Well, I can't let that sentiment slide, as to ignore the problem is to condone it. Here are the facts: The Black Lives Matter movement is a racist, violent hate group that promotes the execution of police officers. Just look at their Twitter feed for starters. Here, here, here, or here. These "Assata Taught Me" shirts are referring to infamous cop killer Assata Shakur, otherwise known as Joanne Chesimard, who shot and killed a New Jersey State Trooper back in 1973. In 1977, Shakur was convicted and sentenced to prison but quickly escaped and has been a fugitive in Cuba ever since. She's also on the FBI's most wanted terrorism list. BLM glorifies Shakur as a hero and uses her writings and materials during training sessions. They pay homage to this Marxist cop-killer at every event they hold. Source Former Black Panther Party member Kathleen Cleaver, who is a supporter of Shakur, is " thrilled" about the BLM movement. Source BLM activists in Minneapolis chanted, "pigs in a blanket, fry em' like bacon," as they marched down the street. This rhetoric also came just one day after the execution of Texas Sheriff Deputy Daron Goforth while he was filling up his patrol car at a local gas station. If you aren't familiar, "pigs in a blanket" refers to the bodies of dead police officers in body bags. Source. Last December the man who killed two NYPD officers while they were eating lunch in their patrol car posted on his Instagram page, "Going to put pigs in a blanket" before carrying out his killings. In Ferguson, when news of the NYPD slayings hit, BLM protestors chanted and celebrated, "Pigs in a blanket!" This isn't happening in one place, it's happening around the country. BLM activists are using their own words and inspiration from convicted cop killers to promote the assassination of police officers. Finally, it's important to point out most of the African American community flat out reject BLM or strongly disagree with the movement's tactics. Source. It's a racist movement, racist to the core... denounce the Black Lives Movement and replace it with All Lives Matter.

Racism (or colourism) is an evil that has existed for all of history. Whether you're talking about the KKK or the modern Black Lives Matter movement (shouldn't ALL lives matter). Even if society accepts it, that doesn't make it right. Would a historian writing about black slavery in America be supporting it? I think not! But it's a fact that existed and was accepted for too long. Brandon shows that many problems arise from the colourism in the Alethi society, and I think the parallels to history and modern problems are right on track.

Mistborn spoiler, kinda...

Yeah, there are three other games I was thinking about backing too, but I really only had the funds for one and chose Scythe. A lot of the projects have giving levels that are really expensive, and I think, "Oooo, I really what that too!" I can see how it'd get addicting. I'm trying to think about it as an investment too, and I can say I helped "develop" that game.

Does anyone support projects on Kickstarter? I just did for the first time; it's a board game called Scythe that looks pretty fun. I hope it does well commercially. What other cool projects have you guys found, and do you support them financially?

I think Goodreads already does this.

I have not read Shadows of Self yet, so please no spoilers for book 5. Why are there no more mistborn in the Wax and Wayne series? Has it just been bred out? If so, I imagine it would become exceedingly rare but not impossible. Is there a confirmed answer or just speculation? Also, why were there no ferrings or twinborn in the original trilogy?

I have mixed feelings about Windows 10. What I like: * The upgrade was a snap - far easier than any other OS upgrade in my life. I had to update a few drivers afterward but everything else still worked the same. * The UI is nice and the search function is incredible. * Oh, and it was a free upgrade! * DX12 supposedly makes games run faster. What I don't like: * I hate, hate, hate the forced updates. I usually update once every few months, but Windows 10 forces me to update the same day the update comes out. I don't want to stop what I'm doing to update/restart my computer, and I don't want to leave my computer on all night to do the update overnight. Plus, if it works for me, I don't want a bug fix for some obscure printer that I don't even own. I've even had my computer restart unexpectedly for a surprise update in the middle of working on my dissertation. Arrrraaahhhh!!!! * There are the normal slew of bugs that are associated with a new OS, but those should be eventually fixed. * There is also the normal learning curve associated with a new OS since Microsoft has to move everything around. * Where is Windows Media Center?

Tips for asking questions at signings?
navybrandt replied to IBNobody's topic in Events and Signings
I recommend posting your potential questions here, in case some people already know the answer or can recommend a better way of wording it. They also know how likely you are to get RAFO'd and can help you avoid "wasting" a question. Finally, if you can, be sure to post the question and answer here when you're done. Good luck! -
Nothing! I don't think that's what he was saying. That's just what works for him and his relationship, and I think he's saying that's more common that most people want to admit. (That's what I got out of it, but I'm not trying to put words in anyone's mouth).

I love that the discussion is about adding realism to comic books. Isn't the point to take us away into a fantasy world that ISN"T real? Now my fantasy is different that your fantasy and really we're buying the author's fantasy. But, if I'm selling a comic book to an audience that is 93% male (*source), then masculine men and sexy females is what sells. Perhaps there's a market out there for something different though and someone with the right talent should capitalize on it. Maybe female fantasy lovers are ignored, overlooked, trod upon. Maybe people want to see an "average joe or jane" do great things. The fact is, you can't please everybody, and you can't please anybody all the time.

Honorable mention to Wilfred too. I know he never traveled full time with the Doctor, but really neither did some of the others mentioned. They're more recurring characters than companions. I'll always love Sarah Jane Smith too. Definitely an old companion but showed up a lot in the NuWho too. She had a total of 5 or 6 seasons plus two spin-offs. And she met 9 of the Doctors! May she rest in peace (Elisabeth Sladen that is).

It's true; Capaldi hasn't really fit in his role as The Doctor yet! If only Moffat would give him a chance by bringing back Doctor Who and quit writing The Clara Show. Then, Capaldi might develop and grow on us as The Doctor instead of Clara's companion. Seriously, the incessant focus on everything Clara makes me really want to stop watching for a while.

At work, it's the cover of Way of Kings. A good conversation starter and chance to talk about Brandon's books. At home, it cycles through a bunch of pictures that include some Cosmere and Dr. Who pictures.

F-16 Breaks Off to 15,000 Feet in 45 Seconds
navybrandt replied to Arondell's topic in General Discussion
That is super awesome. If you ever get the chance to ride along on an Aircraft Carrier for a day (they do that for family sometimes), I highly recommend it. They put on an airshow for the riders and do things that they just can't do over land. Things like break the sound barrier right next to you and blow stuff up - not to mention taking off and landing with you standing right there on the flight deck. -
Age related question - are you happy?
navybrandt replied to Delightful's topic in General Discussion
It's kind of unrelated, but I would like to add that asking questions like this is awesome! It gives an older guy like me free liberty to express what I've learned over the years. I get a lot of wisdom from older or more experienced people - especially my dad (I'm blessed to still have him). Getting wise advice is one of the best things a young person can do. Ask questions of a lot of people and you will form an image of the likely outcome of major decision you make, lifestyle choices, behaviors, attitudes, etc... One caution though, don't shop around for the advice you want to hear to justify what you want to do. If you do that, you're deceiving yourself. If 3-4 people that care about you are all advising one thing, it's probably good advice, and you shouldn't follow the advice of the one person that's telling you what you want to hear. -

Of course, if I could go back 20 years and invest in Oracle or Qualcomm, I'd probably do that. -
Age related question - are you happy?
navybrandt replied to Delightful's topic in General Discussion
Sorry, I didn't read every post, but here is my perspective for the OP. I'm 41 years old and happy where I am today. I've made mistakes but they made me into who I am today. If you're not happy where you are today, trust me, it does get better. You just need to make choices that will get you where you want to be. It's never too late. Sometimes it just takes time. If you hate school, you'll eventually graduate. If you hate your job, you can find a new one eventually (or at least go home at the end of the day). etc... Sometimes it takes a new perspective. There are things that we can never change and will never go away, so you need to learn to accept things and "look on the bright side." I'll probably never be a millionaire, but I'll probably also never be homeless. I have constant back pain, but at least I can walk. etc... Sometimes it takes actions. If you're overweight then you can diet (Yes, I know there are medical conditions. In that case, it would fall into the category of things you can never change and need to accept). If you always live paycheck to paycheck, you can learn to manage you money better. If you're uneducated, you can go back to school. etc... The important thing is to learn from our mistakes and keep a humble attitude.
