  1. That is SO. AWESOME.
  2. Ooh, I love this idea! I don't know poop about linguistics either, doing my best though... This is perfect, though, because Iskindarian culture places a heavy weight on thier caste system. This way simply by hearing someones name, one can tell from which caste they are. Thanks so much! oh, thats an interesting idea! Thanks! And I love your system - was considering something like that myself, but eventually discarded it in favor of the system I know have. What is the Everchanging Book of Names?
  3. Hey fellow Sanderfans, I'm really nervous about posting this because I've had instances before where people blatantly stole from stories etc that I posted on forums, but I really need some help, and last time I posted about a magic system I'm developing for the same city I got some great input. So uh.. here goes... This is a naming system I developed for my City-Country, Iksindar. For the moment, I'm calling it The Elemental Naming System, though don't be confused by the word elemental - this has nothing to do with earth, air, fire and water or hydrogen, oxygen etc. Here i've copy-pasted what I have in my notes: Iskindarian Elemental Naming System Elements: element -- invert-element ha ri re vi ki -- ik ka -- ak ke ku mi -- im na -- an ni -- in ne -- en lu li da di du ra -- ar ca -- ac zi -- iz za ze ta -- at Duel-Elements zim (zi, im) kim (ki, im) kar (ka, ar) liz (li, iz) rin (ri, in) zac (za, ac) zen (ze, en) dik (di, ik) kin (ki, in) Basic Rules Explained: All Iskindarian names are a combination of two or three of the above elements. So for example the name Keduna uses the elements ke, du, and na. Lets say, for example, you take the elements du, zi, and im to make the name Duziim. The problem here is that that results in a double letter. So you combine the entitlements zi and im to make the duel-element, zim. You may only use four elements in a name if two of them are combined into a duel-element. Each element consists of one consonant and one vowel. Pure elements begin with consonants, invert-elements begin with vowels. Possible Rule: invert-elements are "lower class". (Why? Could it be that vowels are unclean? Why would that be?) You may never use the same letter more than once in an Iksindarian name. (and so, of course, you may never use one element twice in a name) (why? what is the reason behind this?) Possible rule: A child's name must contain one of the elements, duel-elements or invert-elements of their mother or father, depending on the gender of the child. (Q: Are you allowed more than one duel-element per name?) Problem Name: Iskindar Is/kin/dar (ki, in; da, ar) This name conatins two i's and two duel elements. Do I simply say that it's an exception, or do I remove the rule that says a letter may not appear more than once in a dame? General rules Example Names: Hakim, Keduna, Lukida, Karac, Lizandu, Kiladu, Duzim, Haduna, Kurinda, Vizac, Izken, Mikadu, Tadiken, Rakindu, Kinalu, Kevina, Daliku, Kidar, Minalu, Ludavi, Anziku, Kudizac, Kilu, Dami, Lika, Zeka, Nadi, Tadu, Lireka, Atkurin, Darinku, Dukami, Lunaki, Kulida, Lunami, Vidalu, Kuzina, Mida, Akemi, Mina, Example Names Split To Show Separate Elements: Ha/kim (ki and im), Ke/du/na, Lu/ki/da, Kar/ac (ar and ka), Liz/an/du, (li and iz) Ki/la/du, Du/zim, (zi im) Ha/du/na, Ku/rin/da, (ri in) Vi/zac, (za ac) Ik/zen (ze, en), Mi/ka/du, Ta/dik/en (di, ik), Ra/kin/du (ki, in), Ki/na/lu, Ke/vi/na, Da/li/ku, Ki/dar (da, ar), Mi/na/lu, Lu/da/vi, An/zi/ku, Ku/di/zac (za, ac), Ki/lu, Da/mi, Li/ka, Ze/ka, Na/di, Ta/du, Li/re/ka, At/ku/rin (ri, in), Da/rin/ku (ri, in), Du/ka/mi, Lu/na/ki, Ku/li/da, Lu/na/mi, Vi/da/lu, Ku/zi/na, Mi/da, Rin/ku (ri, in), Ake/mi (ak, ke), Mi/na, That's about it. I'm open to suggestion, but I wont necessarily use every one. Please try and keep any ideas pretty close to the general "feel" I have here, if that makes sense. (Note that the city is based on a combination of arabian and african influences, with some indian) Hope you all like it and have some ideas for me!
  4. As a kid, I consumed every book in sight (my mother had to hide the ones I was too young for), so I honestly can't say what my first fantasy was. But I remember enjoying those cliche'd fatasies one always find in the children section of the library, normally involving a talking cat. Then when I was 11 I picked up thirst Eragon book and was mindblown. I searched everywhere for every kind of fantasy I could lay my hands on, until my sister's ex borrowed me the first Mistborn book. MINDBLOW AGAIN. Now, at 16, I know enough about fantasy to see the many and numerous flaws in the Eragon books, but I still occasionally re-read them, for nostalgia's sake.
  5. I can't re-read any books when I'm in The Mood. It has to be a new book, and beyond that, it has to be GOOD. This leads to complications, since I'm a broke 16-year-old with not-well-off parents. I wander hopelessly around the house complaining to my mother and then drown my sorrows in The Internet until I either get a new book to force myself to re-read something. (the fact that I only own one Cosmere book - borrowed the rest from a friend - doesnt help, either.)
  6. A cool idea! Thank you
  7. Interesting ideas! Ooh.. yeah, that could work... what would prevent non-eyeholders from trying, though? I love the two-Eye's thing... don't want to veer to close to Mistborn's Inquisitors, but I'll definitely consider it!
  8. I love that! Adds a slightly gory side to the magic system... Ooh, interesting idea! Or maybe everything in that colour is "deeper"? I'd have to research the science behind that...
  9. Major plot point there It has to do with the origin of the magic (kind of)
  10. Omg, I ADORE your Shallan! She looks so perfectly like how I imagine her. I coudln't help noticing that Kaladin looks kinda like Jesus..? Made me laugh. I love Rock and Dalinar, too!
  11. I adore your style! PLEASE draw some Veil (and some Kaldin..?)
  12. Oh, I love those names you have! Though i feel The Eye of Transformation and The Eye of Transportation are too similar to "Transformation" and "Transportation", two of the ten Surges in the Stormlight Archives. What if instead of Transformation, we say.. Eye of Alteration? Or... Eye of Transmutation? I'm thinking the Eye's themselves could kind of "undo" their effects, rather than there needing to be Eye's that do it for them. I like the idea of an Eye of Negation... how would it work, though? But where does an object go when it Vanishes? Hm... I wasn't originally planning a Heist story, but there being a hundred Eye's instead of just three has impacted it quite a bit.. the possibilities Eye's could over to thieves is endless! Do you want to private message me? We can chat about the story there (:
  13. Ooh, I like that interpretation. I might implement something like that in... I love all your suggestions! And those terms are very cool, I like the whole "Release" and "Capture" thing. You have a point about the Add Eye... was the thinking the same thing. Oooh, what if, instead of Adding, it.. Duplicates? Like, makes an exact copy of something - that would of course then cease to exist the moment one duplicates something else. (if that makes sense.) Honestly, I don't know why i resisted having more than three Eye's for so long. I think I'll go with your idea of about one hundred or so Eye's, and I'll also make them smaller, more convenient to carry around. I've had an idea floating round for a while about an Eye that can make things alive. This would, essentially, make them immune to Eye's. Of course the object would only stay alive until the Eyeholder either Released it or Captured something else in it's place. Oppinions on that?
  14. Hello everyone! I’ve been having trouble with a particular magic system (that still lacks a name) for a while now, and I’ve finally decided to ask my fellow Sandefans for help. So here goes… In my world, there are these things called Eyes. Spheres, made of a glass-like substance, about the size of a small child’s head. (or maybe a bit smaller? I haven’t really decided yet.) Inside the spheres swirls… smoke? Mist? Something along those lines. Once there were hundreds, even thousands, now there remains only three. A red one, a blue one and a green one. Or maybe a silver, blue, and gold. I haven’t really settled on three colours. Anyway, owning, or rather possessing, an Eye grants you certain colours, depending on which one of the three you have. One of them adds, the second removes, and the third changes. Lets say you own the one that changes. If someone were to attack you with a sword, you could change the sword to a small book. Or if you own the one that adds, you could ‘add’ a huge iron block on the end of the sword that unbalances the attacker. Or if you have the Eye that removes, you could simply remove the blade altogether, leaving the attacker holding only the hilt. The way this works is, everything in this world has a… soul thing? The best description would probably be a soul which is their identity. Like a stone’s soul will tell it, “You are a stone. You stay in one place. You do not soak up water.” Or a flowers identity would tell it, “You are a flower. When it rains, you grow bigger. When it is hot, you wilt.” Etc etc. The Eye’s are, effectively, captured nothing. They contain the soul, the identity of nothing. Therefore, they have the ability to be anything. When, through your Eye, you command the sword to become a book, the Eye is changing that swords identity, so it believes it’s a book. Adding or removing is similar, except instead of changing the items entire identity, it simply… removes part of it? A person who owns an Eye is called an Eyeholder. When one “bonds” with an Eye, you are, effectively, merging your own soul with the nothing-soul of the Eye. This merging changes your eye colour to that of your Eye. (Confusing sentence, I know.) This is, of course, because one’s eyes are like… well, you know that clichéd expressing “the eyes are the window into the soul?” Yeah, kinda like that. (I’m busy building a religion – and a side cult - around this.) If you give away ownership of the Eye before you die, you go blind. There are, of course, rules to the magic system. Firstly, you can not access the Eye’s powers unless the Eye is touching your skin. So if the Eye were sitting on a table when you were attacked, it would be useless to you. If someone else were holding the eye, it would be useless to both of you. Since you’re the Eyeholder, the other person will be unable to access the power, however, since it’s not touching your skin, you cant either. (if that made sense… er…) Secondly, you can only affect one thing at a time. So if I were to change the sword into a book, if I then changed the attacker’s clothes into chains, the book would become a sword again. So nothing affected by the Eye’s power is permanent – unless, of course, you never again use the Eye after changing/adding to/removing something from something. And lastly, the Eye’s powers do not work on humans. If I were to try and change the aforementioned attacker into a banana, it wouldn’t work. This is because a human’s soul has more than just a frail identity – it has memories, ambitions, etc. I’m not yet sure weather or not the Eye’s would have an affect on animals, or plants. My original idea was that they wouldn’t work on things that are living, but now I’m not so sure… The thing I’m really struggling with is what happens when an Eyeholder dies. My original idea was that the Eyeholder has to be alive to give the Eye to the next Eyeholder, but what if theres some sort of accident? What if the Eyeholder commits suicide? There are a few more details, but they’re not really important to the Eye’s, which is what I want help with. As I’m sure you can see, the magic system has its basics, but lacks a lot and has several obvious problems. My biggest worry is that its too similar to Brandon Sander’s Soulcasting. Anyone have any opinions on that? How can I change it to make it less similar, but still have it hold its basic essence? I’d appreciate ay feedback I can get! Please feel free to point out any problems you see – and maybe some speculations as to solutions? Thanks <3 Atilium aka Aimee
  15. These are amazing, I;m in love with your style! *whispers* can we see some Hoid/Wit? Or Navani? Or Szeth? Or.... Syl?
  16. I once read a story (can't remember what it was called) that was a Sleeping Beauty twist - basically, in the story, the guy who found Auroa was a modern-day teenager. It was such a cool idea, so badly executed!
  17. well, I haven't seen the Eli books mentioned here, so I was wondering if anyone has read them and what their thoughts were... The Legend of Eli Monpress is a fantasy series by Rachel Aaron, with three books - The Spirit Thief, the Spirit Rebellion and The Spirit Eater. The story is continued in the series called The Revenge of Eli Monpress (or something like that), with the two books Spits War and Spirits End (not sure if I have the whole two-series thing right tho, its a bit confusing...) anyway, I, personally, enjoyed them a lot, and am excited to buy Spirits War, which I havent read yet. However, when I googled them, I found quite a lot of reviews which said they found the books "bad" or "eh" or "okayish" your opinions?
  18. I enjoyed the series. They weren't the best. They have a lot of mistakes. They would certainly never stand up to any of Brandon Sanderson's books. But for me, they were a fun read, introduced to me to the fantasy genre (outside of portal stories such as Narnia and The Secret Country that I read as a child) and I still enjoy re-reading them. You must remember this is only his first series published. I think he has great potential as an author.
  19. Forever and always! If I'm bored, I re-read a Prattchet. For me, though I dislike Rincewind as a character, I love Rincewind books because they often contain the best puns and wordplay jokes. And everyone loves Vimes. How can you not love Vimes?
  20. My sisters boyfriend loaned The Final Empire to her. while she was reading it, I told her of an idea I had for s story with a 'dying world' and she said it sounded similar to the world in Final empire, so I tried out the books and loved them ;d
  21. Hahaha, that would certainly be aweosme (I doubt I'll ever come up with something as aweosme as Brandon does though.
  22. Dumela! (That's hello in Sesotho) well, my name is Aimee and I'm fifteen. I really enjoy Brandon's books and I'm excited to meet fellow fans! A little bit about myself.... I hope to someday be a full-time author. I think biology is really cool. I ahve horrible tastes in music. I could probably get a degree in procrastination. I have way too many undeveloped novel/short story ideas. I really love cats. I suck at creating langauges. I think thats about enough fun fact, my username is based off Ati (The name of the orignial Shardholder of Ruin) cuz I really liked his character, even if he did creep me out a little.
