The Good News Thread: I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!
Quiver replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
I wouldn't object to hearing more roleplaying stories. Or you starting a thread and posting stuff there to share with everyone. HINT. HINT. -
Name 15 webcomics. (This may or may not be an attempt for me to find new reading material )

So... the past few days, I've been doing a day shift at work. That's shift starts at 6am, so I tend to sleep poorly; I keep thinking I'll sleep in, run late, and so forth. Tonight is a night shift, so you'd think that I'd finally get a restful night, right? ...OR. Maybe I'll end up having a nightmare where I not only sleep in, I fall asleep at work and through my entire shift. YES, THANK YOU BRAIN, I'LL HAVE OPTION B.

Not gonna lie, I misread your name as Tai, so that's probably gonna stick for me More seriously, welcome! I'm rather personally attached to Warbreaker (as I think you know), so I'm always happy to see more Nalthian fans running around! #WarbreakerIsBestCosmere

I am really, really bad at spelling and grammar, and I really probably should have re-read some of the books first... But... thanks to the above guys for commenting, for the people who helped me proof read this, and for all the upvotes! Because, uh.. wow. Wasn't expecting that many upvotes for things. Thanks!

I should have replied to this I think FMA shows one of the major strengths manga and anime storytelling has; that is, they tend to tell a complete story from beginning to end under a single creator. You get shonen stuff like Dragonball or Bleach which can veer wildly between individual arcs... But on the other hand, you have the likes of Fullmetal Alchemist, which tells a complete story as the creator intended, making it significantly more consistent in terms of themes, character portrayals, etc. (Double so in the case of FMA; from what I understand, Arakawa had the idea for the ending first of all, and then she worked backwards from there. So, unlike the likes of -say- Marvel or DC comics, Fullmetal is more like an indie work, something where the creator had full creative control, could tell the story they wanted and ended it on their own terms.)

That's fair. I mostly enjoy Attack on Titan for the more action-based stuff anyway. There aren't any characters I connected to emotionally the way I did to Ed, Al, Roy or the rest of the Fullmetal cast ANYWAY. Cutting this long story short, everyone should watch Fullmetal Alchemist. Or, heck, open an FMA Rewatch thread here on the Shard and get people to do it that way. Because Fullmetal Alchemist is great.

Rysn is one of my favorite characters in the Stormlight Archive, so honestly, this confirmation is all I need
-
I prefer Fullmetal, sure, but... like I said, wondering if it's being shaped up as a similar cultural touchstone What @Jedal said. Brotherhood is a great anime, and it's conveniently all on Netflix
-
Eh. I still like some stuff about the original; it has a very different tone from the manga/Brotherhood, so... (Funnily enough, I was thinking about this the other day. I kind of wonder if Attack on Titan is shaping up to be "this" generations FMA. Both series are darker-than-average shonen, dealing with body horror, mental trauma, conspiracy and whose protagonists are locked on metaphysical and literal journey's of discovery) ... Then again, my criteria might just be too broad

Cool anime and manga series. Two brothers set out on a quest to find the Philosophers Stone after a disastrous attempt at magic leaves their bodies damaged.

Hah, I hid my post because I was concerned it was too spoilery, guess you got there faster than I did Anyhow, yeah, the manga and Brotherhood tell a complete story. There is ONE small chapter they leave out, but it becomes a brick joke later on, so. That's fine DELIGHTFUL, DON'T READ THIS.
-
DELIGHTFUL HAS READ AND/OR SEEN FMA. I AM GOING TO SPAM YOU WITH FULLMETAL MEMES SO MUCH.

Honestly - and I think this says more about me than it does anything else - I think I would like to hear a panel about literary themes and broader social criticism of Brandon's works, rather than exclusively world-building stuff. Explain what it is about Brandon's writings that resonate with people, what kind of impact they can have, what he means as a force within fantasy as a genre... (Also the fact that the Cosmere is basically novel!MCU.) ...if you want an entirely in-universe thing, about the entire Cosmere? I guess a crash course on the background plot line of the series isn't a bad idea. You wouldn't need to give spoilers for it all, but you could frame it in such a way that means that people who go from the panel and start reading the books can see the easter eggs and how all the pieces fit together.

Which Sanderson character is it?

Prof. As I recall/insinuated from the text, Marsh was possessed by Ruin for most of book two; he only started being active as an [iantagonist[/i] at the end of it. Whereas Prof was a good guy and struggling to remain in control for the entirety of the middle Reckoners book and only succumbed in the finale. -
I, unfortunately, still haven't experienced anything other than the original anime first hand Never finished reading Fate/Zero, and never got around to playing the Visual Novel.. Really started wanting to play it recently though
-
True. And it's not like Fate/Zero Lancer got much of abatter deal. All those guys want to do is have a fair fight, and they keep running into political intruges and not being able to do their thing. Lancer is suffering.
-
I find it so amusing that, among all the other creative choices it made, Fate/Stay Night decided to tone down Cú Chulainn. Everyone else get's anime level upgrades, and he never even gets to warp spasm once. Poor Lancer.

Vin. I've said this often enough that it's probably a familiar refrain to people of this forum by now... but I relate very well to Vin's thought processes and her anxiety, especially in the first book. I happened to read Mistborn around the time that my own anxiety was starting to get to be too much, so seeing a character who I could relate to dealing with the same problems really helped. And I especially like the fact that Brandon didn't make Vin "get over it". She gets better, without getting better, which I found to be pretty damnation inspiring. I read that as, basically, being told that it's okay to have fears and worries and concerns. That just because these are things that are part of you, that you might not be able to get rid of, that doens't mean you can't live a full life and that you can't manage and control your fears. I love Vin as a character.
-
Oh, I've heard about that. So, it's worth tracking down then? Last really good anime film I watched was Wolf Children.

... to be fair though, "half the information is missing and the rest is inaccurate" kind of describes the internet

Man, I would love if a 16th century monk ended up in our world and got all snooty about encylopedias as an inferior learning tool than illustrated manuscripts
