Quick Fix Game 4: Conversions
Metacognition replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
M didn't like to stay in one spot; too easy for people to find you if you did that. Didn't matter who it was; Parents, Police, Gang members, Friends... staying in one spot meant that eventually they'd find you and if they found you, then you'd be known. M didn't want to be known. Being known caused problems. He had learned that early in life. So, from a young age, he had kept moving. By the time he was 22, he had already traversed almost all 48 of the continental U.S. and most of Europe. It wasn't until he wound up in Japan that everything changed though.... M didn't mind the rain. He had survived in both rural and urban environments and the only constant was that Mother Nature didn't care. If She wanted to drop torrents of water on you, or shake the ground underneath you, or throw you into the sky using the wind, She would do so whether you wanted it or not. M figured that's why people called it "weather." That was why he was alone on the street when he found the notebook. M almost walked right past it before his thoughts caught up to his senses and he stopped in his tracks. At first he shook his head. His mind must have been playing tricks on him, but he still turned back to confirm what he had seen. In a drenching downpour, the notebook was completely dry. And somehow, it was staying dry. Every drop that hit the pages turned as black as ink and pooled together into a perfect circle on one of the pages. Unable to resist, M reached out with a hand that was surprisingly steady. When his fingers hadn't done more than graze the inky void, he heard a loud cracking noise and a surge of energy coursed through him. As he fell to the ground, his body wracked with pain, he would later claim to have heard a whisper in his head before his passed out. "I like apples," it said. The next time M woke up, he was in a hospital. M hated hospitals. They were places with charts and files and tests. They were places of knowing. The doctors there told him that he must have been struck by lightning, but there was no scarring and no signs of a strike around where he had been found. In fact, the only difference that M found was that the inky pool from the notebook, that he still held clutched in his grip, was gone. Speaking of gone, it was well past time he was. Now that he was awake, the doctors and nurses were starting to ask questions. Questions like what his name was? Where did he live? Did he have anyone they needed to contact? How did he feel? What had happened to him? What did he remember? Bad questions. That was when M discovered something had happened to him. As he tried to shut them all out, the world around him blinked. Once second he was in the hospital room, then next he was...somewhere else. The more they pestered him, now asking things like what was going on, the more M shied away and thus, the more the world blinked, until eventually, the hospital was no more and M stood in a foreign place. The only thing he was sure of was that this wasn't Earth. That had been years ago and M had slowly learned about his new found powers. He learned about Shards and Shadesmar, and of all the worlds in between. And he loved it. What better place for someone who didn't want to be found than between worlds? I took a few liberties, but I wanted to create a character based off of my self-appointed title for a worldhopping game! M, holder of the Death Note Shard (More of a sliver really, but who's counting?) is ready to tangle with Hoid!- 181 replies

Mid-Range Game 3: When Chalklings Attack
Metacognition replied to Sart's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I keep forgetting to get around to locking this one, so it's time to do so! There were some great mechanics in this one with the Lines of Warding. I really hope someone finds a way to use them again sometime, as it was a lot of fun to try to balance it all! Thanks ASmartGuy for GMing! If you'd like to try your hand at running a game, whether it be a Quick Fix or a Main Game, feel free to contact Gamma, Wilson or myself. Not only will we get you added to the list, but I'm sure we'd be more than willing to help out in any way we can as well! You can also ask questions and get some hints and feedback from everyone over here in our Art of Game Creation thread. Keep an eye out for the next QF game, which will be starting sometime soon if you'd like to join in the fun! And for the voyeurs, Long Game 9: The Empty Throne Part 1: The Barrow Barons is up and running!- 213 replies

Mid-Range Game 3: When Chalklings Attack
Metacognition replied to Sart's topic in Sanderson Elimination
As you should be; as you should be. Mwahahaha!!! But I've got to hand it to Kas and Twelve. You guys basically stayed off my radar pretty well. If I had survived, we might have gotten Wyrm, but there's still a good chance we would've still lost to you two, so bravo! I'm not too concerned about getting killed off early. It makes sense to take out those that pose a big threat. I have no problem being so feared that I'm a primary target! I take it as a sign of respect and prestige. It's just going to be incredibly difficult for whenever I'm part of the evil faction, as no one will expect me to survive longer than the first few rounds! Don't be too hard on yourself. Wyrm is very good at not looking suspicious. Besides, who else would you have given it to? Kas? That wouldn't have worked out much better! Thanks for a great game, Sart! Even dying early didn't keep me from enjoying this one immensely and I've never read the Rithmatist yet! Your write ups were great and now I'm going to have to get a copy of the Rithmatist, as you've peaked my curiosity with your excellent write ups! ....Oh, and I suppose I should congratulate the Forgotten for pulling off the win... So, yeah, congrats... I guess....- 213 replies

Mid-Range Game 3: When Chalklings Attack
Metacognition replied to Sart's topic in Sanderson Elimination
"Well, technically, it was my plan," Matt mumbled as he plopped down next to me. "But at least they're doing something and considering that Will divided everyone according to the roster instead of switching anything up, I have no problems with the proposed set up. We'll need those Lines of Vigor for ourselves eventually, but this should help give us an idea of where to go from here." I didn't know what to say, so I just shrugged and passed him some rations. Those he accepted with a grin and nod of thanks. We sat in silence for awhile, waiting as the rest of the platoon argued over the semantics and watched the sun starting to set in the distance. I was probably the most peaceful moment we'd had all day and it gave me hope.- 213 replies

Mid-Range Game 3: When Chalklings Attack
Metacognition replied to Sart's topic in Sanderson Elimination
It had been some time later before Matt finally made his way back to the heart of the camp. Some of the rest of us, realizing that it did none of us any good to starve ourselves, had started doling out what rations that were to be had. "Okay everyone, I've been over our Lines and while they're not perfect, I think they might be sufficient. Here's what I suggest we do for now. I think that there's no need for us to be using any Lines of Vigor at this point. They're more likely to backfire on us and keep someone from doing their job rather than stopping any of the Forgotten amongst us. That just leaves us with Lines of Forbbidance, Lines of Making and Lines of Warding. I suggest we break off into two teams; those that will be making Lines of Making and those that will be creating Lines of Warding. This will increase the defenses of the camp greatly and there will be enough people double checking that those that were supposed to make Lines of Warding did as they were supposed to. If someone didn't, then they are likely one of our non-rithmatists or they were busy doing whatever the Forgotten do.' "I believe this to be our best chance to keep our Lines strong and also hunt down the Forgotten hiding here. Now, since there's no one of sufficient rank here to take charge, I leave it up to a vote. What say you?"- 213 replies

Mid-Range Game 3: When Chalklings Attack
Metacognition replied to Sart's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Codes? How is being in character code? I think you guys got so used to blue font that you forgot you could do things in character to get your point across! I'm just trying to stay in character as much as possible to make things more fun. If you'd rather I only focus on the technical aspects of the game and not on the RP, then at this point, Jain and Maill both took that to mean that I'm speaking in some form of obscure dialect (aka, codes). In fact, they both called it the same thing even. That could represent a bit of hive-mind speak due to them both being Forgotten. Add into that the fact that it sounds like they're subtly trying to defend Aonar's mistake earlier and we might have already found our Forgotten! No, instead, I'm trying to keep things as much in character as I can. That's not writing in code. We shouldn't be discounting anything that's not written in blue font in the first place. After all, what's the fun of designing a character if you don't get to use it!- 213 replies

Mid-Range Game 3: When Chalklings Attack
Metacognition replied to Sart's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I'm calling Ashiok, Roddy, as that makes things clear to me and I don't think Aonar gave his character a last name, so my vote is for Aonar. It seems to me that his decision to vote for me could just as easily be turned towards himself. The fact that his reasoning is shoddy actually makes me suspicious of him in the first place. That he came after me is just icing on the cake. Edit: Nah, he's not always angry, but it has been a trying day for the platoon, don't you think?- 213 replies

Mid-Range Game 3: When Chalklings Attack
Metacognition replied to Sart's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Matt's eyes burned with barely contained anger, as he rounded on Aaron. I had never seen him like that, but considering the stresses of the day, perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. "I haven't contributed, Aaron? Is that what you think? I've suggested that we figure out our defenses and our plan to get back to the front lines before we start worrying about trying to kill each other! You see out there?" -He gestured to outside our Lines of Warding- "The real enemy is out there! If we don't figure out what we're doing about that, then it won't matter how many Forgotten we have within." As he spoke, Matt stepped closer and closer to Aaron, until they were standing toe to toe. Matt still hadn't raised his voice higher than a conversational tone, but the rage was clear. "And you dare stand here and accuse me of doing nothing... What's your excuse? You've waited till now to speak up and when you do, you come after me for the exact thing that you seem to be doing. I won't play your games. I have a reason to live, someone who is counting on me back home, and even if I have to drag the rest of you back to civilization while you're kicking and screaming, I. Will. Survive." Having said his piece, Matt spun on his heel and stomped off towards the boundary of the camp, likely to double-check the Lines. I was too afraid to follow, myself. If this was how each day was going to go, I didn't like our chances of survival... or my chances of staying sane.- 213 replies

Mid-Range Game 3: When Chalklings Attack
Metacognition replied to Sart's topic in Sanderson Elimination
While all I could do was watch in horror as our platoon was left leaderless and behind enemy lines, Matt just sighed and squared his shoulders. "This is not a good time for panic," he said. "We need to shore up our defenses, if we want to survive and we're not going to be able to do that if we kill indiscriminately! First, lets assess what tools we have at our disposal. Then, once we have a plan to make it back to the front lines, then we can start hunting these forgotten!" There are two Aarons, Jain. Ash and Aonar. So far, each one only has 1 vote. In fact, you're the one that's pushing things to the point of lynching so far!- 213 replies

Mid-Range Game 3: When Chalklings Attack
Metacognition replied to Sart's topic in Sanderson Elimination
*Meta didn't know what The Only Joe was talking about with this "2nd person view" stuff, but he assumed it was probably accurate. After all, someone claiming such a prestige position as the only of something couldn't possibly lie! Someone like that would never be wrong, especially about player counts! It could be some weird combination, but who was he to argue? Instead of double checking, Meta spent his time rubbing his hands together in anticipation of the new game. It was only a matter of time anymore...*- 213 replies

Mid-Range Game 3: When Chalklings Attack
Metacognition replied to Sart's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I looked to Matt after Kingswright's announcement and we broke rank. He just shrugged and said, "It is what it is. This is why we're here. We'll still do what we came here to do. Reinforcements or not, the line has to hold, so we'll freaking hold it or die trying!" "...For Sasha's sake," he said in a whisper. I didn't have his confidence. In fact, I was so afraid, my whole body was shaking! I didn't have his motivation either, but I knew that no matter what, I'd follow him to the front. His eyes burned with a zeal that I had never seen before in anyone. I was entranced. He'd either lead us to ruin or victory; of that I was sure. Which it would be was up to be seen. Though, if I admit it to myself, I partially stayed to sadistically see which it would be.- 213 replies

Mid-Range Game 3: When Chalklings Attack
Metacognition replied to Sart's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I wasn't planning on playing, as I wanted to give Wilson a turn since she was gone on vacation for some of the last few games (plus I have yet to read The Rithmatist), but I'll gladly join up, as I love the concept of the game! Please excuse any mistakes I make towards cannon! While barely surviving among the other recruits, I met a man named Matt. He was of an average build with short-cut brown hair. Matt hadn't signed up for glory or for honor. He came from a broken home from one of the inner isles. He confided in me about how his father left and how it drove his mother to drink. While this wasn't the life he had planned, he would constantly tell me, "it's better than being at home." I kind of envied him, as he sent any money he made back home; to his younger sister. I don't know if I ever cared for anything as much as he seemed to care for her. "She'll grow up not knowing the same hardships I've faced," he'd tell me. "She's really something and she'll make it, just you wait and see!" If keeping her alive meant holding this line, then that was Matt would do and I had no doubt that he would give everything he had to do it. I was just along for the ride.... Trying a little something different, like what Sir Jerric did in the last MR (I really enjoyed that perspective). Matt is my character, but I'm writing him from another's perspective. I hope this doesn't confuse anyone!- 213 replies

Mid-Range Game 2: Servants of Honor
Metacognition replied to Renegade's topic in Sanderson Elimination
This will probably be locked around the same time that Bartbug's game starts, so get in any last minute thoughts! -
I keep meaning to get signed up, but coming up with a character that doesn't have a background is fairly difficult, so let's see how this goes: Suddenly, there's a loud crack and the walls start to shiver. It's followed by another and another! It was as if a giant was stomping around outside. ...Which isn't actually that far off! The far wall crashes inward with a shower of brick and dust and the silhouette of a large, imposing figure fills the gap. "Yay!" The giant figure exclaims. As he steps into the light, you can see a childish grin on his face. "Hello! Met-al is Met-al! Met-al not care aboot fansee things. Met-al just like to hit things! Also, Met-al never learnd how to not refer to himself in first person. Met-al not care tho, as long a Met-al can hit sumthing!" -you can see an almost sadistic glint in his eyes at that- "Met-al not reely care aboot wat Met-al hit eether...." Also, while I'm loving all the fun speculation on the Speculation Doc, I think you guys should go ahead and just set it up already. While I can't say for sure, the last few pages have mainly been about it and not much else and I worry that it might be distracting people from actually getting signed up. Also, Welcome all the new faces! I wish you all the best and I hope that you'll join us for more games in the future. May your time here be full of chaos, fun, and the deaths of your enemies!

Mid-Range Game 2: Servants of Honor
Metacognition replied to Renegade's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Yeah, at least you survived this time, Jain! Ren, We're working on an award/achievement system* as is right now (Gamma, you need to check in again! ), so while you can definitely do any awards you like and all, they'll basically become unofficial once we finally get it out. *I'm thinking we need one called Clean Sweep in honor of this game. Most of my thoughts on the game are either in the Skybreaker Doc, or the Dead Doc afterwards, since I didn't survive very long. That 2nd Cycle was insanely lucky for you guys. From there, it was just all downhill for us. Well done! -
Tie the random kill to the money somehow? Something like if it's not used, they can't gain any coins for that cycle or they lose 1/3 of their coins if they don't use it? That way, they don't have to use it, but they'll be behind if they don't!
-
It's been awhile since I've had time to check in here, so I figured I'd go back over the most recent games and give what little feedback I can! A Smart Guy (Rithmatist): The reason you probably haven't gotten any feedback on your game is because it looks great! You've done a good job of balancing everything. The only thing I'd even suggest is to make the Wild Chalklings equal to the number of The Forgotten minus 1. That way, if a Sentry is involved in the game, the Rithmatists have a two person buffer when the game starts to get close, but I don't think that would be necessary. I'd say it's good to go! Wyrm (Living Rough): "If they post in the thread during a Cycle, vote for a player or take a non-gambling action, they get a coin." So the only way to get more than one coin per Cycle is to gamble or sell your vote, yes? Are players allowed to set a minimum bid price on their vote? Since they don't get to choose the target of their vote, they should be able to at least set a minimum bid or else someone could sell their vote for only one coin. "All the players who support the lynch of a lynched player will split the coins equally, rounded down" I assume you mean that they will split the amount of coins that the lynched player had. What happens if the lynched player doesn't have enough coins for everyone to even get one coin? No one gets anything from the lynch? "Spinner - A Spinner's kills cannot be prevented (even by another Spinner), nor can their votes be negated. In addition, the first attack that would kill them will injure them instead." I like this, as it stops any chances for a 'Follow the Cop' scenarios and the first two parts make sense. If it were me, I'd cut their ability to survive the first attack though, as that makes them a lot more powerful than the other roles, IMO. New One (Twinborn Village): Joe and Wyrm are right; you're insane. And this is coming from the guy who though UberTin would be manageable! O.o That said, it looks incredibly complex and fun. You're going to have a horrible time trying to balance this. There's just too many factors. Balancing a typical game is difficult enough and that's not even counting all the crazy ways your players will use any powers you give them! I'd almost say to not even try. Let it be the most horribly random game out there and let the chips fall where they may. It'll either turn out just fine or it'll be a resounding victory for one side. The Only Joe (Free Kingdoms vs Ook [if you don't know what I'm referencing there, I'm sorry]): You have some very interesting ideas going on there, especially the abilities that allow actions to occur later on. The problem is, we don't have much reference to what you mean by half Cycle and such. Is this a QF, MR, or LG? How long is each turn? When are abilities able to be used? Some of the abilities are confusing about whether they're passive or activated (for example, do Shocker Lens need to be activated?). How many actions do players have each turn? Do the Evil Librarians know who each other are at the beginning of the game? How do Smedry players adopt a player? What happens if they try to adopt a non-Smedry player (as this could be used to figure out who is who)? I think the idea looks very cool and it has some great mechanics and I understand that this is likely a work in progress, but a little additional information would go a long way for us to be able to give you some ideas! Phew! I think that's the last few games! It's great to see all the ideas you guys come up with! If you look at the original game (Mafia/Werewolves) and then look at all the different ways we've modified it in here, it's amazing. Truly, we're either all insane or too creative for our own good!
