  1. Oh man! I remember when I was a kid, a tutor of mine owned some of those on VHS; I got a loan of them, since I'd read the books around then... I got a loan of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian and Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Maybe it's nostalgia or whatever, but I remember really liking them. By contrast, I've only ever seen the first of the "Narnia Trilogy" films, and... Again, it's just one of those films I don't remember much about, but I remember not really liking it.
  2. Sure, as the pony guy. Anyway, off the topic of my ego boosting... Since I won't be online on the 30th, I may as well just give details on said prompt now. >Ahem< December Writing Prompt: Happy Holidays! Write a story against a backdrop of a fictional or non-fictional holiday/celebration. So... you can use Christmas if you want. Or Hannukah. Or celebrating First Contact, the Rosharan Weeping, Heartswarming Eve... basically whatever you want, so long as a holiday is involved somehow.
  3. I know I saw the Eragn film, but all I can remember is that there were a lot of changes, and that Saphira looked odd. The latter I can't really blame the movie for- I [think she had feathers in the book? Maybe? I never finished that series- and I remember walking out of it thinking the film was bad... but I honestly can't remember what, exactly, bothered me. Anyway, to repeat the trend- I think the Lord of the Rings was a great trilogy, though I also think that the Two Towers and the Return of the King weren't as good as Fellowship; of course, Fellowship was what introduced me to fantasy, and I think the Extended Cuts of the latter films improve them vastly. I honestly can't watch the Directors Cuts of those two anymore, because the pieces they removed, like Brego or Saruman, stand out too much to me. I think public domain characters, like Sherlock Holmes or Dracula, or comic books are interesting to adapt, since... a lot of adaptions take so many liberties with the characters... but that also means I'm not sure if they should "count" for good adaptions. RDJ's Sherlock Holmes was a fantastic movie, but it's also an original story, and doesn't adapt things so much as take them and twist them as it wants to. A Game of Shadows is awful though. Moriarty was fantastic, but the rest of it... ouch.
  4. ...Wow. I feel old now. Awesome movies though; I consider them more or less the Star Wars of that generation. I'm a little less... "eager" about the Hobbit films, but then, I think they seem less like three distinct films and more like one SUPER long film in three parts. I'm really hoping Five Armies nails the landing. ...And speaking of the Hobbit, I'm going to say that I love Bilbo Baggins.
  5. Guess the Church of the Stick isn't the only religious group in this sub-forum. If we don't have to cover up the cult-like status of these social groups anymore, then...
  6. ...Well. I have a new headcanon on where the Royal Canterlot Voice comes from.
  7. By non-fancy dress, I'm guessing you mean her armor? Though, in all fairness, I can't hate on her blue dress that much, since the scene in Two Towers where she stands at the hall and the flag breaks off is one of my favourite moments in the trilogy. (And, in case you didn't know- totally unplanned! From how I understand it, the Rohan banner coming loose was an accident, and they decided to run with it, which is amazing.) Also, I want to add that, not only is Warbreaker my favorite Brandon book, Vivenna is my favorite character from it.
  8. To get back to the first post on this page, before I saw the Kingkiller comment, I thought you meant Denna from Sword of Truth. Anyhow... to repeat what I said nearly a year ago, Theon is my favorite character in ASoIaF; he's a terrible human being, but I find his story arc fascinating. Besides that... um... ...Wow. I haven't read very many books lately. Though for Lord of the Rings... I have a few characters I particularly like, though I will be predictable and say that Eowyn's scene at the Pelennor fields is one of my favorite in literature, and I suspect is a big reason why I want to love female protagonists, and often find them disappointing. Her reveal and showdown with the Witch King is a hard moment to top.
  9. Since when?! I guess since I'm starting this it would make sense to pick the first prompt... speaking of which, I'm thinking of leaving how detailed or vague such a thing is up to whoever happens to be providing it. For what it's worth, mine will probably be a very vague thing (like writign about a particular theme or something- or, more liekly, do something for the holidays), but it might be fun to give a very specific description and see how many different ways the people of the forum can interpret it.... As for when those terrible things can be expected... I like round numbers and such, so I'll try and get said prompt online on either the 30th or the 1st, and have December as the first run. Honestly though, I'm with Kasmir as far as the length thing is concerned. It's why I left it vague- I, quite frankly, have no idea how "long" the average short story (or even a chapter) is. I'm thinking of leaving that limil super vague, since it's not like this is a contest with a prize or anything; the point is just to try and encourage writing and creativity and stuff, so if you get one idea which you write 30K for because you really got into it... well, good for you! ...Of course, if you guys think we need a more hard deadline, say so. Heck, I suppose we could give whoever-is-prompting the option of nominating a word count as well.
  10. Actually, from Dalinar's perspective, I can totally see why Amaram would be the logical choice. First- he doesn't have ties to the Kholin family. He isn't one of Dalinar's vassals, and he isn't a blood-member of the family. It means that the Rdaiants look more like a neutral group, whereas making Renarin, Adolin, or any other member of his family would have opened him up to criticisms of nepotism from the others, the idea that he was using the Radiant-hood to solidify his own power... all of which would ultimately damage his cause. Second- not only is Amaram not one of Dalianr's servants, he's one of Sadeas. It's a show of unity, him saying "I don't care who you serve under, anyone can be a Radiant". Amarams status under Sadeas (ie, as a powerful commander) also helps neutralise any suspicion that the position is for a sycophant. Three- he's a lighteyes. And considering how unpopular the Radiants are, using a Lighteyes as a leader makes sense. It eases the practice into society, by using constructs they are already familiar with ie: Lighteyes are leaders and general. Four- Amaram had a stellar reputation. He really wasn't a noble (at least in the public eye) who could be said to have been bought, bribed, or otherwise manipulated into taking the position. He was the exemplar of what an Alethi Lighteyes was supposed to be; didn't Kaladin refer to him in pretty much those same terms during his flashbacks in Way Of Kings? Yeah, Amaram turned out to be a horrible choice, but... it's not exactly based on anything he could have known. Presumably, members of secret societies are rather good at covering their tracks, especially societies who want to restore the Vorin church to power.
  11. Probably; heck, the only bit of work I've posted here was an "original" world of mine. That was why I added the 'technically' side of it- mostly just to cover myself in case it turned out this sort of thing is what the Writing/Reading excuses sub-forums are for. Well duh you can use existing stuff for prompts. How else am I gonna turn the prompts into MLP fiction? Seriously, Edgedancer is right. I'm kind of working out the details of how all this would work... but if you want to take said-prompt and write a totally original piece, that's fine. If you want to take it and use it to write something in your pre-established world and setting and stuff- that's fine. If you want to take it and write something in someone elses world, like an AU where Kaladin is a Lighteyes instead of dark... that's fine. Basically, my thinking was... well, it's a prompt. You can write whatever you want about it, since... in my mind, this is like NaNo; it's to help encourage people to write. If that means you write fanfiction, original short stories, or stuff for your novel, that's up to you. It's a little more restrictive than NaNo, since there's a given theme for each month, but hey- no one said you had to do it every month.
  12. So... this is an idea that just occurred to me. It may be a bit similar to the writing excuses sub-forum (I think this part of the forum is, technically, supposed to be for "fandom" creative works?) but I figured I'd suggest it, and let mods move things around as necessary. So... there's a few people here who are doing NaNoWriMo this year. For those who don't know, NaNo amounts to "Write like crazy"- the idea is to try and write a short novel of 50,000 words in a month. Despite the fact that I never sem to get anywhere with it, it generally is a useful writing tool for people- after all, Brandon advertised it on his site this month. So... I was wondering; how would anyone here feel about having our own NaNo-style game here? What I have in mind is kind of simple; every month, someone (either get a forum "celebrity" like an admin or a particularly active user) to pick a theme for the month; everyone scrambles, writes up a short story (or a chapter) related to said theme, then submit and critique at the end of the month. April Prompt Provided by Delightful: Write a piece involving a sudden change in information and/or perspective, by the character, reader or both. Bonus points if the character comes to one realisation while the reader thinks something else entirely.
  13. Yeah, people on this forum have some crazy profile pictures. #ponies
  14. Random Start: The Magic Goes Away --> The Wheel of Time --> Brandon Sanderson That was an incredibly lucky random spin. Still, I'll take it.
  15. Hey Steel, guess who's getting banished to Braize for dashing my hopes? I even brought in an expert at it.
  16. I think it's just saying that they don't go outside as much anymore lol Bottom of the front page, just above the online users list; there's a link that lists a few things, including top 50 reputation. I know I'm a Sanderfan, because I'm on this site instead of working on my Nano piece. ...That may not be a good thing.
  17. Tien walks into a bar. He walks out of the bar because they don't sell drinks on the rocks. Oh, and because he's underage and dark eyes. I'm sure Roshar has strict drinking policies.
  18. "Jinkies," Velma said, holding the bead. "This is worth a fortune- but why wouldn't an allomancer burn it?" "Well gang, looks like we've got a mistery on our hands!" "A mystery?" Scrappy jumped. "Let me atium, let me atium!" Scooby-Doo and Mistborn. The crossover no one ever asked for.
  19. For half a second, I forgot this is 2014, and was horrified that not only was Brandon (by your calculations) only publishing one book next year, it was for the series I haven't read yet. I need sleep.
  20. Random thought that just occurred to me- and which I have no idea how to research. So... I thought I'd leave it here, then watch you guys poke holes in the theory with a stick. Could the gemhearts of smaller creatures be influenced by how often they beat? Smaller animals (I think) have hearts that beat more often per minute than larger ones do... if that's the case- and the beetle heart isn't just poetic licence (which I think it is, but I digress)- might smaller creatures gemhearts have developed in a way that lets them hold stormlight for longer?
  21. "Taln" being a kandra would be very... unexpected. Honestly, I can't see it happening. Kandra haven't been mentioned outside of Mistborn (and WoB), and having a major character be revealed as one doesn't seem to suit the easter-egg style of Brandon's cameo's
  22. Unmade are from the Stormlight Archive, though exactly what they are isn't clear. Dunno if you've read it, so...
  23. In the future, we would ask that if you're going to return products, you at least convert them into cupcakes first. In the name of harmony and friendship, etc, the Herd shall overlook Smurf's delicious murder, and offer him a high-rank in the government. Here's why you should accept our generous, non-mandatory offer.
  24. Oh! I can't believe I forgot to advertise this! A few years ago, DC made an animated Wonder Woman film. If anyone here hasn't seen it, I really, really recommend it... but with a caveat: DAMNATION is it violent. Now, I actually rather like that; the movie doesn't shy away from the fact that the Amazonian's are Warrior Women, or that a war-like culture is violent, and has violent consequences. I also feel it kind of works the way that war films often make the best anti-war films; it makes the moments of love, compassion and encouragement even better. Still, figure I ought to give that warning up front. Anyway... Matrim, I have no idea what's wrong, but I hope that it get's better, or that you feel better, and let me know if there's anythign I can do to help.
  25. Don't have my book, and the coppermind doesn't seem to have the information, but... I remember a heterochronatic characetr in one of Shallan's flashback chapters; I think he was the bastard son of a lighteyes noble, and basically acted as an investigator into Shallan's mothers death? Honestly, the first time I read that, it threw me, since... I didn't think having mismatched eyes was possible on Roshar (investiture and all that). It seemed like an odd addition... But if it's set up for Gaz, that would make sense. After all, we never did find out exactly what debts he had to pay back to his Lighteye superiors in Way of Kings, and just because one Light/Darkeye was treated fairly well doesn't mean others would be. Nice idea. Upvote.
