A lot of assumptions in this post still.
-
I feel more than justified in blaming the fans and Brandon. Lightweaving can be a function of Illumination without it meaning that everyone with access to the Illumination surge can Lightweave. It's my belief that that is where fans have made poor assumptions. I'm more than willing to blame Brandon for terribly confusing everybody if the Order is named Lightweavers and you can basically rename one surge "Lightweaving". What 3 people has Kaladin met? Again, we're making the assumption that Renarin can "Lightweave" without having seen him do it, just because he has access to a surge that we are again assuming is solely responsible for Lightweaving. So I still don't count him. Either way, it doesn't clear up the WoB in any way at all. If the surge is basically "Lightweaving" and Brandon was referring to the Surge, then Kaladin had met Renarin and Shallan. If the Lightweavers are two people considered "Lightweavers" though not based on the Order or the Surge, then Kaladin had met Hoid and Shallan. If Lightweavers referrs to the Order specifically, then Kaladin had met Shallan and one other character (perhaps Elhokar). It's that kind of confusion that leads me to believe Brandon would not be using the term to mean both an Order and an ability that can be used by other Orders. But I'll state for the fourth time: I've seen worse systems for naming in the past, so I haven't ruled it out yet. It's a reason not to go thinking we know which of those options is true though.
-
For whatever reason people keep suggesting that Lightweaver is a term derived solely from one surge, Illumination, and therefore is applicable to that surge alone. On the chart of KR, it seems to me that there is very clearly an Order labelled Lightweavers, which is a combination of surges, but that is being treated more like a place to double up on labeling the Illumination surge. I still think that theory is relying heavily on poor nomenclature, and being fueled by our desire to not have to change the term we've been using as a nickname for Illumination. There are pieces of the text that refer to Lightweaving and cite instances when it would appear only Illumination is being used, but I still don't think they are the same. That said, I've accepted that worse systems have been put in place for naming things in the past, and while I would be moderately disappointed, it is possible that the correct term for Illusion is Lightweaving. PS - Everyone keeps citing Renarin's illusions (lowercase), but have we seen him create an illusion that you would all label Lightweaving? I think that's an assumption on an assumption being used as evidence. He sees images of the future, and so far as I know that's all we get. If there's more than that, I've been subconsciously skipping Renarin paragraphs on my reread (which wouldn't be all that surprising actually).

Yeah, I'm sure it does happen, Peter.

It's non-Cosmere, but it is a character Brandon had a part in writing. Pretty sure I could come right out and reference the series, but now I kind of like that it's a mystery. It means you haven't read it, I think. If you are really curious, PM me and I'll tell you without spoiling who it is.
-
I doubt they changed the order name because someone used a fabrial with the same power. Pretty sure the device is made in imitation.
-
I suppose it was a pretty massive waste of talent and badass-ness; kind of a tragedy.
-
There is another Fantasy character Brandon himself has written about recently that had this problem, but I won't say because it's rather far into the series and a major spoiler. Don't forget Luke Skywalker either. Although that was somewhat like Kaladin's resolution....

Shadows pointing the wrong direction doesn't really indicate anything in particular so far as we know. It seems like the same experience Kaladin was having prior to actually meeting Syl; she was hanging around him all the time messing with things. Kaladin's was a little more normal than reversed shadows, though he did have moments where objects got stuck to him and that sort of thing involving his adhesion. Also, I don't think that is the proper timeline for the naming of the Order, but again, we can't really know. Back in the day, I'm sure fabrials were created in imitation of different powers. If they called the fabrial a "Soulcaster," I'm pretty sure it's namesake would have been the power it mimics.

What are you playing right now?
Bloodfalcon replied to Link Von Kelsier Harvey's topic in Entertainment Discussion
It is good. I just beat it. It plays a lot like.... a mixture between kingdom hearts and a dragon ball z game if you've played either. If not, it also plays like a naruto game, but I haven't played much of those. Air bending seems overpowered, water bending seems underpowered, but it's not really an issue at any point. Best of all, the game actually feels like a challenge if you play it on normal and aren't already into those types of games a lot. For $15 it's worth the fun of trying it out. If you want to wait on it, I'm sure it will be on Games with Gold in like a year. -

Unfortunately I've stopped playing Destiny and haven't encountered it, but I can ask my friends who are still on all the time. I also just bought The Legend of Korra and have been playing through that game. Really liking how challenging it can be. -
I really hope that's not the case. I hope the namesake powers are more than just powers shared between a couple of Orders. I always figured true Lightweaving would be a combination of the two. Like Shallan produces an image/illusion and is able to turn it into tangible matter as long as she feeds it resources. That would be how she could use both powers in a unique way. Jasnah could use Transformation and Transportation to move things between the realms in unique ways, and that is Elsecalling. It just doesn't seem right to say Lightweaving can be done by Lightweavers and another group. I'd chalk it up to very poor naming.

Ah, those aren't what I was thinking of when he said "skirts." I've seen a ton of fan art that basically cuts off the bottom of the armor for the women and gives them skirts.... like.... the breezy kind. That's what I thought he might be confused by because hell, it confuses me the most.

I don't recall seeing any with skirts, but they certainly weren't in the description of all the KR a that one keep Dalinar visits. If you've seen skirts on any drawings, they are either not KR or they are just fan art.

I'm not entirely sure on the "Judge of Death" title, but the cave is a nod to a broken spawn zone they had in place there. Players were forming teams and just farming that cave all day because it dropped so much loot. It was patched and they put that in to acknowledge it. It mentions a billion souls not being enough for master Razhul or something like that, which I think is the name of the Cryptarch. -
The proper timing for the big reveal in WoR epilogue
Bloodfalcon replied to king of nowhere's topic in Stormlight Archive
Wow, thanks for that WoB; I'm not sure I've seen that one before, but it's very intriguing. Between that and the alternate Kaladin decision, I think we're seeing every character could have been drastically different despite Brandon having an overall plan. Makes the entire plot seem sort of like... microchaos. -
Yeah, I think those two WoB's from Moogle verified it for me. Windrunning / Lightweaving seem to be a combination of the two Surges. However I will respect the Code of Forced Ignorance (which is what I just decided means "we don't have that book yet so we can't know") and admit that there are no in-text rules in place so far as we know for determining specifics. The Ars Arcanum author, whether he is the one who named the Orders or just collected the names which were pre-established, is not necessarily a source to dwell on. I know Nahz (sp?) is technically a character by WoB, but currently the Cosmere wide plot is just a literary tool Brandon is using to develop the universe and provide us information in a fun and interactive way. It's probably not wise to put too much consideration into whether or not Nahz knows this or that much less what his sources were.

Loveable Characters you actually don't care about....
Bloodfalcon replied to a topic in Stormlight Archive
Hahahaha I'm blindsided by different perspectives on characters all the time, but I have to admit, I've seen this one before. We'll see though. I've seen him under consideration for his own POV book at some point, so that might provide the time/place where Renarin shines. -
My hope is that casual observers aren't the ones who named the 10 Orders, but it does sound like that would have to be the case for this to occur. If two Orders are Windrunning and one is named Windrunners, that seems pretty inadequate. Same goes for Lightweaving. However, if two people are using the same power but using different resources because magic is location based, that provides an actual explanation for multiple "Lightweavers."

The proper timing for the big reveal in WoR epilogue
Bloodfalcon replied to king of nowhere's topic in Stormlight Archive
There was a "back from the dead" moment in Wheel of Time as well that took forever to occur. For me it felt a little underwhelming after so long. On the other hand, Jasnah's return felt the same way to me in WoR. I was happy about it, but again - underwhelming. I think a little more build up would have been nice. Maybe some things effects of her actions being seen by other characters though unexplained to the reader.... I don't know. I'm happy with it, but I think because I'm so thrilled with the entire book. -
Book 3 reading thoughts (warning Spoilers)
Bloodfalcon replied to bobsaveg's topic in Stormlight Archive
Take a look at the context. If we were at the front of the site, "Book 3" doesn't even mean anything. There's more than one series with 3 books. "Female" is so vague it's not even a useful word to include. It doesn't express anything. If all titles meant as little as that one did, I would suggest not having members waste their time posting titles to begin with. Just write and start typing. You make aspects of the site useless because you are worried about a minority of people who you've decided to remove all responsibility from. The fact of the matter is that people who haven't read that book half a year after it's release fall into only a couple categories: 1. People who are just picking up the series. 2. People who just haven't gotten to that book yet, but are interested. If you fall into group 1 and are upset by the spoilers here, take a quick look at what you just did coming to this website. It's a fansite with the sole purpose of discussing this content. If you blame anyone else for "spoilers" this far down the line, you're illogically reacting to a situation you got yourself into. If you fall into group 2 and are upset by the spoilers here, you truly are not passionate enough about the series to even make a claim. It's not something people like to hear, but think about it. If their issue was not having enough time to read as fast as others, that would be one thing, but if you read one chapter a day on your limited time you still would have finished months ago. You're essentially saying that you feel more comfortable asking others not to participate in an enjoyable discussion because it's about something you are clearly not even that invested in. And once again, you've come to a fan site dedicated to discussing the material. So fault is on you again. Nobody should have to censor every sentence they write on this site because of these two types of people, especially when there are already rules in place to govern the content placement - laid down by moderators. Additionally, this dude, bobsaveg, actually did a good job addressing the "spoiler" content despite my stance that it isn't necessary. He didn't give away a huge event, he gave a very general "Who, What, When" along with a warning. Not good enough, because who knows who might be the perfect amount of innocent, ignorant, and passionate to have a problem. And hoser, I made the "that guy" post, so don't worry about it. Spoilers are something that people are way overly critical about, so I make an effort to point out when someone is actually in line and being told otherwise. I don't mind being "that guy". -
Book 3 reading thoughts (warning Spoilers)
Bloodfalcon replied to bobsaveg's topic in Stormlight Archive
Still alive isn't a spoiler unless you just read a part that claims she is dead. And anyone who is in the middle of reading the book and instead comes to this fan site to look around should know they are in for spoilers. I mean, come on. -
Loveable Characters you actually don't care about....

It's really funny you mention Kaladin, because I definitely am reminded of him when I consider Renarin's future. He's going to have to step up in a big way soon and he's not used to the kind of pressure that will be put on him. He'll be criticized by everyone. He'll have to come to terms with his role in the world. Yes, I am reminded of Kaladin's own situation, but no, I am not mistaken. From what I've read, Renarin is constantly having breakdowns when it matters. They are understandable now that we know the cause and how it can be remedied, but that is his character as I know it. On top of that it looks like he does work hard to better himself, and at the end of the book he appears to step up a little bit, though even then he appears intimidated by the thought of the responsibility.power he's coming into. Maybe not without good reason - we don't know much about the pros and cons of his abilities yet besides a vague "can see the future," so it's hard to judge. But that is kind of my point. As far as I know, Renarin has only enough redeeming qualities for me to not care about him. I was a little relieved to learn of his powers just because they are interesting and I know that if I have to be reading about Renarin, at least the potential upside will be worth the frustration. -
It's been a long time since I've tried following Shadows of Self information, but I think I remember Brandon saying that Alloy was intended to be a stand alone initially, but not it will turn into a trilogy of short stories involving the same characters. Until I find a source, don't take that as fact. EDIT: Yeah, it's Wax & Wayne. Here's some detail.

Loveable Characters you actually don't care about....
Bloodfalcon replied to a topic in Stormlight Archive
I was referencing pressures Renarin has already seen, not those ahead (though I believe he will there too). It's happened on numerous occasions. When he's in the duel, for instance, is a shining moment. We don't find out the root cause for a while, he's uncomfortable interacting with his spren, but regardless of the cause, he breaks down at several moments across these 2 books. Now I'm curious though, where does Adolin ever fall to pressure? He's constantly winning duels and fighting on the battlefield.... He may not be good with women in general, but that's not really the same problem. Do you mean in upcoming books? That's probably more likely - that the solidity of the two brothers will reverse over time. But right now you don't see anyone going into a fetal position except Renarin, and at that point Adolin is too busy fighting several Shardbearers at once.
