Female Villains in Epic Fantasy (General Spoilers)
Atilium replied to Mistdork's topic in General Discussion
1. Yes, I do. But then, I haven't read very widely, so don't take my word for it. 2. I think it's a combination of many things. The main thing is that big publishing houses change slowly. I actually started a thread about female authors in fantasy few weeks back and we concluded that its probably a publisher thing - the publishers won't publish epic fantasy written by females. It's got to be romantic urban fantasy or YA fantasy. Maybe the publishers think the majority of fantasy fans are male and would therefore not enjoy a female villain? Maybe male writers don't like the idea of writing a female villain? I don't know. Just spitting out random thoughts here. 3. I'd have to think on this one for a while.... In terms of some books I've read with great female villains, try Empress by Karen Millers, maybe? I hated almost every character in the book, yet some how I feel like it was a great book. The Paradox Series by Rachel Bach also had an interesting female villain-type female, though it's actually a sci-fi opera, so dunno if it's what you're looking for. And I haven';t read the last book, so I don't know if it ends well. that's about all I can think of off the top of my head. -
I'm not normally one for webcomics myself, but ava's demon has captivated me.

The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss
-
yeah, the one-panel pages annoy me too. But the beautiful art and intriguing storyline is worth it, I think.
-
My dads name is Kenton, so reading a book with the main charterer named Kenton is going to be weird.
-
if you haven't read this webcomic, do it now.

Randomly interjecting here on the 12th page because I just finished the first book and I noticed this quote, in Chapter 43 Maybe some clue as to the source of the second book's name? I haven't read the second book yet though...

Do not be deceived by the title, his isn't some profound theory on the similarities between alphabets in the cosmere world or something This, my friends, is... a Cosmere ABC So my littlest brother just learned his alphabet and has been walking around singing the song non-stop, so I thought, why not make a Cosmere ABC? Here goes.... Note: I haven't thought of something for everything, so if you have anything to fill in the blanks, or anything to add, please tell me! Note 2: I don't want to include anything to specific, such as character names or place names, (Shattered Planes, Elntris, Kaladin, Vin, etc) unless they're "big" things like Ati or Hoid Note 3: I havent read Shadows for Silence or Sixth of the Dust, so sorry can't include much from them A is for Adonalsium, Ati, Allomancy, Ashyn and Ars Arcanium too too. B is for BioChroma and Braize C is Cultivation and Cosmere and Cognitive D is for Dominion and Devotion E is for Endowment F is for Feruchemy and Forgery and First of the Sun G is for ...? H is for Harmony, Honor, Hemalurgy, and Hoid too I is for Investiture J is for....? K is for...? L is for Leras M is for MIstborn N is for Nalthis, and Nazh O is for Odium P is for Preservation Q s for...? R is for Roashar, Ruin, Rayse and Realmatic theory S is for Shard, Sel, and Scadrial T is for Threnody and Taldain U is for...? V is for...? W is for Worldhopping X is for....? I play some music and then either sit alone for a short while or talk to a friend online. It doesn't necessarily cheer me up, - as in I'm not cheerful afterwards , I'm just... not sad anymore.

for myself, after finishing WoK I looked up fanart, which led me to the Coppermind and... BOOM. Mind blown. A little while later I joined 17thshard (:

Haha, I must say you (and GRRM) have a point. Been trying to get hold of the first book for years! I must say I LOVE Garth Nix, A Confusion of Princes was awesome To clarify, I don't mind the occasional short scene. So long as there isn't a scene in every chapter (and there's no rape or incest or something). For frame of reference, nothing really beyond The Black Prism or The Dragon's Path. Thank you very much for the recommendations everyone! Though I have read a few of the things mentioned (Rirya, for example) a lot are new to me. I'll be certain to check them all out (: Off topic, does anyone know how to pronounce Riyra. I've read all eight books and I can just never decide weather its rie-ear-ee-ya or Rie-rah.

I can see your point and I partly agree with you... but on the other hand, knowing what the root is helps me. In my one world I ahve a small island-continent that is almost entirely desert and mountains. So I looked up names that meant "dry" and "mountain" and combined two of them and fiddled with the spelling to form a name for the country. The name is no longer recognizable as either of those, but in my head, I feel as if I didn't just pull a fanatsy-sounding name out of my head. I tried making my own language last year... nope, not as easy as Tolkien, Paolini and Brandon make it look! (though you could argue Paolini's ancient language was a rip-off of Eupoean languages all squished together) sure sent! yeah that could work... kaiein means "to burn" I could maybe combine naevi and kaiein... Kainevien - to burn the birthmark?

well its a lot more regal and stormfather-y in my head but... yeah, something along these lines http://sta.sh/0ics63ve1is

"pfft men, distracting me when I need to be thinking about other things... hmm, now, where did that mysterious note say she must be?" this is probably two sentences
-
actually, I kind of see the profile of a huge person reaching a hand out over the bridge.. uhm.. yeah.

I did think of Naeviomancer... I must admit I like it Arcaevian is cool. Soul marked won't work, I have another magic system in the same world that focuses heavily on souls. Not sure about thaum. I like the sound of it but I'm worried well-read Fantasy readers will recognize it,and as (i think) I mentioned I don't even want to say the word magic once, or associated words ie witch, mage etc.

Thanks for all the recommendations! You guys are awesome. RE Kingkiller: I just started the first book. I have heard about the scene in the second book with Felurian... is it possible for me to skip that scene without missing serious story things? I must sound like such a newbie I have started WoT, on the fourth book now and loving it (: Go Matt! Yeah. I don't have anything against YA fantasy, I just find that often if an author is purposefully writing for younger people they can be a bit.. condescending. It annoys me One of the reasons why I love Diana Wynne Jones so much is because she doesn't treat her YA readers like we're stupid. RE Discworld: Hells yes. Love this series. Terry Prattchet is the man. I'll def look into everything else you all mentioned, thanks! EDIT: Just looked up Monster Blood Tattoo on goodreads, it looks awesome! EDIT 2: Does anyone know if Amanda Downum's Necromancer Chronicles is clean? David Dalgish's Shadowdance series? Ryan Anthony's Blood Song? Abercombie?Peter V Brett? Glenda Larke's Watergivers series? All books I have on my wishlist.

That's a cool idea! They're not elemental but I still love the sound of Firemarked... Loving Imprinted... really gives the impression that they believe a god is "imprinting" them. Thanks! Hahaha! I was thinking something along those lines... though I'm worried it would be a bit confusing for the reader? I love doing this too, though I often find that nothing works.... or lots of them would work and I cant choose It's always possible to alter the spelling, like turn Zhigosan into zaegosin or something.... hmm...

Okay, so I'm a 15-year-old girl who doesn't really like reading about sex in every book. But I don't really enjoy reading only YA books. One of my favorite things about Brandon is how his books are adult fantasy but without more than references to sex. I don't mind reading references to sex, or whores or whatever, (think Black Prism by Brent Weeks) but full-on sex scenes put me off. (Even something like the sex scene in Rachel Bach's Fortunes Pawn is fine, so long as its infrequent.) So anyway, the point of this thread is, anyone know any great fantasy books/series that are "YA Friendly"?

Oh I like those.... "cleanskins" is awesome too. Sure, I'll PM you

Ah well basically, the magic users (slang name Burners) are all born with birthmarks that they "burn" (kinda like branding) and different types of marks grant different "powers" - enhanced speed, strength, etc, for the duration of the burning. Very simple explanation there, I can PM you if you'd like more details? not very comfortable with putting my best ideas up n the internet for anyone to see

Okay, so I'm working on a magic system and I'm trying to find a name for my magic users. I have a slag name already, I'm just looking for a more... "formal" name, like Misting vs Allomancer. But I don't want it to end in "-mancer" or "-mancy" or anything like that. And I don't want "mage" or something since I want to have the feel that my magic isn't magic, it's a scientific part of the world. So does anyone else have any idea of prefix's or suffix's or ancient names or anything for magic users?

Brandon's writing quirks
Atilium replied to Link Von Kelsier Harvey's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I notice those kinds of things all the time, and it makes reading a mediocre book VERY hard
