I think a lot of the reason we hate this is due to every human being at least slightly asymmetrical. When you see yourself in the mirror, you're reflected, and that's what your brain has latched on to as "what I look like." But in pictures, you're not reversed, and you get an Uncanny Valley effect from your own face.
I've seen this same issue in Zoom and Discord video calls where for whatever reason, your own image doesn't start out mirrored. It's DISTURBING until you can flip it back to "correct."
