  1. I see you have already been posting around the forums, before you made your introduction post. So in that case, Happy belated welcome to the 17th Shard forums. May you enjoy your stay and come up with some incredible theories along the way! Judging from your introductory post, I think that you are going to fit in here just fine
  2. Kelsier has blonde hair! everything i know is wrong...
  3. Hoid has to be no. 2 right?? We know that he has more then one magic system at his disposal and the fact that he is so old (or has at least been around for a long time) should make him worldly(Cosmerely) wise. He is probably a good fighter as well.
  4. thanks for the Advice, Because i really do not have the time to nurture a new obsession
  5. Wow, that is actually super helpful, thanks! I can see how it would be very easy to get lost in there though...
  6. I am not familiar with what the writing tropes in literature actually are and i was wondering to what extent does Brandon, and other authors, use them? What are common Fantasy writing tropes? Does Brandon ever make a mockery of the use of them? I felt like that is what he was doing in The Stormlight Archive with Rosharan society having such strict Gender specific roles. To me it made me look at the whole idea of Gender specific roles as ridiculous. Did he ever do something like that with other writing tropes that i never noticed? Finally, is there a trope that Brandon consistently uses across most of his books?
  7. In regards to Stormlight i actually found it really hard to talk about how Brandon used Gender stereotypes because he didn't really exploit them to further the story and he didn't seem to use them by accident either. What i did end up doing was looking at the contrast between the Parshendi and the Rosharan societies. In Rosharan societies everything is based on Gender and it is too a very extreme level(which makes it very hard to judge since it makes the roles of gender seem idiotic, such as men being illiterate). However in the Parshendi society they seem to not care at all about Gender specific roles and only take notice when in mating form and even then it is not based on gender so much as a need to procreate. Just looking from the Rosharan side, it is actually really good at showing how Gender Stereotyping and Gender Specific roles can be very misguided and detrimental to the advancement of a society.
  8. You are Right about Tyndwyl, and admittedly i did forget about Spooks Love interest, but i was originally referring to Mistborn one, The Final Empire. With regards to the entire Mistborn Series it does get better, but not much.
  9. For example, something that i found really interesting about the Final Empire was the lack of both Major and Minor Female Characters. Sure Vin is a strong female character that doesn't really conform to any of the stereo types, even when she is at Balls in a dress. she is independent and strong and even though Brandon does use romance, its function is more to advance the story and the focus on the romantics is not so strong. But how many other female characters are there? in the Kelsier's Crew, none. In the Skaa thieving crew? Only Vin if i remember correctly. Elend is engaged to another Female mistborn(i cant remember her name right now) and she does feature in the scenes at Balls. She is the only other female character that i can think of that gets any substantial screen time. This creates a weird contrast in that Vin is not the stereotypical female character, but then there are almost no other Female Characters in the book, which is a common stereotype that is used, unknowingly, by male authors
  10. Hello Everyone, For a School project that i am doing i have to make a presentation to my Librarian on seven books that i have read, and in the presentation i must recommend whether the book should be added to the library's collection, or i can recommend that it be removed. The decision to add or remove must be based on the gender stereotyping found in each book and what people will learn about the role of gender from reading it I am basically done with the presentation but i feel like i am repeating myself throughout the presentation and i have run out of good ideas/examples. So i thought that i would turn to the community that i know best and that i have found to be extremely intelligent and fair in regards to discussion/argument of a topic. Which is why i humbly come to you now. The seven books (Note that i can use an entire series as a single book) that i have chosen to analyse in terms of Gender stereotyping are as follows: 1) Stormlight Archive 2) Mistborn 3) warbreaker 4) Elantris 5) The Painted Man (Peter V. Brett) 6) The Name Of the Wind (Patrick Rothfuss) 7) The Black Prism (Brent Weeks) I look forward to the discussions we will have around this sensitive topic. if i do use any ideas or comments from our discussion i will reference it completely.
  11. Brand new update from Little Orbit on Facebook https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=826960633992685&id=365283756827044
  12. I love quiz up. What would making a cosmere sub category entail?
  13. I think we need to factor in Duralumin and atium. Sure the Avatars have unlimited resources but its not like Mistborn don't carry enough metals around with them to keep going for a while I think Aang would beat Elend, although Elend is more powerful than both Vin and Kelsier he is untrained and inexperienced. I think Kelsier would beat Aang because he would recognise how powerful Aang is and go for the killing blow. A simple Duralumin enhanced Steel pushed coin would end the fight. it is so small and would travel so fast, especially at close range, that there would be nothing Aang could do. (could Aang metal bend? i dont think it would make much of a difference but it could). I reckon Vin would Beat Korra for similar reasons above. In regards to the Avatar State i think they could both be Soothed/Rioted out of it, especially if it is enhanced with Duralumin. Now look at Atium. they would literally be able to tell if they were going to make fire, explode the rock beneath them ect. and then react accordingly. In Hand to Hand the Avatars are dangerous for sure, but Pewter would just make it so hard for the Avatar to get an advantage.
  14. If you love reading and have only read the Rithmatist then you are in for a treat. I'm going to recommend reading Steelheart and then the Mistborn trilogy. Happy reading my fellow Sanderfan! Fair warning, if you have truly only read The Rithmatist, these forums are full of spoilers for his other books so be careful.
  15. None. But welcome to the forums jabberwock. May you find your stay here comfotable and entertaining.
  16. Welcome, glad to have you. I am a lighteyes myself (blue) One of my favourites is definitely warbreaker but I also really enjoyed Emperors Soul. Favourite charachters: Kelsier, Vin, Hoid, Sarene, Dalinar kaladin, Jashna. (No particular order). Interesting fact: Kelsier is still alive(spiritual realm) and he and Hoid don't like each other.
  17. Welcome! What Sanderson Books have you read and what is your favourite?
  18. Welcome Sanderfan. Whats wrong with a little obsession? Hope you enjoy your stay and try not to get lost in the pit that is these wonderful forums.
  19. Yeah, there is no problem as connections are minor and unless you are paying attention and know what to look for you probably will not even notice.
  20. Thanks for replying Peter. Whatever the announcement ends up being, I am just very excited to finally hear something about the game. Good to hear that this is a big step forward as well.
  21. I know what you mean. I had almost given up as well but the idea of this game if they get it right is just amazing. If they nail the gameplay and stick to Brandon's original story then it will be worth the wait.
  22. Welcome Da-Bob. Glad to hear you are a fan of many generes. Be sure to stop by the "Other Books" section on your way into the pit that is the 17th
  23. Welcome Friend! I hope you find your stay comfortable and enjoyable. I am very impressed that you noticed Hoid without finding the Cosmere first. Very impressive. I think you are going to be a great addition to our ranks.
  24. So a couple of days ago I searched on Google to see if there were any updates on the Mistborn:Birthright game and found that there was literally nothing. So I found them on Facebook and sent them a message. This is what they said:(see in attached picture) So I guess we just have to wait a bit and there will be new information soon.
