  1. Hey, just saw your signature and thought it was really cool and creative! Do any other member have their own personal Orders picked out, or did you do that on your own?

    1. Edgedancer

      Edgedancer

Thanks. I did do that on my own. Similar things might be around

  2. Thanks for quoting that. Now that I see it, I don't really understand it. Can Nightblood bond with people instantly with what is basically an On/Off switch? Because he's popped into people's heads without more than a second of contact. I don't think the bonding is the same type unless being a heavyweight in the magical object world gives him that extra ability. I gotta go back and read some Nightblood encounters.
  3. I think the unwritten rule is that if your acronym exceeds the length of the first identifying word, you toss it and don't look back. Can we go with "Shadows"? I might not pick "Slow," but even "Slow Regard" or "Silent Things" is easier to type..... The rules are very loose.
  4. We've gotten another book that could count as three books based on length, and I still find this subject to be the most intriguing just for how little we know. We have so much additional information that somehow tells us so little. And to think we could be waiting decades before any of that gets written down...
  5. This was my take on it. There is a little discussion there too.
  6. Don't be against someone spending obscene amounts of money on a story we love! Hey - 17thShard billionaires... he doesn't mean it.
  7. The discussion has come up several times, but more as a "vote which medium" kind of topic, and for the most part this site wants to see it as an anime. It does seem to fit the mold a bit better for these two reasons (in my mind): -Like Moogle said, the budget would have to be ENORMOUS or you would have to severely limit the world/quality of the world that has been built. Between the spren, Shardblades, Highstorms, and general Surgebinding, I think you'd use up an entire season's worth of CGI budget for the first episode (assuming it is Szeth's experience at the start of WoK + intro to each character). I think magic is just too big a part of the world to be so limited, you know? But I guess all it takes is one billionaire SA fan to produce the show... -I think that the actors have incredibly specific personalities. I haven't brought it up before, but I think that you'd have to really nail these characters for their natural charisma to come across on screen. It's less of a problem than budget, but it is something that I think is very subtly significant. You could make a case that this is true for all acting, but I think there is something to be said for characters that are meant to have direct links to certain attributes. It needs to be conveyed in a way that isn't over the top but is always true to their nature. Tough job! All that said, I would love to see SA as a TV show. To me there is something more magnificent in perceiving a real human body to be doing something than an animated character (however much I love anime). When I imagine the scenes as I read, it's never in an anime style, you know? But that is preference, not what would actually be best for the story. PS I just kind of realized you can't do the Heralds scene at the start of WoK without revealing their faces and voices unless you throw their helmets on the whole time. It would be interesting to see how that turns out without being too revealing. There is supposed to be some mystery behind who they are, which occurs naturally as a book and much less so if you can see them.
  8. Wow, that is so cool! I'll have to look into that. Do you have to play rogue to get it? the comments suggest that. Makes you wonder who it is in that office that likes the books enough to throw a reference like that in.
  9. Brandon has commented on the similarity between Stormlight and Mistborn before and it gave me the feeling that the two were far more similar than we typically consider them, so I bet this is on the right track. I just saw one of the quotes yesterday - I'll try to go back and find it - but the similarity felt significant. It might have had to do with Elantris as well.....
  10. I hope it is a worldhopping thing, but I do like reading people's theories involving 6 mistings standing in a box and using their powers to travel time/space.
  11. Hahahaha, this thread is gold. I picture the KA (yeah, abbreviated) being a group of extreme introverts by nature, but I'll be happier if they turn out to be the pillow demon from the video above.
  12. Yeah, between the screaming and Stormfather saying "You will be a Radiant with no Shards", I think we can assume there won't be another blade coming his way. Unless an Honorblade is outside of that.... And I also think Dalinar could possibly carry Nightblood, but what I meant was that technically Nightblood is a Shardblade - though not by the typical definition of Roshar, I think. Brandon said something about this in an interview (calling Nightblood a Shardblade), but I'd have to go find the quote. That's what I was referring to, though I don't think it would be enough to limit the Dalinar/Nightblood combo. EDIT: INTERVIEW: Mar 6th, 2014 WoR Signing Report - Bartbug (Verbatim) QUESTIONIf Nightblood were on Roshar would he be a Shardblade? BRANDON SANDERSONYes, they are exactly the same thing. He is a Shardblade that is twisted and is a lot more powerful than normal.
  13. It could make for a cool plotline. Nightblood's got some pretty vague ideas on morality, and Dalinar is a letter-of-the-law type guy. Could be some pretty interesting conflict there. Also wonder what Stormfather would consider Nightblood to be. He said no Shardblades, and Nightblood technically is.
  14. Not only am I a cheater, I have been known to hit it and quit it. I'll get half way through a book and something more exciting will release, at which point I will drop the old book and sometimes never pick it back up. It's a scary thought for some people that can't leave anything unfinished, but I usually get swept up into different genres or series so fast that I never go back.
  15. Thanks for the tips! I don't need them to get better or anything, and I'm not about to get burned out, I just have such a large reading list that I feel I should maybe be knocking out some stand alone novels occasionally. I'm in a pretty unique situation (maybe less unique surrounded by readers here) where my reading is the one activity that I exclude from my budget. Books are pretty fairly priced, so it's never an issue, and this series has proved it's worth buying.
  16. I'm just starting Blood Rites from the Dresden Files. Liking the series right now - it picks up in the right ways, just as people said it would. I'm wondering though if there is a good stopping point any time soon where I might be able to read one or two other books before continuing the series. Of course, if the answer is "no, things keep getting better," I might just power through them...
  17. I always thought Charlie Brown had a little Hispanic flair to him. This just makes sense.
  18. I didn't say I was attempting to write a scholarly analysis and the content was just too silly. I said I don't like it because it is too silly. As in, things that are too silly are not enjoyable for me. Whatever you are supposed to do, that is something I do not like doing.
  19. I think we should give these "spam bots" a chance. Some of their links have been quite helpful, actually.
  20. xD sorry about that. I like thinking of the sixteen as a a carton of eggs now though. A shardic dozen if you will. There are a few broken already anyway, I guess.
  21. I'm not sure that Journey before Destination would support that. Wouldn't that more support "we can't sacrifice this planet to lock him here - we have to do things the right way" style of thinking? Maybe not. I think I have a grasp of that ideology and then I start to question myself. Is there a thread that defines that better?
  22. I was wrong. I took this advice and started reading Dresden Files again. I think the problems the first go around was me wanting something too particular out of it, having just come off of reading other fast paced action books, and having been absolutely sick of werewolves and the classic monster story characters. I'm half way through the third book now and I rather like how it is going. It still lacks a lot of explanation, but I've decided on a new approach: don't think, just read. As long as I don't try to guess or examine any of the events, it's a very fun, fast-paced thriller of a series. I'm looking forward to getting to the meat and bones of the overall story too. So this post is to basically deny my last post. If I had to pick a new one series to be disappointed with, I'd say Discworld. I've talked about why before, but basically it is one step too goofy for me to take any of it seriously. That was reading the first book, so I didn't give it a long effort, but the goofiness and the even more unexplained magical events left me unimpressed. I will say though - I'll always remember the explanation of the planet's makeup, which was something along the lines of "in an infinite universe, some setup like this was bound to happen by chance eventually. That's just where we are. It happened here." Love, love, love that idea.
  23. It is so confusing when people change their pictures, but I think I'm going to have to soon. About time it shifted from WoT to Stormlight Archive. I'll come back to Lan when I reread WoT I think.

  24. I consider the impersonation of others (and to a lesser extent the content) to show a lack of respect to the site and the members themselves. Chaos, I hold you in high regard as a moderator that takes the content quality of the site very seriously, so it left me a bit irked when it felt like you were disregarding this so easily as something that "fixed itself. " But you are right - that was a pot shot and I know it, and I'm disappointed in myself for stooping. It's regrettable when another person's joy comes at the cost of something that you enjoy when the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. I'm not enthusiastic about where certain things are headed, but I'll make an active effort to not come between another person and their enjoyment again. But that is coming from a less tired, and frankly less caring Bloodfalcon this morning. I'll gladly sacrifice my chatbox, as our hero Al'Lan Mandragoran would do, for the enjoyment of others. As a Site Issue, you can consider this resolved by me permanently resigning my chatbox.
  25. I can see that. People got pretty simple, pretty fast.
