Mid-Range Game 4: The Alethi War of Unification
Wyrmhero replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
There are indeed 10 hours left in the Cycle More clarifications: Actions that affect a player that can be seen by a Watchman are Role abilities, Shardblade kills, and Sabotages. This is regardless of whether or not they die in the battle, or if they are saved by a Guardsman etc. Surgeon Roles will save someone before the Guardsman is needed. If two Guardsman protect the same person, then one is randomly selected to save them. The order of actions is Officers, Scout, Watchman, Surgeon, Guardsmen, Sabotages, Squad Leader, Votes (including Lighteyed Vote), Shardblades, Messenger, Lynches, Lighteyed Combat-skip, Combat. Note that a Watchman can see the Officer roleblocking still, it's just that Watchmen can be roleblocked by them first. A Scout cannot be Sabotaged when they use their ability. It does not count as skipping a Combat. A Spy who kills the Wit via Sabotage loses nothing. A Spy that first-votes for the Wit will lose their Role, and if they are Lighteyed, they become Darkeyed and can be targeted by Squad Leaders or Officers, and they cannot use the Lighteyed vote or skip a battle. They will however retain their doc access and their ability to Sabotage. If a Shardbearer kills the Wit, then they will also be treated as Darkeyed Spearman, despite keeping their Shardblade. Players Sabotaged during a Highstorm are carried through to the next Combat's list. Very dangerous if it happens to be a Battle the next Cycle . If Scouts use their Role on a Cycle they would be lynched, then it is indeed impossible to save them. If a player is both lynched and chosen from the possible-kill list in the same Cycle, then they will need two layers of protection to save them. The same is true of someone who is on the kill list multiple times during a Battle. Each 'death' uses up a protection attempt. Spies have an Eliminator doc per pair, and they do not know the identity of the other teams. When a Spy dies, their Spanreed will be randomly distributed to a player. The Spy and that player can then send messages through a new doc to each other, anonymously. It is possible for that player to be another Spy, or even to be the teammate themselves. It's not as if Dalinar knows who the Spies are .- 611 replies

Mid-Range Game 4: The Alethi War of Unification
Wyrmhero replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Assorted clarifications: The Officer's roleblock on a Darkeyes can stop the player from being Sabotaged. Therefore, they will not be on the list from that team in the first place, and hence they won't be one of the choices, unless they skipped the previous battle or another team has it out for them. The Officer's roleblock can stop any Role, Spy or Shardblade action. They cannot stop messages in progress. They can roleblock the Scout, and they do affect Heterochromics. Heterochromics have a Lighteyed Role (Wit, Surgeon, Officer or Swordsman) but do not get to take part in the Lighteyed vote or skip battles. The Wit's death in battle has no effect on the Spy who Sabotaged him. Guardsmen cannot protect themselves. They require a Knight Radiant for that. Also, somehow I forgot to mention the more important things... The army must kill all the Spies for a Good win. The Spies must collectively outnumber the other players for a joint Evil win. There must be two votes on a player for them to be lynched, and tied votes will prevent the lynch from happening. A tie in the Lighteyed vote will mean that Dalinar will be indecisive and abstain from voting.- 611 replies

Mid-Range Game 4: The Alethi War of Unification
Wyrmhero replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
At the end of each Combat, someone off the list will die. Everyone who took part in that battle (so everyone except Lighteyes who skipped it) will then have their equipment replaced and be removed from the list of possible deaths. Surviving a death will also remove you from the list. The only time someone is carried over to the next Cycle is if they skip a combat. If a player is selected twice by Eliminators before they take part in a battle (so a Lighteyes skips a battle and is Sabotaged twice in a row, or multiple teams select the same person for Sabotage), then they will have two entries on the list, and thus twice the chance of dying in a Skirmish.- 611 replies

Mid-Range Game 4: The Alethi War of Unification
Wyrmhero replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
It isn't important, I was just curious as to how long it'd take for someone to ask . It hints towards there being a Highstorm in the future, but you all already knew there was one coming anyway. Aside from clarifications, all the rules are in the first post. And yes, the information drop on death will also include the team the spy belongs to - I classify that under Alignment.- 611 replies

Mid-Range Game 4: The Alethi War of Unification
Wyrmhero replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
There will only be one kill per Skirmish due to the Eliminator teams. Each Cycle, every Eliminator team can choose a player to add to the potential deaths this Cycle. The player killed in this way during a Skirmish will be chosen at random from all the players chosen in this way. Note that if a player is chosen twice by an Eliminator team, they will have twice the chance to die. Eliminators on this list who are facing their own army will be ignored. In a Battle, all viable targets chosen by Eliminator teams will die.- 611 replies

Mid-Range Game 4: The Alethi War of Unification
Wyrmhero replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Week 1 The Blackthorn held a hand to his side, where his Shardplate had been cracked. He realised what he was doing shortly after, and removed it quickly. It wouldn't do for his troops to see him in pain, after all. Not that there was much pain, he just felt more sore than anything, where the blow had crushed into his ribcage but been stopped from doing anything more than bruising by his armour. He spoke to no-one as he stalked back towards his tent, flanked by his officers and a few Darkeyed attendants. As he walked, the Darkeyes started to undo the straps of his Shardplate, carefully removing it without forcing him to break stride. They had a hard time of it, thanks to his long stride and unrelenting pace, but he didn't give them a chance to slow down. Initial estimates of their losses were of around a twentieth of Dalinar's division of the army. It wasn't even a particularly large skirmish, they had just been ambushed. They had not retreated, and had in fact rallied themselves and fought back at their foe and chased them off, but it had cost them far too much. They couldn't fight a war with casualties of this number. And the storming Shardplate wearer they had fought had retreated, even if he had to leave his Shardhammer behind to do so. It was a loss, no matter how you looked at it. His armour now peeled off and taken away for repairs, he stepped into the strategy tent, where a handful more Brightlords stood, perusing a map of the surrounding countryside. Those that followed him here fanned out, so that each could have an unrestricted view of the map. He glared at the strategists stood opposite him. He spent his tenth heartbeat, and as he brought his arm down towards the map, his Shardblade appeared, great blade piercing through the map and table beneath it at an angle, centred on the battlefield he had just come from. "They knew." He kept his voice level as he could, but it still betrayed the rage he felt behind his exterior. Silence reigned in the tent, as all eyes were drawn to the centrepiece of the room. Not one Brightlord, nor the women scribing for them, wished to look towards their commander, fearful that he might lash out at them. The Blackthorn's rage was legendary. "Well?" He asked, raising his voice and sweeping his hand out, letting go of his Shardblade. It remained there, not yet disappearing. "Who has been selling our secrets?!" He looked in particular towards Brightlord Kaddar, who had suggested this particular plan. The man retreated back, like a rockbud in the dry season. "I-I don't know how this could have happened, my prince. The suggestion came directly from Brightlord Sadeas-" Dalinar clenched his fist and unclenched it a few times, staring the man down. "Are you suggesting that Sadeas has betrayed us?" "No, my prince," the man replied quickly, withering under his gaze. "Perhaps Brightlord Jain could elaborate a little," Brightlord Jost suggested. "He was the one in charge of troop movements, after all." "Or perhaps you decided to leak our plans, Brightlord Jost," Brightlord Jain snapped, clearly angry at the notion that he could be a traitor. "Accusing each other like this will not achieve anything. It may not even be any of us who are responsible. Our scouts could be spies, reporting our movements back whenever they leave the camp." He grimmaced as a thought occurred to him. "Damnation, all they need is a spanreed. Anyone could be responsible. It wouldn't surprise me if our enemies would be so impious as to teach men to write for that purpose." Dalinar looked to Brightlord Jain. "So what would you suggest? Turn the camp inside-out searching for spanreeds? I'm doubtful that would help, as owning one would only be suspicious for a Darkeyes." "You're right, my prince," Brightlord Jost said, looking up from the map nodding.. "Perhaps the troops have seen something suspicious instead? We can simply gather information from them, and see if that reveals anything." "That would destroy our troops' morale and any sense of camaraderie between them," Macen disagreed. "They could not fight beside anyone that they suspect of trying to secretly kill them." He shook his head. "I cannot condone such a course of action. "With respect, Ace," Brightlord Jost said, in a tone that suggested anything but, "I don't think that we have much of a choice. We could perhaps simply not tell them that we are searching for this sort of thing. Rather than execute the spies, we can just put them in a position where they will as good as die. At the very least, if they are not guilty of such a crime in the Almighty's eyes, then they will serve a purpose rather than being needlessly killed." "Why, Brightlord Jost, I've never heard such a joke. Imagine you having a conscience. Were you applying for the position of the King's Wit? Because if so, I may just be willing to suffer the penalty for killing you." "If you wish to duel me, Ace, then I'm willing to face you as soon as you have the guts to challenge me." "Enough," Dalinar grumbled, banging on the wooden table for attention. He tapped the table with his fingers, letting his Shardblade finally disappear. "I want you to go out and talk to the Darkeyed troops. Report anything suspicious to me. We will discuss this again this time next week. Maybe then, things will be clearer." At the end of the Cycle, there will be a Skirmish with Prince Vamah. It is Raining. This Cycle will end at 8PM GMT on Tuesday. Minor clarifications: Messengers only get their PM at the end of the Cycle, in case an Officer roleblocks them. Surgeons cannot target themselves. Players can use all actions available to them each Cycle. This includes Roles, Spy abilities, Lighteyed Vote (which is not an action) and Shardblades (though Shardblade and Spy abilities are mutually exclusive as a Spy cannot have a Shardblade). There may or may not be missing Roles. The Heterochromic does not get to take part in the Lighteyed vote. The number of Eliminator teams is hidden. Oh, I need one Eliminator per team to send in the Sabotage order via PM. Just telling me in the doc is not enough to qualify.- 611 replies

A reminder, the game will start in just under 28 hours. And as a clarification: You must post to be considered active. Sending in orders or responding to PMs is not enough to qualify as active. However, you don't need to vote to be considered active either, just post in the thread.- 611 replies

Not quite. During a Battle, the player with the most votes will be lynched, and each player the Eliminator teams choose (one per team) will die. Lighteyes cannot skip a battle in which they would be lynched.- 611 replies

Point of order, the prizes weren't what turned it around. They helped by making it slightly shorter, but the Village would still have turned it around due to the number of role blocks we had. But you're right that they tend to be met with negative feedback, particularly since they're highly dependent on your timezone as well.

Mid-Range Game 4: The Alethi War of Unification
Wyrmhero replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
The Shardblade is an unblockable kill action. Only players loyal to Dalinar can obtain one. If that player dies, then the Shardblade is removed from the game. A player who obtains a Shardblade is publicly known, and they become a Lighteyes, though they keep their Role.- 611 replies

Good news, you managed to get a job in the finest army this nation has seen or will ever see, under the just Gavilar and his powerful brother Dalinar! Fight for the unity of all Alethkar! Fight for glory! Fight for riches! Fight for Shardblades! ...But it's not that simple. It never is. Hidden in within your army are spies and saboteurs – And not just from one Brightlord's army either! All you know is that the spies have been sent into your army in pairs to ensure secrecy, and that they're from several different armies. Even worse, you've not fought with most of the people around you before, and rare is the soldier who can vouch for someone else here. You don't even know what their job is around the camp, though you can probably guess in some cases. It will take careful thought and cooperation to find the ones that might be secretly planning your deaths... General Rules Events Spies Eye Colour Roles So, welcome to my second game. As before, I will answer any questions on the main thread, so feel free to throw them at me if you want anything clarified. If there are not as many players as I would like, some Role(s) may be left out. Some (Guardsman and Messenger) have also been slightly modified from previous iterations as well. The game will start Sunday 30th, at 8PM GMT. Cycles will last 48 hours each. Quick Links:

Indeed, it was a fun game. Thanks for running it Joe. Shame I died so early on, but kind of made sense considering. Shame I never got to use my hit squad. Would've loved to be Hoid in that position though .

Players who gain Shardblades keep their Roles, they just become Lighteyes and can skip one combat a game, and can try to convince the Blackthorn to vote. Shadblades can be used every Cycle. If a Shardblade goes to the Blackthorn, it is removed from the game, so probably a good idea to protect someone who has it. Spies can only be confirmed through his death, or potentially a Watchman if only one person uses an ability on them (Spy Sabotage) and they die in the combat.
-
So, I've updated the rules for my Mid-Range game based on the Alethi War of Unification, removing almost all the random and mathsy elements from it to make it simpler. Balancing this may be a little difficult though, so help would be appreciated with the roles, mostly. General Rules Each player is a member of The Blackthorn's army, and has their own position in the camp. Each cycle, four things things happen. The players are notified of this cycle's Event at the start of the day. The Blackthorn calls together his most trusted people and asks who they believe is a Spy. That player is placed at the vanguard of the army in next battle to prove their valour, and will almost certainly die during it. Combat occurs, unless there is a Highstorm. The player with the most votes, and one of the players chosen by an Eliminator will die, unlesss saved somehow. A Lighteyes cannot avoid a battle that they would be in the vanguard for. If there is no battle this cycle due to a Highstorm, they will instead be forced to take a walk in it, and cannot be saved. Any player that fails to report for their shift (by not posting) for two cycles in a row will be executed. Cycles last for 48 hours. A player may use all possible actions in one cycle - Lighteyed Vote, Role Actions, Spy Actions and Shardblade Kills. Events At the end of each cycle, one of three things will happen: A Highstorm (20%), a Skirmish (60%), or a Battle (20%). You will be told which will happen at the start of the Cycle. During a Highstorm, no actions may be taken at all. Voting will still occur, however, and so the lynch will still take place. In fact, the player lynched at this time can’t be saved by anything and will definitely die. During a Skirmish, one of the players chosen by the Eliminator teams will die, chosen at random. After this, protective roles will be applied to see if they die. A Battle is similar to a Skirmish, except all the players chosen by the teams will die. A player loyal to Dalinar will publicly win a Shardblade. If they are not a Lighteyes, they will become one, with all the privileges that grants. If they die, the Shardblade goes to The Blackthorn. A Shardblade can be used to kill a player, even if protected by a Surgeon. A Spy cannot be killed during combat with their own faction's army. Spies There are a number of spies, all working in pairs, from different armies. They do not know the identity of spies from other armies. Spies may be of any eye colour and may have any role. The spies all win together, providing their faction survives. A doc symbolises their Spanreed. If one of the Eliminators dies, a random player will gain the other Spanreed. Messages may be sent using these spanreeds anonymously, via the GM. During each Cycle, each Eliminator team chooses a player to sabotage in the coming battle. During the next combat they take part in, a random player chosen this way will die, whether that combat is this Cycle or the next. Eye Colour Each player will have one of the eye colours below, and that will define which Role they have. The eye colour of each player will be known at the beginning of the game. There will be many more Darkeyes than Lighteyes, and only one Heterochromeric, who will be hidden amongst the list of Darkeyes. Darkeyes have no special abilities (isn't it sad?). Lighteyes may secretly send a PM to the GM once per cycle containing the name of a player. The player with the most votes from this secret ballot will have an additional vote placed against them (The Blackthorn’s). They may also choose, once per game, to skip this Cycle's combat. Heterochromics are Darkeyes with a Lighteyes role. They are grouped under Darkeyes. Roles Spearmen [Darkeyes] are simple soldiers in the army, each hoping to with a Shardblade and rise to the ranks of the Lighteyes. Watchmen [Darkeyes] keep an eye out each Cycle on a player, and will be informed of a random player whose action(s) affected that player that Cycle. Messengers [Darkeyes] are able to start a PM chain between themselves and one other player, but only to one new person per cycle. The PM is set up by the GM. When a new PM starts, the old one must not be continued (but it is not necessary for either player to delete it). Scouts [Darkeyes] can leave camp on every even-numbered Cycle to scout ahead, and are unable to be targeted by actions when doing so. They may not use any of their own actions when doing this, however. Their vote is not counted, but they can still be lynched. They cannot use this ability when there is a Highstorm. Guardsmen [Darkeyes] can choose another player to protect each combat. If that player would die in the battle, they will survive, but the Guardsman will die instead, and cannot be saved. This does not protect from Shardblades, but does from a lynch. Squad Leaders [Darkeyes] have more sway within the group than most. They can choose to silence a Darkeyed player’s vote each Cycle. Swordsmen [Lighteyes] are more extravagant, wealthy soldiers. They have no special role in the army, but at least they're not Darkeyed. Surgeons [Lighteyes] can choose another player each cycle, and that player will be saved if they die via a lynch or combat (but not by Shardblade). Officers [Lighteyes] are able to order Darkeyes around without question, and can stop one taking any meaningful actions over a Cycle. The King's Wit [Lighteyes] is a safe role, and wins a personal victory if they are either lynched (and die) or if they are killed by a Shardblader, as long as Dalinar’s forces also win in the end. The player that killed them or voted for them first will lose their role (but not their Shardblade or Spanreed, if they have one), and if they are a Lighteyes, they will be treated as a Darkeyes for the rest of the game. Mostly, looking closely at the Darkeyed Roles, since they can be a little more complicated. Probably also need a few more Guardsmen than you'd normally expect due to the Dark/Lighteyed thing being publicly known. Not all roles will be present if there aren't enough players, but I'm not quite sure what I would take out or what the numbers would need to be.

The best thing to do would be to assume that the laws of physics are all the same to start with, and that Investiture stuff is put on top of that. There's no reason to assume otherwise, as we haven't found any evidence for the laws of physics being different elsewhere in our universe either. It makes sense that to get a 'working' universe, we need those laws. So let's assume the same thing there. Now, the issue comes from when we start to use Investiture to drive physical changes. Like any system of magic, a magical source is similar to energy, and is basically the same. Is Investiture conserved though? Well, we know it can be 'destroyed' through interactions with Nightblood and Hemalurgy. That could be considered converting it to energy. But at the same time, it could just be returning to the source. Then there's the curious interactions with Allomancy, and the 'waterwheel' style of how the Allomancy is not used up but just returns to Preservation and then comes back to the user. I don't think we know enough about it yet to think about it like that. However, the nature of it, and whether it is indeed a catalyst or a resource, does imply interesting things. Could you use it to easily generate a functionally infinite amount of energy? Or even an infinite amount? Well, perhaps. We have no indication that Awakened objects slowly die off, for instance, using up their Investiture. They could even be used to power our LSC (I choose to collide Spren), making it a lot easier to look at the tiniest things in the universe. Basically, not sure we know enough about how the Cosmere works yet to tell exactly how things would work with that. Or even if there's a quanta of Investiture. Who knows, perhaps in a world with Cognitive/Spiritual aspects, just smashing hadrons together might hint towards that sort of world. Of course, people would smash Investiture together anyway, because what else are physicists meant to do? >>

Hoid was right. They needed to band together, not to fight each other like this. There were more important things than the petty grudges that the Seventeenth Shard had against him. They had to stop the destructive forces that were rampaging across the Cosmere, and Hoid was the only one who could do it. They had to- Then Aonar shot him in the back, and he woke up. A hand went behind him to feel for the wound. But it wasn't there. It was never there. Sometimes he wished he could rip that storming allomantic-electrum spike out of him, but it was too late, and in too deep for him to do so. He didn't have feruchemical gold yet, sadly, so it wasn't as though he could heal his body as he extracted it. But if not him this time around, then who was it? There were so many targets for him to choose from, but which would it be? One of his old friends? Was the delusion of Aonar shooting him more of a vision than he'd care to admit? Or what about Aili? That sword of hers would be rather dangerous, after all. Or the mysterious 'M', who had called him out before? Perhaps Jain, who was so trusting just the previous day? Of course, that didn't include the possibilities that someone had told Hoid about their specialist skills, and that he had decided he needed those rather than the people behind them. It was just too difficult to say, and his growing paranoia wasn't helping. I asked in a PM, and just basically got that it was a gut feeling. Speaking of PMs, now should be the time for our Letter Bearer to start piecing together intel from PMs and start checking which roles people have if they have claimed it publicly. They should also probably get into contact and reveal themselves to our Renegade, assuming they trust them, since they need the intel badly. Perhaps also getting into contact with the Researcher too, but that doesn't need to happen as long as our Researcher is telling someone else about what they found. For the moment, I'm going to hold back on voting. I'll see what is said a little later on, hopefully some others will post before I leave for the night. ...They are 24 hours long, right? When does this Cycle end? Edit: Also, turns out I've been saying gold, when I mean electrum >>.

Another vision. This made three hundred and seventy-four. He'd died in each and every one, as well. Sometimes it took him seconds, and in others it took minutes. And each time, he felt the pain, as though the knife was real, as though the bullet was real, as though the rending claw of the Chasmfiend was real. His hand subconsciously went under his shirt to itch the spike responsible for this, his allomantic electrum spike. He shook his head to ward away the illness he felt from his most recent death, and picked up the book he had at his side. It was his personal notebook, and it contained all the information he had gathered on the subject of hemalurgy. Of course, he was the test subject in all of these experiments. He scoured his notes for a reason for it, his eyes drifting up at times as voices were raised. Aonar, Sarams, Lucy, Ren- no, not Ren. Not in this vision. Was it a vision? He couldn't tell. Sometimes it became difficult to say what was reality, and what was merely the possibility being laid out before him. Aonar's jaunt through time wasn't helping either. It was playing tricks on his mind, messing with his allomantic electrum's ability to see the future. Or maybe other aspects of hemalurgy were. He'd been feeling this way for longer than he had been back at this time, after all. His notes indicated that it weakened your mind, made you more susceptible to Ruin. But Ruin was no longer alive. Except, was he now? He didn't know. Either way, it didn't matter. The one who called himself 'M' didn't seem to like him. That wasn't too surprising. He kept himself to himself mostly, and he had voiced an opinion out of nowhere, as well. "I never said that we should not discuss what to do, only if we want to commit ourselves this early." He shook his head. "If my opinions are not wanted, then I could just not voice them. Though I suppose it's interesting that Hadrian was apparently only half-listening..." I'm glad that someone is discussing my idea for the roleclaim. My thoughts about that was whether or not it was more beneficial to have these things out in the open or not, considering we can keep an eye on certain players, and gain a lot of information. It could, however, as you say, lead us down the wrong path if there are duplicate roles. As I say, we need to discuss this more before we commit to it. Also, can people stop replying when I'm trying to reply? Keep having to check things again >>.

Sorry, woke up rather late and don't have much time to say anything before I head off for the rest of the morning and all afternoon. I'll RP a bit when I get back. Vote-wise, I would flag up Mailliw, but he's having difficulty logging into the site apparently, so... Where is the last of the Sharders? Where is Satrams? However, I will just put something up for discussion - whether it's best to actually lynch someone or not in this game. Considering there is just one person on the Evil side, we would have to get extraordinarily lucky to get them on the first day, when we have no evidence at all. We are almost guaranteed to kill an innocent. However, I guess that since Hoid can't kill, that also means we won't really have any evidence the next day either... What do other people think? For that matter, would a mass roleclaim be of use? It would drastically reduce the number of places where Hoid can hide (as he would probably need to hide in the powerless lot, or risk claiming a role someone else already has), and while it does mean he has information about who to go for, we would already be highly wary of the people with roles and the possibility of them being subverted anyway. Again, just putting this up for discussion.
