That's true. And Dalinar did mention that soulcast food didn't taste very good, which is why the king brought food from the capital for his feasts.

Brandon just likes giving people swords. What epic fantasy fan wouldn't? after all, he gave all of his groomsmen swords at his wedding. I've seen pictures anyone else want to cut the cake with a sword?

Very good point, Argent. with 5 years to fully bond with the spren and learn her surges, no wonders she knows so much about soulcasting. And if her spren is as secreative as Syl and stopped playing pranks, Shallan never would have noticced anything until she knew the fabrial was a ruse. Jasnah does have trouble soulcasting organics, what would it take to learn that? more years of practice, or does she have the wrong paring of surges for that soulcasting ability?

Considering the old forum was the TWG (Time Wasters Guide), joining up due to boredom seems logical to me Welcome to the forum.

Joshstormblessed Brandon didn't finish reading the interlude at the signing, which might be why you didn't know what Eshonai's sister was working on. A complete transcription is found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cDGlSyePKuiyYb_e0yBHzTYCvvqQgoPweEh_EM3sRlE/mobilebasic?pli=1

(SPOILERS) Regarding Steelheart's weakness - Please prove me wrong
Mysty replied to Oculus's topic in The Reckoners
That would really be funny if he had to hide pain from stubbed toes to protect his weakness. Alas! we can't ask Steelheart that anymore. Of course anyone asking Steelheart if it hurts to stub your toe would end up very dead--along with their family and friends to be safe. -
New here, Dalinar Kholen Theory (Contains spoilers)
Mysty replied to chronotrigger's topic in Introduce Yourself!
That is a very interesting idea, although after hearing the discussion of the Nightwatcher in the Baxil interlude i was under the impression that you got the boon and the curse at the same time. However we have so little information about the Old Magic, so maybe delayed curses are possible.- 17 replies

That is a very astute observation name_here. I hope we hear more info on the foundry in Firefight. If Nighthawk is an Epic, maybe he is a friend of Prof and there are more epics secretly being good, prove the Faithful contingent right. if the foundry is in human control, maybe is based on the black market epic dna technology...though if it is, i'm not sure Steelheart would have let it into Newcago

You do realize that the more cons he attends the less time Brandon has to actually write the books? He did memtion in a writing excuses episode how surprised he was how little time he had for writing after he became an author. I understand the sentiment of wanting to see more Brandon, but with all the books he has in the works... we'll probably get more cosmere questioned answered with the publication of cosmere novels than with Q&A's where he does his best to be evasive with that teasing smile on his face

Shallan did write a letter in the beginning of WoK. starts on pg 137 of the paperback. it is her second attempt of pettitioning Jasnah for a wardship. however, i don't know of anything in that letter that remotely refers to that stone. Navani's notebook sounds much more reasonable, especially since it is possible she had seen the stone being Gavilar's wife.
-
I agree, but I was still hoping for a definate answer to the question. Brandon sure likes giving evasive answers!

Really? That's cool! I stumbled across the Graphic Audio copy of Warbreaker in my local Library and enjoyed it. It took me a bit of listening to start enjoying it, as i'm accustom to tradtitional audiobooks. At first I found the audible sighs, footsteps, and chatter of crowds distracting, but the longer i listened the more I was drawn into the story and the more I enjoyed the cinmatic feel. I'll have to watch out for it and compare with Michael Kramer's narration in the standard audiobook.

Welcome kattattack22! it's a whole new experience reading his books while knowing about the cosmere isn't it? His books are intricate by them selves, but the cosmere connection just brings the intricaies to a whole new level.

I just got back from the Steelheart signing tonight at Powell's Bookstore in Beaverton, OR. Brandon did two readings. The first was the parshendi interlude from WoR I've seen transcribed before. the second was the first chapter of the AoL sequel, which is in the Steelhunt vault if no one else has done a trasncription. Brandon elaborated on his state of mind when he got the seed for Steelheart when he was cut of in traffic. Apparently he was late for a signing, lost without GPS, with a dead phone. He had left a steak knife in his luggage, and in the confusion at airport security he left his laptop in the scanner bin. The laptop was the only way to charge his phone, nor did he remember anyone's phone number to call at a payphone. so it was under those stressor that when cut off he thought "good thing i'm not a supervillain otherwise I'd blow up your car". by the time Brandon got to the signing he was bubbling to his agent about this awesome new book idea who had to bring Brandon back to earth, "didn't you just sign the WoT contract? didn't you just fly to NY and pitch your 10 volume SLA series?" during the group Q&A someone ask Brandon why the general feel of Steelheart is so similar to Final Empire. He said that was due to his love of heist stories. A group of thieves tasking themselves to do the impossible is just one of his favorite types of stories. Knowing this, Brandon did conciously try to make Steelheart a different flavor of heist from FE. The following are the questions I asked from the Ultimate list of Questions. The answeres are all paraphrased from what I can remember Q: Is the Nightwatcher Cultivation or of Cultivation somehow? A: That is strongly hinted in the book. (would not give a direct answer, but I believe the answer is yes). Q: Are Shallan's "memories" a form of surgebinding? A: Good question! Shallan has something besides pure physiology aiding her when taking a memory. (some magic is involved, but would not say yes or no to surgebinging in particular) Q: Will Shallan and Hoid meet and have a battle of wits? A: Good question! I think you should read WoR and find out. Q: Is Baxil's Mistress destroying statues of the Herald Shallash? A: Yes. Actually in the prologe her statue is missing because Baxil's mistress came through. Q: Is Baxel's mistress Shallash? A: I'm not going to answer that. (I know this had been RAFO'ed before, but I wanted to give it another try since he answered the first) And a final note, Brandon is going to tweet a picture of me and my sister! My sister wore the Mistcloak she made for halloween and won the Steelheart signing poster. I wrote him a thank you note in Alethi Script which he thought was really neat (Thank you to whoever cracked that code and made it available on the Stormlight Wiki!) That's about it...oh, if you ever go to a signing with one of his former roommates, Make him go to the front of the line! the person Captain Conrad from HoA, even with the excuse of a young kid up past his bedtime, was hesitant to go to the front until Brandon stopped the siging and forcefully insisted. If you don't remember Captain Conrad, know that he died horribly, so be careful when you ask authors for a cameo appearance.

Overall, that was a well written story, good job. Were the family ghosts actually real or just a halucination? I imagine your mind could play lots of tricks on you after chopping off your own arm, which is when i began to question the ghosts actually talking, but even at the beginning he was suffering from grief, lonliness, and malnutritions at the beginning, so maybe he imagined his need to be there. Hunger Games really made me question the view points of crazy people. "desperate wheedling"--that phrase brought me out of the story because it seems oxymoronic. I've never thought of wheeling as something that can be done desperately. I was expecting to read "pleading".

(Spoiler) Firefight and Steelheart - what were Firefight's motives?
Mysty replied to Andrew C's topic in The Reckoners
SH may not have known it was FF herself that killed Fortuity. When she confessed that her name was Megan, and it wasn't connected to FF at all, I got the impression she never used her actual likeness or name around SH (p 327 of ebook). As for going along with the plan to take down SH rather than blowing cover and kiling the Reconners, the only thing I can think of is that while with the Reconers she didn't use her powers very often and therefore would have less epic- craziness clouding her mind. Maybe she was starting to heal mentally, but because of how long she had been clouded it just left her confused comming off, stuck halfway between human and epic sensibilities. Then again, she always got mad at David after he improptued something. Maybe everytime she was setting the Reconners up for failure to SH David threw a monkeywrench into the plan and she couldn't pull it off. In any case I'm sure the next book will cover this problem. -
Sigzil's master worldsinger master was Hoid, and the way in which Hoid shared that story with Kaladin was not something any human could do. There was sommething special there. Of course I don't think we don't have enough information to know if Hoid made that story come to life because of a surge from a special PR order of Radiants, or because of that flute he gave kaladin, or if it was just a special bag of tricks Hoid has collected through his world hopping, But I think it is possible. Hopefully in WoR we will learn more about worldsingers as bridge four tests Kaladin's windrunning abilities as Sigzil suggested.

9.30.13 - Two McMillion - Peter Endor, Chapter 1
Mysty replied to Two McMillion's topic in Reading Excuses
You can have that sort of dynamic work for much older characters. Ever read "the Thief" by Megan Whalen Turner? although not actually brothers, there are two characters with that type of dynamics in their relationship. the characters (older teens I guess) are apprenticed to the same man. the older apprentice is a landless noble who is pea green with envy for the other who is the son of a Duke and nephew to the childless King. the younger, who is too innocent for his own good, idolizes the older apprentice because he had seen more of the world and had better skills with a sword. Making both of the brothers older doesn't need to change the dynamics of the relationship. But you probably need to give Peter a healthy does of youthful innocence to make it a believable relationship. however, I don't know how innocent Peter can be if he is totally aware of and in control of all of his magical powers. Is it important for Peter to start so knowledgeable, rather than growing into it over the story? changing one little thing sure can have a domino effect, can't it? -
Sell, Vivenna gets sick when forced to touch Nightblood The King's Wit and Shallan will meet and have an epic battle of wits

I only just figured out what those are myself. they are Reputation points. if you think a post is funny, witty, helpful, or insightful, the green up arrow gives a reputation point. Underneath everyone's icon it says things like "trainee", "awakener", "mistborn", "shardbearer"...those represent your reputation level. so especially in deep theory threads, people with higher reputations could be considered more knowledgeable, as lots of people have agreed with them before. If on the other hand it was a really, really, really bad post you can remove a reputation point. you can go negative. I've seen a post with someone with -14 "Hoed" level; of course that person was also completely banned from the forum. I ran across a thread discussing it today...I'd been trying to figure it out since joining, thinking it was based on time or number of posts. maybe they should explain that in a "welcome to the forum" topic.

Welcome DLZ, glad to have another fan. there is a topic on which signing people will be attending and I remember someone posting they will attend multiple signings in the Chicago area. Go check out the thread, as I don't remember who it was. there is also another thread with a whole list of complied questions to ask Brandon somewhere...I think Chaos complied it. you'll have no shortage after reading that. and lastly, i'm rather new myself, but I haven't seen actual photos yet, usually clip art. but that doesn't mean you can't shake things up and be different.

9.30.13 - Two McMillion - Peter Endor, Chapter 1
Mysty replied to Two McMillion's topic in Reading Excuses
well, when you said he had a few million in his pocket, I imediately though this little boy was filthy rich, irregardless of the fact it was leftover lunch money. if you could infer with word choice that peter only has a "measly 3 million, not worth the effort" it might help give the sense that the economy is way different. world building details that highlight how this story is NOT what we live in now should help. i like the world building ideas. I'm excited to see where this story goes. -
That sounds similar to forging, which does work on the human body. and being from the same planet the powers are probably related. Maybe you could turn them on and off like the aon simbols on the walls for light.

Oh, so your economy has runaway inflation problems and society is high tech? How do you manage that?
