I'm guessing that the Hierocracy (sp?) purged information about the Honorblades since they were connected to the KR.
-
Get out. Get out now before the spoilers find and destroy you utterly.

This is why I'm pre-ordering directly to Barnes and Noble and picking it up Tuesday morning. I was burned by Amazon for one of the Harry Potter books many years ago, and I don't trust them to deliver on time again.

I couldn't help looking, I'm too excited for this. There are no real spoilers in chapter 13, but there are a few juicy tidbits about Shardblades. It unfortunately stops right before the interesting part. Just don't read past that though, especially not the interludes.

I don't think we'll have any luck trying to figure out what day WoR starts and how long it is until the Weeping before we get the book, as there is just too much variation possible. Anyway, I finished the Kaladin timeline, or as much as I can get out of it, and made one for Dalinar as well. Dalinar's is much more loose, though we know that it spans months while Kaladin is bridgeleader of a shorter span of time, about a month and a half. Again, both can be found here, and I based it off WeiryWriter's notes. Cem, why do you think that Shallan and the warcamps start on the same day in WoR? Otherwise it looks like a good start before we actually get the book.

And he and all the bridgemen are freed in the ninth month. Do we know when the Weeping is supposed to start?

Thanks for answering! How do we know-is there a WoB? I kind of expected this, but it leads to even more questions than it answers. 1. Is Ruin doing this directly, or is it just a consequence of the spike being inserted? Practically, if Ruin's mind was in a state like Preservation's during the series, would the twisting still occur? And could Harmony stop this from happening and so render Hemalurgy useless? 2. When does the twisting happen? For example, if the spike is inserted in the heart, when is the heart moved aside? During the spiking? After it's damaged? Does that lead to the inference that Ruin can heal the body of any spiked creature, or manipulate it in other ways? I'll probably have more questions soon as I think about it...

Why are we suddenly putting everything in spoiler tags? We've been discussing the eshonai interlude since the beginning of this thread. Anyway... How could he not know? Assuming all our assumptions about honorblades are correct, Szeth's powers appeared soon after he took up the blade. Did he not connect the two? And if someone taught him, it must have come up once in discussion where his powers came from. Since he doesn't ever think of his Sugebinding as mysterious or coming from an unknown source, I think that Brandon just didn't write it in yet in order to keep it a secret. I don't see why the Parshendi would keep it a secret from each other, especially once the assassination was made and there was no need for secrecy. Remember, Parshendi seem to know Surgebinding on site, so they must have some knowledge of its capabilities. Second, even assuming that it was kept secret, the people in the scene are a top researcher and the general of their armies. If there is a need-to-know basis for this information, I think these people would be in the "know" category. You'll need to have more than a feeling to convince us, though!

I'm starting a re-read (well, a re-re-re-reread) of Mistborn and I came across Kelsier's line about how no one knows how Inquisitor's live with spikes in their eyes. I don't remember ever getting an explanation of why this works. Looking at the coppermind, I see that Hemalurgy "twists the body into something almost inhuman" and organs are moved around, but how does that actually work? Is there any specific information? How, and maybe most importantly by what, is this "twisting" done?

Shallan is a Parshendi?? So much makes sense now...

They know that Honorblades can grant Surgebinding capabilities because Szeth was in their service, and he told them what he was capable of and why. I think it's just that simple...

But then how did she turn the deck green in the one of the revealed chapters? She didn't draw a picture, just remembered it.

I really need to start reading more carefully! Oh well. I made a rough Kaladin timeline anyway, basing it off your notes. See if you like it!
-
Unless WeiryWriter missed some things in his timeline, I'm not sure we can. I'm trying to put one together now. Though I can string a bunch of chapters together, there are some gaps where we have no idea how much time has passed.

About number two: Assuming that the "great courage" that Lirin showed is in front of the mob, Kaladin should turn 15 just around the time of the dinner. Is there any clue what time of year that is? Another thought: Maybe Kaladin only has to be 16 when he arrives in Khabranth, so he'll leave sometime before his birthday.

So Shardblades are really bad news for some reason, which explains the spren reaction...that could mean ...Odium could...ah!! Storm it, I can't wait another week!
-
Does this mean anything Chaos, or are you just messing with us?
-
I always imagined it look something like this: Imagine that it actually looks professional, though.
-
Actually, Moogle, it does seem to be true. Szeth says this on page 20 if the paperback: Is there a quote about sucking in the Stormlight of the Plate's gemstones that you proposed? I would assume that a Surgebinder could decide what source s/he is drawing from, instead of just sucking like a vacuum all the surrounding Stormlight in the area.

So to sum up so far, there are about 20 Shardblades in the army on the Shattered Plains, and none in Alethkar aside from Amaram, which Dalinar presumably didn't know of at that point. Let's leave aside Plate for right now, as that get's complicated. Here is a minimal list of who has one: Elhokar Adolin Sadeas (once Dalinar's) A captured Blade given to the king to give away (notice the quote didn't say two captured sets, but one blade and one plate) That's 4/20 that the Kholin family has (had). 5/20 counting Gavilar's, meaning they had a quarter of total stength in Alethkar. Not bad. 6/20 if Elhokar has another set for dueling, a disputed point. This leaves 14-16 to split among 8 highprinces, leaving less than two blades for each army. Seems pretty reasonable. The rest that we know of: Brightlord Resi, in Highprince Thanadal's army One, perhaps two more in Thanadal's army, WoR spoilers: I think we can conclude the their aren't really any missing Shardblades, just that we haven't seen most of them yet. Sadeas does seem to have been an aberration before Dalinar traded him a Blade, though.

First, nomenclature: I think U should be labeled when Jasnah leaves the feast, because even though she says "middle," it doesn't really mean anything. W should be "the time at which Szeth leaves the feast," a bit more clear then "since." I think you're underestimating Jasnah's walk and meeting with the assassin. Try and act it out, reading it aloud and allowing generous pauses for silence and thinking. This should give at least 10 minutes, which means that if the meeting begins at V +15m, then it should end at least V +25m, if not later. Then Jasnah seems to sit in her chair and think for about 5 minutes or so, meaning she walks out of the room and hears the drums stop at V + 30 m. That means W + 4 = V + 30. In English, Szeth leaves the feast at about the same time Jasnah's meeting ends. In addition, for the assassin to comment that another is late without any kind of time-keeping device means that Jasnah was really late, at least 20 minutes, probably half an hour or more. So V = U + 20m, at minimum, if Jasnah left on time. We'll figure out just how long in a minute! Now, let's say that the King leaves the feast at U-.5 hours, which seems the upper bound of how long Jasnah would not have noticed him absent, especially if everyone was focused on her announcement. Also assume that he doesn't actually return to the feast when he says he will. Now let's shorten W to 2 hours past the king leaving, to take the minimum bound of "hours" Szeth mentioned and make this a bit easier. That means W = U + 1.5h, which leaves a long but not impossible time for Jasnah to go to Shadesmar, be late for her meeting, start walking, and hear the screams. Let's try and get everything at the timescale of U. To do the math: W = V + 25m W = U +1.5h Therefore: U + 1.5h ~ V + .5h U ~ V -1h And THAT is the huge time disparity: About an hour. The longer Jasnah takes talking and walking, the smaller it is. Adding to the original two "hours" makes it longer. A couple more disparate points: You give Szeth 7 minutes between leaving the feast and meeting the guards. That's an abnormally long time for passing the beggar's feast, walking down a hallway, turning right, and approaching an intersection. Possible, just long. You only give 5 minutes between Jasnah collecting herself and arriving at the meeting. Why so short a time to walk down two floors? I think you're right that there are about 3 minutes between the drums stopping and the screams beginning. Jasnah arriving first can be explained by the block Szeth cutting blocking the shortest way for the guards to follow Szeth. Notice how she doesn't have to go around it? First part of Timeline: Timeline in Table: (it's in image because I couldn't copy an actual table)

When reading the previews for WoR again, I stumbled across this line during Kaladin's inspection of Dalinar's camp in chapter 5: So is this just a superstition or is there some truth to it? Maybe Odium (or Odium-spren) can take over a dead body somehow? Or maybe Odium can capture souls and use them is some fashion like the Dark One in Wheel of Time? (*shudder*) I'm out of ideas. What do you think?

I love this theory! Mostly because I'm a physics person, though I only finished entry level (honors, but still) physics in college. I also want to add that Stormlight can be directly connected to energy by the fact that Lift converts food (glucose) into it. Maybe her body quickly breaks the molecules down, and the breaking bonds release Stormlight rather than thermal energy.

Where is this from?
