of the anniversary game. Continue reading for the rules and how to sign up. (Do not sign up in this thread.) Player List Quick Links

Quick Fix 46: Mysteries within Secrets
Elbereth replied to Elbereth's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Fixed well before you posted. I don't have very many thoughts on the game, I think, so I'll just get them out now (they're a bit unorganized, but whatever): I have no idea how balanced this game was. As several people have mentioned, the fact that it came down to three people is a good sign. To an extent, so is the fact that so many of the ties were important to the point of changing the gamestate - if they'd gone the other way any one of those times, the game could've been very different! I think the JP may have had a mild advantage (Illwei surviving two ties made it harder for them and they still won), and the Korathi a mild disadvantage - I failed to account for how well the Jeskeri would manipulate the main lynch and make it very hard for the Korathi to actually find and kill the people they wanted to, plus it was already difficult to tell between suspicious JP and suspicious Cultist activity. To be honest, I'm not sure how I'd have changed the numbers this game - ideally, I'd have just added a couple more players and had them be Korathi. I would also consider perhaps making the ties ala Joe's, i.e. all players in the tie die. I did consider giving the Jeskeri doc the ability to lynch anyone rather than just those in the doc. I wouldn't do so with this kind of distribution, as that'd just disadvantage the Korathi more and help out the JP. I also considered making win conditions mutually exclusive; I'm reasonably satisfied that not doing that was a fine choice. I'd love to hear from people in the Jeskeri doc what their thoughts on the voting style were - would it have been better to be explicit in-doc-at-the-time votes? No reveal of who voted on whom at all? I think it's interesting that the Cultist numbers were so predictable that the JP could be fairly confident when they'd found the last one in the doc. If I were to run this again, I might consider just making it a completely open setup ala MU, in which the exact distribution between alignments is publicly known. Or maybe not, I don't know. One last thing I'm curious about is PMs. PMs being closed would have made this a vastly different game, I think, and still an interesting one (though a bit sad for the Korathi) - I think if that particular change were made, I'd take out the Korathi Cultist. (Idea that I haven't fully thought through at all: what if the Jeskeri knew each others' identities but had no doc to discuss and had to rely as much on the main thread as the Korathi? What if they had no doc but could PM - but only one-on-one? I don't know!) Overall, I think this was a success, and it definitely deserves a rerun. I'd consider running it as a QF again, but I'd also like to see what would happen if I put it in a MR and added in a few simple roles to make things more interesting. So be on the look out for that, and thanks for such a fascinating game! -
Quick Fix 46: Mysteries within Secrets

Mancia stood before the door, alone, in the dim light of pre-dawn twilight. "I am faithful," she said solemnly. "The unfaithful are dead." Silence. She frowned. "Didn't you hear me? All the unfaithful are dead, I'm the only one alive, let me in!" The door stared back at her, still and silent. "Come on!" She banged on the door with the hilt of her knife, still wet with fresh blood. "Let me in!" She tried everything: prying the door open, cutting around the edges, trying to feel at and destroy the hinges... nothing worked. The door remained stubbornly closed. The sun rose to see a girl in tattered clothing, a knife by her side caked in dried blood, sitting against the great door to the temple. She looked exhausted, with dark bags under her eyes speaking of many sleepless nights. Scattered around the temple were bodies in various states of death and decay, their rotten stench filling the air for miles around. Vultures circled above the scene, spiraling slowly down towards the corpses. (Some eyed the girl, too, for she looked weak enough to be easy prey.) She ought to leave, Mancia knew. The door would not open, and there was nothing left here but death. But somehow, she couldn't quite muster up the strength to stagger back into the forest - let alone to go home, merciful Domi, what would she say? How could she go back to a normal life after this? And so she sat at the door, stuck in the lure of the temple. For what no one had noticed was how easy it had been to find this temple, for all the rumors of it being so ancient no one was sure it existed. No one noticed how even when the bloodshed started, not a single person ran, no one even thought to flee into the forest and the relative safety there. The temple would not open in the presence of the unfaithful, they knew that much. But nor would the unfaithful be allowed to leave and divulge the secret of this place. Its makers had made sure of it. So they killed each other, and died, and only Mancia was left. For now. Illwei died to the Korathi Inquisition and was a Cultist. Mist was Cultist-killed and was a Jeskeri Practitioner. The Korathi and the Jeskeri Practitioners have won! Well done, everyone! Post mortem will be up soon enough, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, too! From y'all's perspectives, how balanced did the game feel? Was it fun to play? Would you make any changes to it? QF46 (Cycle 2): The Unfaithful Shall Die It was only a short trek to the door inside the temple from the outside. They'd cleared out all the traps, so they could come back out whenever they liked, though a number of the group stayed near the door examining it. Some were trying to study it, some wanted to know if it could be broken, and some just didn't want to miss if it opened. So there was some traffic between the door and the outside. But not a lot - not enough. So it was at least an hour after he'd died that they found Shao, a curved knife sticking out of his chest, lying at the entrance to the temple with his arms laid on his stomach. His face looked almost peaceful, but not quite - as if someone had tried to move his shape into that expression after he died and hadn't quite gotten it right. That was the first death. Straw was Cultist-killed! He was Korathi. Mint died to the Korathi & co Inquisition! She was Korathi. Lotus died to the Jeskeri Inquisition! They were a Jeskeri Practitioner. QF46 (Cycle 1): If All Ye Be Faithful From the writings of Janesh the explorer: ....We've just reached a door which seems to be locked with some sort of magic. One of the others translated the words on it - apparently it says something along the lines of 'I will open, if all ye be faithful'. So now everyone's arguing about what religion the ancient people who made this followed. And no one will step forward and claim to be anything but Korathi. What a mess. Me, I think the answer is pretty clear. The only true faith is ours. But I can't say that, they'd turn on me immediately. We'll just have to do it the old-fashioned way. And our sacrifices will prove our devotion, and once all of them are gone the door will open. Besides, this way I can finally get rid of that old Father Dedan and his irritating nonsense. ~~~ QF46 has begun! PMs are open, and must include me (but not Wilson). Remember that no copy-pasting from one location into any other is allowed. All PMs should be sent, let me know if you didn't get one! Also, please bold all votes, for my sanity. The cycle will end in 22 hours at 12pm Pacific time. (And future cycles will go up in a more timely fashion, hopefully. ) Happy hunting! Hello y'all! Sorry for the delayed start date - I couldn't quite manage to get everything set up in time. I'm working on the writeup and such now, and the game will start in 40 minutes, at 1pm Pacific time. Rollovers will start at 12pm Pacific (ie that's when the cycle will end), and new cycles will go up at 1pm. So, last chance to sign up! The Korathi Cultist(s) have the Cultist doc but not the Jeskeri doc. Your second read was right. -

They cannot, and that's correct. (That is one of the things in the category of 'should this be changed? who knows???'. ) That's a large part of why the Korathi are limited to less than half of the team in total - that's essentially me explicitly saying that there will be at least one but not very many. I legitimately forgot you had to do that. This'll be fun. -

There are two inquisitions, which is just a flavor word for lynches. You can think of them as completely interchangeable. In normal SE terms, there's a lynch in the thread (the Korathi / public inquisition, which everyone gets to vote in just like normal) and then a secondary lynch in the Jeskeri doc (well, technically votes are sent to me in PM, but the vote count is revealed in the Jeskeri doc and only people in there get to participate) - you could think of that as a votes-based kill if you like, since there's no effective difference in game, but given that the Jeskeri are not a unified group I think a lynch is the more appropriate framing. Does that help? -
There is a forest near Kaltii, just within Arelon above the Duladel border. That much is known to any school-child. Some people, perhaps, have even heard rumors about the forest and what lies within, for it is deep and dark and not often entered. But none knew about the place at the heart of the forest. No one had set sight there for centuries on the beautiful structure at its center. None who lived to tell the tale, at least. Not until now. Today we have found it. The pyramid at the center of the forest, built by some ancient civilization a very long time ago. We don't know what it's for, or who built it, or even what they worshiped. (I hope that it is a temple to Domi, myself, even though it looks like no temple I have ever seen.) But we know that it is beautiful, and that we have much more yet to learn. Tomorrow we will enter the pyramid at first light, and endeavor to learn more of this ancient people and their ways. The younger ones are spinning tales of traps and curses, horror stories of old kings' graves, but I am not worried. Merciful Domi will guide our way. - from the diary of Father Dedan Quick Fix 46: Mysteries within Secrets is officially (finally) up for signups! Please sign up below with your name and character, or let me know if you'd prefer to spectate. @little wilson is the IM for this game, so please contact her if you have any issues. The game will start July 27th, specific time TBD but probably at least a few hours earlier than the time of this posting. The rules are here in pretty doc format, and listed below as well. Any clarifications (no matter where they're asked) will be added both here and to the doc (though I don't anticipate too many, given the simplicity of the rules). Note that this game will need a minimum of 20 players to run smoothly. I don't anticipate having fewer than that, but if it occurs I'll run something else. Please don't make me do that. (The flavor of the game will make a little more sense with the opening writeup of the game. If you want to RP pre-game, you can go in the ziggurat! You'll already be inside for the opening writeup.) Factions Korathi: You're certain in the faith of your fellow Korathi, but you suspect some Jeskeri hiding among you who may have weaker faith than you. Being Jeskeri isn't a problem, exactly, but lack of devotion most certainly is. Docs: None Win condition: You win when every Jeskeri Practitioner is dead. (This does not include Jeskeri Cultists.) Jeskeri Practitioner: You just want to survive and practice your religion, even if you have to hide it from the paranoid Korathi, but someone has been practicing the Mysteries again and desecrating this sacred place - not to mention terrifying the Korathi. You have to root them out, before it’s too late. You have access to the Jeskeri inquisition. Docs: Jeskeri doc Win condition: You win when every Jeskeri Cultist is dead. Jeskeri Cultist: You are tired of this hiding and tolerating and pretending to be other than who you are. The Mysteries are sacred and beautiful, and anyone who rejects them is unfaithful and must be sacrificed. You have a group kill each cycle. The last order sent in will be accepted. Docs: Jeskeri doc*, Cultist-only doc Win condition: You win when every non-Cultist is dead. *At least one Cultist will be hidden among the Korathi, and will not be known as Jeskeri nor have access to the Jeskeri doc. The Korathi Cultist(s) will make up less than half of the starting Cultist team. Jeskeri doc: Contains every Jeskeri Practitioner and Cultist (see exception just above). Non-anonymous; all names will be listed at the top and each player must choose a distinct color and keep to it. Editing others’ text is forbidden. Every player who has access to this doc also has access to the Jeskeri inquisition. They may submit a vote in their GM PM each cycle (votes declared in the doc but not PM will not count), and the highest-voted player will die at the end of the cycle just as in the standard inquisition. Votes will be revealed in the Jeskeri doc at the start of the next cycle. Housekeeping Rollover: 23 hour cycles with 1 hour for rollover, time TBD. Inquisitions: One vote minimum; tied inquisitions are decided randomly (in both cases). Inactivity filter: Two consecutive cycles of no posting in thread will result in death (unless forewarned). PMs: Open, one-on-one, must include the GM. Copy-pasting any PM or doc content into any other location is forbidden, including the Cultist doc. Writeup: Death types will be distinguished. If you take anything in the writeup to have any game-relevant information whatsoever, you are wrong. There are no secrets. All win conditions are game-ending. Player List Quicklinks
