  1. Yep, Hoid has Feruchemy. Welcome to the forums, by the way!
  2. The first time I saw fog (a rare occurrence in tropical countries like the Philippines) was when I was eight years old during our family's first trip to the mountain city of Baguio. That childhood memory of being inside a thick mysterious mist came back to me when I read Mistborn more than five years ago, and is part of what made me a Sanderson fan. I've been to Baguio and Tagaytay (another mountain city in the Philippines) a few times since then, but never again did I experience that (to my airsick lowlander mind) alien beauty. Until now. My little sister decided to celebrate her birthday over the weekend in one of the highest parts of Tagaytay, and while there wasn't anything special when we arrived here last night, I was greeted by this sight the first thing in the morning. My first thought was "Mist!" My second thought was, "Oh, no! It's 10AM already, so this must be the Deepness!" And soon enough, after a delicious brunch, I saw the dreaded dark mists of Ruin. I'd never been happier to see the power of destruction manifest itself in gaseous form. Then as we drove back to our hotel room, a thick fog greatly reduced the visibility on the road. It was a bit worrisome, but I decided to tough it out. After all, as the Lord of the Mists said, the Mists hide us, protect us, and give us power.
  3. I thought of another problem regarding matter-Stormlight Soulcasting. If only a Soulcasting fabrial is used, how would the user collect the resulting Stormlight? It would probably just dissipate away. I'm not even sure a Surgebinder could infuse himself with Stormlight that is in the air instead of on a gemstone (though he might, since Kaladin gained Stormlight directly from the Invested air of a highstorm). Perhaps if there's a gemstone near the transformed object (e.g. the Soulcaster fabrial's gemstone), it might manage to attract at least some of the Stormlight. *shrugs*
  4. From HoA: The Cosmere, like the real world, has matter-energy equivalence. This is why the power of creation can exist as matter and as energy (and also as Cognitive attributes and perhaps other things as well; the equivalence is actually broadened in the Cosmere). So theoretically speaking, matter should be able to transform into Stormlight. Or not so theoretically, since Lift is already able to perform this transformation on food. But since we're talking about Soulcasters, I'd like to point out two problems: First, we don't know how much Stormlight a Soulcaster would need to transform matter into Stormlight. It would be impractical if they end up using more Stormlight than they'll produce. Second, we also don't know which type of gemstone they would use to transform something to Stormlight. I'd guess diamonds, as Navani had light fabrials in WoR made of diamond. But then, I could be wrong, since neither light nor any form of energy is listed under the Soulcasting properties of diamond/Lucentia.
  5. The point of the "Spiritual Realm is not Location-based" idea is that physical distances are not important in the Spiritual Realm. I don't think anyone (except maybe the Iriali) are claiming that all objects in the Cosmere have just one Spiritual aspect. That would clearly contradict Shai's lesson that all objects have their own souls. Bust just because everything has its own soul doesn't mean their souls need to be as far away from each other in the Spiritual Realm as their physical aspects are in the Physical Realm. Remember, the Shardworlds are basically adjacent in the Cognitive Realm, so clearly the concept of distance differs outside of the Physical. Imagine two pieces of string. One end of each string is attached to the ceiling while the other end hangs freely (or attached to a stretchable piece of cloth). You can think of the two moving ends as the Physical aspects of two objects, and the ends attached to the ceiling as their Spiritual aspects. No matter how far their Physical aspects move from each other, their Spiritual aspects remain in the same place. From the perspective of the Spiritual Realm, their Physical distance doesn't matter. Fixed that for you. You were saying that the Spiritual Realm isn't governed by mandates (a claim that I'll address in a bit), so that just leaves the Cognitive and the Physical. Anyway, I agree with half of that statement. Intent, or the mandate of a sentient mind upon Invested power, is intuitively a Cognitive thing (as intent is formed in the mind). But intent (or indeed, any thought) cannot exist without ideals, which from Shai (and, incidentally, Plato) we know are Spiritual. Ideal Investiture (or "true Investiture") may not be governed by the dynamic thoughts of a mind, but it's obviously governed by its own Ideals.
  6. Hi Becky! Welcome to the craziness. As a fellow nerdy, introverted Sanderson fan, I invite you to check out the Cosmere theory discussions and perhaps contribute to the Coppermind wiki. I hope you have lots of fun. Brandon says that Warbreaker's planned sequel, Nightblood, will still have Vasher and Vivenna as main characters, at least, so it seems you'll be getting what you wished for! Oh, and if you're looking for a good non-Cosmere book by Sanderson, I highly recommend The Rithmatist. It's standalone (at least for now; there is a planned sequel called The Aztlanian with the same main characters). The setting is in my opinion a very interesting take on the alternate Earth idea. Also, the main protagonist is a nerd, which is obviously the best kind of main protagonist. When not an Ookla, I am known here as skaa. We'll revert to our usual usernames next week. See you around!
  7. I agree. Lerasium Hemalurgy is probably not the source of Feruchemy, and lerasium can't be as versatile as atium in Hemalurgy. I recently thought of the possibility that using a lerasium spike in Hemalurgy turns one's victims into mistwraiths instead of killing them, but I don't know how that would work Realmatically. Like, which attribute does one remove to turn a normal Scadrian into a non-sentient blob?
  8. Let's outline the possibilities for the nature of "trellium": It is the god metal of an alien ShardIt is Autonomy's god metal. This has a good chance of being true, not just because of the freedom theme of Paalm's polemic, but also because of spoilery stuff that I can't discuss here right now. Some of you already know the two things I'm thinking of. It is Odium's god metal. Because Paalm hates stuff, and because the "VISITOR from other WORLDS" looks vaguely like a Voidbringer. It is Dominion's god metal. Here's a thread showing a bunch of arguments for that. It is a god metal containing an unholy combination of Autonomy, Odium, and Dominion's powers. Nightmare fuel. Fortunately, there is no evidence of this. It is some other Shard's god metal. No evidence of this so far. It is a god metal containing Sazed's power. This appeals to me because of the Ruin-like characteristics of "trellium", as I noted in this thread's original post. It's Sazed's but he doesn't know it (as MeLaan said).Sazed produced a Splinter of Ruin that is now doing mischief without Sazed's knowledge. No longer likely because of the WoB I gave above. Some other Shard or a Splinter thereof managed to find where Sazed was hiding his extra bit of Ruin's power and used it to hack the Scadrian magic system, allowing him to create a heretofore unknown god metal without explicitly Investing in the planet. This god metal is based on Ruin's power, but modified by another Shard's power for his or his Splinter's purposes. We've might have already seen a Splinter who corrupts another Shard's power: Sja-anat, corrupter of spren, most likely Splinter of Odium. It's Sazed's and knows it. He lied to the kandra or made MeLaan lie to Marasi about not knowing the mysterious metal. This is possible because of the manipulative nature of some of Sazed's actions as Harmony. It is harmonium. This might be why Isaac created an Allomantic symbol that is apparently a mixture of atium and lerasium specifically for the Shadows of Self signing. Because harmonium was in Shadows of Self, hiding in plain sight. It is some other purely Scadrian god metal. I already proposed above that it could be an imperfectly-balanced mixture of Ruin and Preservation's power (what I call a shadow of harmonium). Or it could just be an atium alloy. So, which possibility is most likely? Currently I'm choosing between the Autonomy option, the Odium Splinter corrupted the extra Ruin option, and the Harmony is a puppetmaster option. Hopefully Bands of Mourning will resolve this issue for us. Speaking of which, where are the rusting Bands of Mourning sample chapters?!
  9. It's from the Table of Allomantic Metals. It would definitely be awesome if traveling to the past was allowed in the Cosmere. Given the catastrophes that happened in various Shardworlds (particularly Yolen), there's plenty of motivation to want to change the past. I don't think it's likely, but who knows? Cadmium already sends people to the future, but I guess you're thinking of the power to disappear from the present and reappear in the future, right? Will your time traveling power also involve time bubbles (i.e. transfer multiple things at the same time)?
  10. I tried looking for WoBs showing that atium is a part of Ruin's power that Preservation took away. This is the only one I've found so far: This implies that Preservation had some sort of control over the distribution of atium, otherwise there is no point in saying he wanted atium to be useful. Nonetheless, it's not really proof that atium did not exist before Ruin's imprisonment, and I'm having trouble finding WoBs that can conclusively resolve that issue. Fortunately, the books themselves make it quite clear. First, a history lesson from the Hero of Ages: The important thing to note here is that after the creation of humanity, Ruin became more powerful than Preservation. Even after Ruin was imprisoned, he knew that as long as he is eventually freed he'd have the upper hand and would be able to defeat the mindless remnant of Preservation and destroy the world. Except, when he was freed, part of his power was still missing. What was that "thing"? I don't think Ruin would ever want even a bit of his power to be concentrated in metal form, simply because that would weaken him, and as we know Ruin isn't the sacrificing type. The only logical conclusion from that and the above quotations is that Preservation masterminded the atium production in the Pits of Hathsin.
  11. Looks interesting. The Pushing effect would be extra useful against Tineyes. If the user can control the intensity and color of the produced light, this can lead to straight up Scadrian Lightweaving. For the Pulling effect, I like the "getting darker" idea more than the "getting transparent" idea, simply because I'm much too aware of the many scifi "experts" out there who'd scream "Transparent eyes cannot see! He should be blind!" Pedants. I guess a good opposite would be something like Malatium, except instead of seeing the two shadows of "what he has been" and "what he may have been", you see the two shadows of "what he will be if he succeeds in his current goals" and "what he might be if he fails in his current goals", or something similar. What do you think?
  12. Yes, it is a bit overpowered (just like Atium; and Feruchemical Compounding). I'm trying to find limitations for it, and right now I'm thinking maybe time-contraction without a time bubble may not be very safe for living things. Like, maybe it's harder to breathe when air particles around you are moving slower than normal. I don't have enough grasp of the physics and physiology involved, though.
  13. I think there's something I failed to convey properly in describing these powers. Unlike Cadmium and Bendalloy, the targets of Ironsliding and Steelpulsing are not isolated from the outside world by a time bubble. So they can interact with their environment. Physical contact with an Ironsliding object results in becoming part of its time-contracted frame of reference (the exception is the ground, which isn't affected). This means things attached to the Ironsliding object is sped up in time with it. In the case of the Ironsliding skateboarder, imagine him riding his skateboard as normal, using his foot to push on the ground to propel the skateboard as normal, moving at a (to him) normal speed. Except, even as he is moving normally in his own perspective, he looks around and sees that everything else around him has slowed down to a crawl. This is because as he is Ironsliding his skateboard, time contracts for the skateboard as well as him who is in physical contact with the skateboard. To an outside observer, the Ironsliding skateboarder would be moving like a blur, perhaps even too fast to see. Again, the speed increase has nothing to do with an increase in force; it is just the effect of time contraction. Does anyone else want to share their ideas for Allomantic powers?
  14. It makes that more likely, yes. So... I'm back in the Autonomy/Odium camp for now.
  15. *sigh* I found a pretty big counter-evidence for the Splinter theory: Yeah. Oh well. So much for that.
  16. This is true. But remember that Ironsliding's time contraction will still happen even if the target isn't being thrown. While regular Steelpushing can only physically accelerate things away from the user's center of mass, Ironsliding can speed up any process involving metal. You want metallic gears to rotate faster? Just Ironslide it. You want to use a skateboard in a car race? Ironsliding your skateboard's wheels will let you zoom past your opponents, whereas Steelpushing on them will just launch you up in the air.
  17. I originally intended Ironsliding/Steelpulsing to have the same difficulty with Invested metal as with Ironpulling/Steelpushing, meaning both spikes and metalminds would be more difficult to affect. But then I thought about Ruin's Intent, and how accelerating Hemalurgic decay would actually promote that Intent. If anything, Ruin's power should help that along. So I went ahead and made spikes easier to Ironslide. You can't Ironslide a spike that's inside a person, though. The Hemalurgic decay has to be active, meaning it should be outside of a person. So how will that be useful? Imagine Ironslider ninjas who use shuriken as weapons. By using Hemalurgic shuriken, they won't have to burn as much to achieve the desired time contraction because of the boost given by Hemalurgic decay. I forgot to mention that I picture Ironsliding as Atium-Iron Allomancy and Steelpulsing as Atium-Steel Allomancy, but I think that was obvious.
  18. Oh it was findable. That thread was one of the things I loved about the forums when I was a newbie. Actually I wanted to ask you about your Atium-Bendalloy idea. At first read, "Let everyone in your bubble see the future" made me think of a bubble that shows the future, like being in a Cadmium bubble except it's just a vision (so you return to the present after you stop burning), but then you talk of group atium. So is it just like making everyone in the bubble burn atium? Won't that just be confusing since each person will start giving off multiple atium shadows at once (i.e. what happens when two people burn atium at the same time)? Or did I misunderstand you?
  19. Ooh, I think I remember that post now, Voidus! Yeah, being able to Push/Pull atium shadows of metal objects sounds cool. Here's my first contribution: Like your Iron/Steel+Atium idea, these are External Temporal powers that target metals. There's no atium shadows involved, though. Instead of Allomantic lines appearing from metallic objects (as in Iron and Steel), metallic objects simply appear to glow for the user while these powers are being used. These powers do not affect anything anchored to the ground, made of aluminum, or inside a person (unless Mist is used), just like Iron and Steel. The Pushing power (which I call Ironsliding) contracts time for metal objects. For example, any chemical reaction occurring in a metal object being Ironslided will accelerate, and a metallic projectile being Ironslided will move much faster along its trajectory. This increase in relative speed does not translate into an actual increase in kinetic energy, so you cannot expect to kill people by Ironsliding a tiny metal pellet that was manually thrown; its trajectory and the energy it transfers to anything it hits will be the same as if you never used Ironsliding. It (and everything in direct contact with it) will just appear really, really fast to observers outside of its frame of reference. Hemalurgic spikes glow brighter in an Ironslider's perspective and it is easier to Ironslide Hemalugic spikes than normal metal (as long as they are outside of a body). Metalminds with stored Investiture glow dimmer, and are harder to Ironslide. This is because Hemalurgic decay is "pro-change", while Feruchemical storage preserves attributes in the metal and is therefore "anti-change". Applications: Speed up chemical reactions involving metal. Fly a car or a plane really fast without experiencing g-forces (since from the vehicle's frame of reference it is still going at normal speeds). Speed up any self-contained automated device. If a person is wearing special gear to protect from time contraction effects, using an Ironslided weapon can basically grant the appearance of "Steelrunning". The Pulling equivalent of Ironsliding is Steelpulsing, which dilates time for metal targets, slowing them down. Basically the opposite of Ironsliding. Again, no actual change in kinetic energy occurs in the target even as it slows down from your perspective; if you stop Steelpulsing, it will continue moving as if you never Steelpulsed it. Hemalurgic spikes are harder to Steelpulse, while metalminds are easier to Steelpulse. Applications: Slowing bullets in mid-air (like Neo! except the bullets don't fall down afterwards) Slowing down a car that's about to hit someone. Detaining people by Steelpulsing a metal object on their person. The effects on humans holding Ironsliding or Steelpulsing objects are unknown. It depends on whether humans can handle time contraction or dilation without being inside something like a vehicle or a bubble of air (as in Cadmium/Bendalloy) around them. Can anyone help me with this problem?
  20. Please post your two favorite Pull/Push pairs from your list first. We've got plenty of time! Let me explain. I feel that if people post too much at a time, some of the powers they suggest might not be discussed as much as they would like, because analyzing the whole thing will be a big chore. I think it's better this way. I hope you understand.
  21. The purpose of this thread is for people to suggest ideas for Allomantic powers that are not mentioned in the books, and for others to analyze these "fake"/"new" Allomantic powers. Who knows? Maybe some of the powers you'll come up with have actually been planned for future books (e.g. as the Allomantic power of an atium alloy or some other god metal). That would be pretty neat, wouldn't it? I know that @EdroGrimshell has a similar thread, which is pretty interesting, but I intend this one to be much smaller in scope since it's only for Allomancy. Also, there are rules: The powers must fit within the Allomantic categories of Internal/External and Pulling/Pushing. Feel free to ignore the four quadrants (Physical, Mental, Enhancement, Temporal) and create your own "quadrant". You may simply comment on other people's ideas if you don't want to share your own. Otherwise you need to suggest at least two powers, a Pulling power and its Pushing counterpart. Don't suggest more than four powers in a single post. You may suggest more after another person has had his chance. Feel free to talk about the Twinborn possibilities of the your new Allomantic powers, but you can only use the 16 base Feruchemical powers and Feruchemical atium. No fake Feruchemy, please. Try to be available to answer people's questions about the powers. I'll post my first contribution later. Have fun! Update: Here are the entries we have so far: Voidus Skaa Thunder_93 (1st, 2nd) SirTraconus 50Metals Stormgate Thermophile ChickenPlague (1st, 2nd) Xel-Hassodin (lots of cool ideas from an RPG wiki; h/t to MistLord)
  22. I wouldn't call it stupid, but I'm biased. If you look at that thread, you'll find that many others like that theory. I have personally changed my mind since then, not because of anything conclusive, but because others here have led me to an idea that, to me, is more awesome. But knowing Brandon, he probably thought of something even more awesome than either idea.
  23. Here's one I just thought up: Nightwatcher gave Lift her ability to convert food to Stormlight before Wyndle bonded her. If Wyndle dies (Almighty forbid!), will Lift still be able to use her food-based Stormlight in any way? For example, to heal herself?
  24. Vive la révolution! Just kidding. Pardon my rebel skaa humor, Your Imperial Highness. Enjoy your stay!
  25. Hello and welcome to the forums, Your Sticky Imperial Majesty! You know, I hear there are great opportunities for a distinguished monarch such as yourself in the exciting new field of Spark Transformation. Would you be interested in becoming fire?
