Immediately, groups of figures - bleeding, wrapped in bandages, and mumbling - crawled out onto the ground, a few retching. The others had their bandages wrapped tightly around their mouths. Next, a group of four, similarly bandaged, walked from the portal, straight-backed and proud. They stood at attention as a new, not bandaged, figure stepped from the portal.
