@Nitpicking Technically you don't have to, but these are some major spoilers for WaT, and it would be nice if they were spoiler. Also, the first point still stands. Surges were still less regulated at that time because of the situation of the Honor Shard, and so the heralds would have had at least less bound abilities and possible unbound. You're pointing out a meaningless distinction in word choice, when the effect is shown to be the same, and they used an assumption made for like 95% of the series. WaT Just because they got the reason wrong doesn't invalidate that particular argument at all, since the effect being used as evidence is directly seen, and it being caused by one thing or another doesn't change the essence of the argument. edit: Just reread you name and now I feel kinda dumb, but still^^^

Absolutely, it's vague and nebulous. In that particular case, I'd side against the parents, but it's really hard to make generalizations that say that's OK, but others are not, and I'll admit that cases like that and similar might get overlooked. (though still might argue that it violates pursuit of happiness of the children, and does not particularly protect any of the three essential rights I layed down, but that would be iffy) Keep in mind that this would be in an idealized society, and, knowing that life isn't perfect, and neither are the people in them, many of these can't be perfectly practiced, as humans would naturally take advantage of them. Sure, but if light weaving can essentially do exactly the same thing as soulcasting, but for cheaper, then there is no purpose in an entire surge, and that feels incredibly redundant, and not a narrative choice sando would make. I think it's something similar to windrunner's reverse lashing, where it's a combination of both, and also takes comparitively little stormlight, even compared to each of the other surges individually. (maybe not quite so comparitively little, but similar or less than such an advanced and complex lightweaving) Also, keep in mind that Shallan is Spoilers for late SA
