  1. While doing research on Seons, I re-read the scene where Hrathen was talking to the potions maker Forton via Seon. Forton is from Hrovell, one of the nations under the Fjordell Empire. Forton can apparently create potions that can counteract poisons that have no known antidote. He was also able to create potions that make someone temporarily look like a Fallen Elantrian. What I'm wondering is if Forton is just a very clever chemist, or if his potions are actually magical. If they are in fact Invested substances, it would imply that this is Hrovell's regional manifestation of Investiture. But if the potions are Invested, how would that work given the requirement of having specific shapes/forms in Selish Investiture? What would be the Forms behind Hrovell Investiture? I can think of a few possibilities: One is that the molecular properties of the potions act as the Form, but that sounds a bit too much like the Metallic Arts. Another is that Forton might be arranging potion ingredients in a certain way to activate their magical properties before combining them. Still another idea involves Hrovell's roughly circular shape: Perhaps the Forms exist in the way a potion is stirred, whether clockwise or counterclockwise, whether in full turns, half turns, etc as well as the duration of stirring. Yes, I know this sounds very Harry Potterish, but specific stirring directions did seem to exist in medieval potions recipes so Brandon might have been inspired by that. What do you guys think? Are Forton's potions Invested? What other ideas do you have regarding possible Forms in potions making? UPDATE: They are Invested.
  2. You mean Aon Rao? I agree that some sort of power augmentation can be expected when using the purest form of a Shard's Investiture, but that doesn't necessarily make power augmentation the only thing to look for when identifying "god Foci". After all, nicrosil and duralumin lead to some awesome Allomantic effects, but they're not god metals. For all we know, Aon Rao augments both Devotion and Dominion Investitures, depending on which Aon is being used. Aon Omi can also enhance power, and is much more attuned to Devotion's Intent. The Focus on Sel are the Forms that are based on specific regions on Sel. Aons are the Forms based on the region of Arelon, so they are the Focus of Arelish Investiture. Other regions have other Foci. You may read the Coppermind article on it for more details.
  3. I just checked, and it seems we've reached the maximum number of participants allowed in a PM conversation. Sorry for getting your hopes up, guys. I honestly didn't know. I'll check back here later if the limit is increased or if some slots are freed up.
  4. There is a PM thread for those who've read both Aether of Night and White Sand. If you've read White Sand, then I could add you there.
  5. Speaking of "an Aon thematically compatible with Devotion", Aon Omi does seem to be somewhat special: The Dor is a mixture of Devotion and Dominion, but I wonder if using Aon Omi can somehow filter out the Dominion part of the Dor to produce pure Devotion Investiture. Of course, one would also have to ask if there are forms that attune to pure Devotion or to pure Dominion on other Selish regions. Are there Fjordell characters that represent Dominion and (dare I say) Devotion, and what do they do in Dakhor? Is there a ChayShan move that unleashes pure Dominion in battle? Do Jindo marriage rituals involve a Devotion-based ChayShan move? Is it easier to create Essence Marks that make the target more devoted to something? Do Bloodsealers use a Dominion glyph to control skeletals? For that matter, is there an Aon that releases pure Dominion Investiture?
  6. And then you take her out to dinner at the nearest McDonald's. Why? Because Big Macs are evil, and it is terrible destruction to eat. (That was, of course, a joke. Do not take relationship or dietary advice from lonely unfit dweebs who've never been in a relationship.)
  7. Rusts! I'm still the only Filipino Sharder (after quitecontrary left). I'd recruit my only Sanderson-loving friend, but she's quitecontrary. Filipino lurkers, delurk! Also, thanks for this, The Young Bard. *upvotes*
  8. I hit the quota yesterday. I don't even remember upvoting ten posts, which makes me wonder if I'm accidentally tapping green buttons while navigating threads on my phone. Or maybe I'm just more generous than I think I am.
  9. I imagine the kandra would need to have a spiritual connection to the Fjordell Empire for the Dakhor bones to do anything special to him. If a kandra does achieve connection to Fjordell, I wonder if creating an artificial Dakhor True Body would work, or if the material of the skeleton is important to Dakhor Investiture.
  10. Here's a brief summary of the rabies situation in the Philippines. I've never heard of anyone here getting fined or imprisoned for not vaccinating their dogs. People are simply encouraged to get shots within 24 hours of getting bitten by any animal, even your own pet. I got bitten days ago and only went for treatment today, but the doctor didn't seem worried, so I guess that's good. I don't have any fear of needles, thankfully, so today's injections weren't much of a problem. I also don't mind the series of shots I need to take over the next few weeks (unless the puppy survives by next week, because that would mean it didn't have rabies after all). There's one thing that can be connected to this thread's discussion on mental health issues. The doctor reminded me that being overly anxious about disease could indicate psychological problems. Unfortunately, psychiatric services are *not* affordable here and are usually not covered by health insurance, so I don't intend to see a shrink any time soon. I'll just have to learn to control my anxiety by myself.
  11. During my New Year's Eve visit to my parents' house, a neighbor's puppy bit my leg. After seeing that there was no bleeding (my jeans wasn't even damaged) nor any visible scratches, and after cleaning the area up with soap and water and then applying iodine and alcohol (didn't even sting), I thought no more about it. It was the holidays, after all, and I felt it was too much of a hassle to get rabies shots. Fast forward to last Sunday. I just came back from an overnight beach party hosted by my client, when I suddenly felt dizzy and weak. My first reaction was that I might have had a wee bit too much whiskey during the party. Then suddenly, and perhaps not very rationally, I remembered that damnation dog. The feeling of dread that came to me then was so strong that I immediately got a glass of water just to see if hydrophobia has set in. No hydrophobia. I drank two glasses just to make sure, and that brought some temporary relief. Then I did something else that may or may not have been very wise. I read the Wikipedia article on rabies. Fever... I did feel kinda warm...check. Weakness, check. Tingling sensation in affected area... maybe, or was I imagining things? As is often the case when self-diagnosing via the Internet, I ended up feeling like my death was imminent. I drank another glass of water. But no, hydrophobia only happens at the final stage of the disease, when it's already too late to save the patient from a horrible, painful end. I drank another glass of water. Part of me was still pretty sure it was just the alcohol, so I spent the whole Monday just resting in my room. I called my parents asking if the puppy that bit me was still alive, and they said it still was and that the owner already put it in a cage. Alas, the anxiety did not disappear. By this morning (Tuesday, Philippine time) I was already half convinced that I could feel the lyssaviruses traveling from my lower left leg up towards the direction of their ultimate target: my brain. So I finally went to the hospital, waited impatiently for my name to be called, fearing the doctor will say I'm too late and that I have hours left to live. At the same time, a part of me was still skeptical, and was worried I'm about to undergo very expensive treatment for nothing. But I knew I won't stop thinking about the possibility until I get the shots, so I went through with it. To make matters worse, I now have to deal with coworkers who seem to be implying that I did weird things while totally drunk during the party. There's a couple of hours' worth of alcohol-induced gap in my memory of that night (the first time I've experienced that phenomenon), and my coworkers won't even tell me exactly what I did. Their cryptic hints have been bugging me all afternoon. I now hate alcohol. And puppies. I might be exaggerating a bit.
  12. I could adapt to any system the admins decide to implement, but I do like the rep+awards idea. It seems like the solution that will satisfy the most number of Sharders.
  13. Here's an old thread about the (probably) Mesopotamian-inspired names of the Unmade. The names of the Unkalaki are intentionally Polynesian-sounding. Brandon said that Alethi names are formed by taking a symmetrical (palindromic) name and replacing one letter or adding a suffix.
  14. I never knew that. Sorry, I guess I missed the announcement. I'll report the user next time.
  15. Theory: Rey is Shmi Skywalker's clone who was raised by Obi Wan Kenobi's secret family. You heard it here first!
  16. I think reading the Liar of Partinel sample chapters might be useful for people who want to join this discussion.
  17. Ruin was part of Adonalsium. I think it's totally possible that there's a ruinous aspect in at least one of Adonalsium's manifestations of Investiture. It probably wasn't necessarily metal-based, though. @DreamEternal is correct. Besides, we know that Hoid has been Lightweaving even before the Shattering.
  18. Also, it might be useful to remember these naming conventions: "Shattering" usually refers to the event when Adonalsium was split into the 16 Shards. A Shard being split is usually termed "Splintering", not "Shattering".
  19. I think the purpose is to show new Sanderson readers (and remind old Sanderson readers) that each cosmere book is part of a bigger story, and that the decisions of certain people can affect lives on multiple planets.
  20. This reminds me of ROSHtafARian's old theory about Splintering Shards by using their Investiture against their Intent. The evidence we find on Roshar appears to point that way, but I don't know if we have any new evidence since that theory was first proposed except perhaps for the WoR scenes showing just how messed up some of the Heralds have become after Aharietiam. Hey! What has Eric ever done to you to deserve that?
  21. If your theory involves Worldhoppers, multiple Shardworlds, multiple Shards, or the Three Realms, you should post it here in the Cosmere Theories forum. If it doesn't involve those, and if it's only about one particular series, you could post it the forum for that series. Some people post series-specific theories here in the Cosmere Theories forum, and nobody ever seems to bother them for it, so I guess that's okay.
  22. Thanks for the interest! Yes, I am aware of that coincidence and possible connection. Back in early 2014, Tempus speculated on how each of the known Shards could be mapped onto Allomantic metals. Note that this was before my epiphany about the difference between the Internal-External and Self-Others categories, so I now consider my own post in Tempus' thread already obsolete.
  23. The earliest discussion on Felt I could find was this from 2014. There was also, of course, your first theory post later that year. I don't think we've had much progress in getting Brandon to comment on that character since then, though. For obvious reasons it's very hard to look for him in the Theoryland database, so maybe I just missed something.
  24. Heh, that was actually why I put the Edit part there. The "store=ruin yourself" is a pattern that's followed by most metals. Anyway, the "lerasium stores something connected to preserving things" rests upon the assumption that god metalminds store something that matches their Shard's Intent. That's clearly not the case with atium, which stores youthfulness.
  25. That's debatable, but if the people above were working under the idea that the pattern is broken in lerasium's case, they never mentioned it. It seems to me that they got confused about which half of Feruchemy (the storing half or the tapping half) actually matches the Shard's Intent in atium's case. Feruchemy is a (presumably balanced) mixture of Preservation and Ruin, so I don't see why one Shard would break the pattern (store=match Shard's Intent, tap=oppose Shard's Intent). Besides, if what you say is true, then both atium and lerasium would match Ruin's Intent when storing (atium=age more, "lerasium"=be more changeable). That doesn't seem right to me. (Edit: Unless if the pattern is actually "storing=Ruin" for all metals, which does fit. Storing involves losing something positive, ruining yourself. That would resolve my issue, but I think it's still important to acknowledge that the Feruchemical attribute being stored in a god metal does not necessarily match the god metal's Shard. Youth does not match Ruin. This could be important if god metals of non-Scadrian Shards start popping up. *cough*) Speaking of breaking patterns, @Minsk Ghoul's idea regarding Pewter Allomancy's connection to Feruchemical powers is very interesting, but again there's something that breaks the pattern. Steel (Speed), pewter (Strength), brass (Warmth), and bronze (Wakefulness) are all alloys, but gold (Health) isn't. That kind of bothers me a bit. Maybe the higher metals (the Spiritual and Hybrid ones) have the opposite pattern, so Pewter Allomancy would have boosted attributes for higher non-alloy metals: Health (gold), Oxygen (cadmium), Identity (aluminum), and Luck (chromium)?
