Szeth never seems to care how strong the enemy is. He's the best at what he does and he has a death wish. He's not careless but he doesn't really do research on the enemy either so I'll have to agree with Gloom on this one.

I think Gaz will resurface. He disappeared so quietly its difficult to consider him dead.

Yeah, I don't really see it as a possible scenario either, and I am very interested in seeing Renarin's growth in this next book.

Taking Kaladin's brotherly love for Tien and changing it to suit this view seems very wrong. Kaladin is all about protecting those who resemble Tien. We've been in Kaladin's mind for most of WoK and seen nothing other than the desire to help those people who cannot help themselves. And Kaladin has had several female interests, so I don't really see anything sparking any kind of love for Renarin at all. Especially since Renarin is a lighteyes. There might be an unrequited love from Renarin's side, but I do not see Kaladin reciprocating it. Even the idea of Renarin liking guys is iffy since it seems to be mostly based on his weakness. Being thoughtful and intelligent doesn't really convince one of that at all, and Renarin's desire to fight and help his family shows that the only thing that seems to hinder him from doing so is his weakness. Tbh, I would not really enjoy dedicating myself to a 10 book series only to find out this kind of sexual information later on. If Renarin is into guys I'd like to find out asap so I can make peace and decide how I feel about it. And Kaladin being into guys could really change everything. Since we don't know much about Renarin, it'd be ok for him, but we've been emotionally invested in Kaladin's journey and progress, and to not mention something important like that when a lot of people's enjoyment of the story is hinged on this character could be seen as a bit of a deception/betrayal and people might lose interest in the story and decide its not worth their time anymore.

Is there anything wrong with Shardplate?
Fistsofrage replied to Daishi5's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well Tanavast blames Odium for killing him, so I'm inclined to believe that they had a confrontation and Honor lost. Perhaps the fall of the Heralds and the radiants weakened him, but it was Odium who landed the fatal blow. -

Honor was happily surprised by the formation of the radiants. So I don't think their disbanding could have killed him since he didn't form them or the nahel bond and spren seem to have existed before Honor ever came to Roshar. -
I think that Taln's presence is evidence that darkness dude's attempts to prevent the final desolation have failed. I don't really see Taln playing a huge role in WOR, like helping Kaladin because it seems to be too early in the series for our MCs to be getting easy answers. Their struggles to find the truth is our entertainment, and as badass as it would be for Kaladin to learn from the last honorable and legitimate Herald, it seems too much too soon.

@Marianmi: the Renarin anf Adolin combo is a beautiful scenario. It's always good to see brotherly love prevail

Well, I'm going to hold judgement until I see what Renarin can do in that suit of shard plate. It's supposedly going to remove the disadvantages of his weakness, but it remains to be seen if Renarin is capable of being a warrior.

There is a "builder" radiant classification. ..if the blades/plate can be made, perhaps this has something to do with it...
-
Well hopefully we'll gain some insight into Renarin's thoughts and find out what kind of person he is. A Renarin pov in WOR would go a long way towards that end.

What makes the Honorblades more powerful? (spoilers)
Fistsofrage replied to Two McMillion's topic in Stormlight Archive
So Tanavast survived, did somethings as a mortal and then was killed by Odium? Not sure I'm interpreting this correctly...- 41 replies

What makes the Honorblades more powerful? (spoilers)
Fistsofrage replied to Two McMillion's topic in Stormlight Archive
What kind of benefits did the oathpact give them that they would endure something like damnation? There is too much that we don't know and it makes it difficult to make any conclusions, but I will stick by my wariness of the honor blades. They are not as convient as people seem to believe. If the ideals are necessary for Radiants to obtain the true power, then perhaps the Oathpact played a similar role for the Heralds. My point in saying this is that just having the honor blade probably won't provide the holder with extra powers unless they are under the Oathpact. So the theory attributing Szeth's powers to an honor blade is probably unlikely. Szeth is truthless after all, he has sworn no pact nor said any ideals.- 41 replies

Fistsofrage replied to Two McMillion's topic in Stormlight Archive
We are not provided with enough information to determine what the Oathpact is, but we are given enough to be wary of the honor blades. They are undeniably connected to the purgatory. I am questioning whether they can be safely used by non-Herald's with absolutely no consequences. That seems absurd to me, the blades do not come for free, there is a price. The purgatory seems to be a suitable price to me, but it might not to you. I do not pretend to understand the long life spans of the Heralds, I don't even know how they were chosen. However, that doesn't make the purgatory theory any less viable, especially if the Heralds are indeed human. Although, you are correct that the Heralds were sent purgatory whether they died or not (as long as they hsd the blades) which is even more troubling, and yet another reason why the blades are mysterious and dangerous.- 41 replies

I'm glad lol. I really like the idea of the Heralds responding differently to the discarding of their honor blades. They're all broken in different ways, and it seems very interesting.

@Gloom: It's just a general rule of mine since I read a lot of fantasy. I'm sure Brandon does his best, but there will always be discrepancies. If he spent too much time making sure all the physics added up, he'd never get his books out as fast as he does.

Since the Heralds have been alive all this time, I predict that one or more of them had a role in the Knights Radiant disbanding. Probably the darkness dude since he seems dedicated to preventing desolations by preventing the spren-human bond.

I'm seeing a lot of calculations lol, but you guys seem to forget that Szeth can control the way gravity acts on his body. He can make himself light. And if riding the highstorm is possible (probably the fastest method of travel), then I think lashing from point in the sky really fast is possible too. And I don't tend to compare fantasy books with reality too much since everything tends to fall apart and it ruins the experience. Forgive me if my reply didn't properly address your posts, I'm in the middle of something atm

Fistsofrage replied to Two McMillion's topic in Stormlight Archive
We know that discarding the honor blades is what prevented the Heralds from joining Taln in purgatory. The honor blades are key. So if someone else picks up one of the blades, its natural to assume that they have picked up the curse (or w.e you want to call it) with the blade. The blades are not as desirable as people tend to make them appear, there is a huge weight/responsibility/curse that apparently broke even Jezrien.- 41 replies

You make some good points, but since I don't know how long it takes to lash across the sky (or zoom) Im not sure I would rule it out just yet. I would have to go back and check but I think (basic lashing?) costs the least amount of stormlight. I guess we'll just have to wait and see but I think it explains how Szeth is able to travel so quickly.

I don't know that Szeth hasn't learned how to fly/travel via lashings. He has gone to so many countries, and killed so many influential people in such a short period of time that it wouldn't be wrong to assume that he can use his abilities in that fashion. When Kaladin saw him in his dream, Szeth was in such a far off place I figured he could fly. However, I don't know if Szeth knows how to ride the highstorm. I think lashing a point and lashing the storm are two different things and require a different level of skill but maybe that's just me.

It does seem that way, and you're most likely right, but the way Kaladin rode the storm in his dream/out-of-body experience makes it seem like he was either born for this, or a "true" lashing allows one to even ride storms. True lashing just means a total mastery of the 3 that allows one to do such things. Perhaps its the technique that gives windrunners their name. Maybe being able to do it proves mastery...
