    Berin grabbed the longer of the two pieces, then immediately jumped under the water to the right of the beast. He used his good hand to latch onto one of the vines, and crawled back up to the eye. He, this time, slid the scale under another scale higher up on the beast’s head, then rammed the stick in the head, using his legs to keep himself on the vines.

    Berin grit his teeth. The thing might com back. He had to be ready. He pulled a thin strip of the board he was on off, using the scale to cut it and sharpen it. The result was a long, sharp pole. He planned to use it for the eye, or another loose scale.
