Do Kharbranthians speak Alethi with an accent? Hesina doesn't have any accent that we've been told about.

This is how I think it works. There are some Shards that aren't capable of breaking any kind of promise, such as Honor. For the other Shards, there are certain things that they are bound by, and if they swear by those things, then they are bound by them. However, just "promising" something doesn't fall under that category, and most Shards would be able to break that sort of thing easily. So Odium saying, "I'll totally save your city. Promise!" really doesn't hold weight with me.

True, but I think the spren would be aware of it if there were a perp in the Purelake?

I'm sorry, but since the beginning, you've been stating your opinion as fact. You have always been welcome to your opinion, but you've stated it definitively as "this is what that means, there's no other possible interpretation." You've been using the WoBs you have to tell people that Brandon told you Dalinar will die and that he will have no role in later books. This entire thread has been trying to show you that your interpretation is just that, your interpretation, and that you've been putting way more into those WoBs than Brandon put there. Your interpretation may be right, it may be wrong. But it's yours, not everyone else's, and definitely not what Brandon said or intended.
-
And that doesn't scream confirmation bias to you? Just a little?
-
I'm sorry, but Brandon doesn't say, "that's it." He says he's not willing to comment on anyone's role past book 5. He's never said whether Kaladin, Shallan, Venli, Renarin, or any of the others survive or have living roles. The Lift one I can see him backtracking on that a little, but she's the only one that's even tenuously confirmed to survive. He also doesn't say a little role. Just a smaller one than his book. Since none of the others are his book, this makes sense, and doesn't really mean very much. He's been just as close mouthed about whether Kaladin or Shallan or Jasnah or any of the others will survive. I'm willing to bet you anything you want that if someone asks him about Kaladin's role in future books, or Shallan's, he's going to answer almost exactly the same. False hope can be terrible, but so can false....anti-hope? Extreme Pessimism? Neither one is healthy. But in this case, I really think you are reading far more into this than is being put there. You're welcome to your interpretation, of course, but I just don't think that there's anything close to confirmation on your viewpoint.

I think they all technically get access to both surges right away. The only real exception to this that we've seen is the Skybreakers, and I believe that's because of how strictly structured they are. Like, Szeth could use Division right away (he was a Squire first, we don't see any limitations on Squires), but he's told not to because that's not how they train their recruits. Kaladin: Definitely used Gravitation and Adhesion from the beginning. Shallan: Definitely used Transformation and Illumination since the beginning. Lift: Definitely used Progression and Abrasion from the beginning. Jasnah: Hard to say whether her initial encounter with Ivory involved Transportation or Transformation, and we don't really see her progress, so we don't have enough evidence there. Renarin: Definitely used Progression since the beginning. If his visions are his version of Illumination, then he's used that since the beginning too (The countdown that started early in WoR).

Indeed. I mean, Tanavast is dead, and Honor's power is Splintered, but Honor's power is still very much around and kicking.
-
I mean, I'm sorry, but Brandon himself says that you're reading more into what he said than what he meant?
-
They can be a singular person when you don't want to use a specific gender pronoun. Like, The Sibling is referred to as They, even though they're a singular entity. Also, he never says any specific person *will* die. Just that anyone *could*.
-
That first interview is from 2010, almost 10 years ago. A lot has changed since then, so if you could get an update whether that's still the plan, that'd be a good idea. In addition, Kaladin being *important* in the second half doesn't mean that he'll be *alive* in the second half. An Order of Windrunners dedicated to his memory would count just as much. I'm sorry, but is not what Brandon said. He said, specifically, book 4 will be much smaller and book 5 will be greater than 4 but less than 3. Since this fits with the word count of the other characters, I really have to disagree on your interpretation. In Brandon's follow up that you linked in the first thread: He says specifically that your interpretation isn't what he meant. And that specifically *any* of the current characters could still live or die. I truly do understand your fear for Dalinar. I do share in it to a smaller degree. But we really really don't have any proof at all that Dalinar is going to have a minor, reduced, or limited role in the series, first or second part. I'm not trying to be disagreeable, I hope you understand that. I'm hoping that I can give you some hope for your favorite character and his continued importance to the series. Edit: Ninja'd by Chaos!

Just a reminder that we pretty much only see Jasnah through other people's point of view, predominantly Shallan's, and Shallan is very much not an objective observer. We only see what Shallan perceives of Jasnah. However, given what we do get from Jasnah's PoV, I would say that she is very much capable of empathy and compassion.

The end of the Hierocracy was about 500 years ago. The coppermind covers it as well as the dating system: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Roshar#Calendar

Still better than mandra's. That's because you can't lie in mathematics! (Well you can, but it's very very bad)

I think you should stop pluralizing words using 's instead of just s. (just giving you a hard time based on the edit reason you put). I really don't think that Cryptics are inside of, bound to, or related to the soulcaster fabrials. I think they're going to be more like the Oathgates--spren that were specially made to get the fabrial to work, and are attracted when someone is using the soulcaster. The Kaza interlude where she feels a helping hand, for instance. In addition, Cryptics are spren representing the underlying mathematics of the universe, not necessarily "Truths". Like, Pattern's real name is a mathematical equation (or the results of the equation).

You can interpret it that way if you want, but that's not what Brandon says. Venli+Eshonai, if you insist. The point is that that narrative is going to take up most of the book, and given that they only have a very tenuous relationship with any of the big three, it makes sense that they'll be in less of the book. Listen, I love Dalinar too. He's my favorite character in the series. I just really really think that you're misinterpreting what Brandon's saying. He flat out told you Dalinar's going to have some of the most powerful scenes in the entire series, aka all ten books from your viewpoint. What more can be asked?
-
I mean, I get that you're worried about Dalinar. I understand. But I think you're reading more pessimism into what Brandon's saying than he's actually putting there.
-
Dalinar got 87/30 in the not-his books. Not just 30k. Kaladin had 120/74. Shallan had 100/60. The difference in WoR is substantial, but no where does Brandon say he's going to get as few words as he did in WoR, only that he'll get less than in OB. Which again, matches what happened with everyone else.
-
So I agree with the other posters that this isn't as pessimistic as you're seeing it. The person whose focal book it is has always been the book that person gets the most number of words. So it's perfectly sensical that Dalinar won't get as many words again as he did in OB. Kaladin has only had the most word count in his book, Shallan has only had the most word count in her book. In Kaladin's book, Dalinar had more words than Shallan. In Shallan's book, Kaladin had more words than Dalinar. In book 4, Eshonai is probably going to get the most words, followed by Kaladin, Shallan, and Dalinar (probably not in that order. Ditto with book 5 for Szeth. A different character that isn't the top three getting the most words in a book means the main three will get less. The point is, we know absolutely nothing about the back five, about who's going to survive and who isn't. The only thing we know is who the flashback characters are, and that doesn't even guarantee that those characters will be alive. Also, Brandon says right in that message, that he loves Dalinar, and that Dalinar will have some of the most powerful scenes in the series. That's not something you do for a minor character. Whatever Dalinar's future is going to be, it's absolutely not going to be irrelevant or small or petty.

If Hoid could have chosen the recipient of Honor's visions, would it have been himself?
RShara replied to rkae610's question in Cosmere Q&A
Well introducing a 4th Shard into the mix, more than halfway through the first series, that isn't really foreshadowed, seems like it's really bad writing. Almost Deus Ex Machina, like. Either way, that's not relevant to the topic at hand, so we should probably stop derailing- 13 replies
