  11. The wind stopped for a moment. The rain paused. Time itself seemed to stop moving. The Thread was holding its breath. Cricket advanced, lowering his blade towards Rebus. That monster . . . he had taken everything from him. His friends, his life, his very soul. He would make him pay. Rebus had outplayed him at every turn, driving Cricket to despair. And now, he held all the cards. "Rebus." he said quietly, spitting his name out with as much venom as possible. "After everything you've done . . . I wouldn't be lying to say you deserved this. I swore to avenge my friends. And now, I finally can. I told you, a long time ago, I'd have my vengeance. And now . . . Rebus, I am your reckoning." He raised the sword, preparing to bring it down upon his enemy. This is for Bat, he thought. You are not the Protagonist. came a voice, a different voice, echoing in his head. "What?" he blinked, pausing. You are not the Protagonist. "I . . ." Cricket frowned. "I know that. What does that have to do with . . . with anything? He's my enemy." You are not the Protagonist. It is not your right, or your responsibility. It is not your duty to slay the Antagonist. Cricket blinked again. "That . . ." He was not the Protagonist. This was true. He glanced at Redemption, pulsing amidst the stone. He'd had to let go, in order to keep Redemption. Let go of his guilt over his friend's death. Why couldn't he do the same for Rebus? Why must he avenge them, if he had moved on? He was not the Protagonist. Another should come, would come and defeat Rebus, defeat the Antagonist. So why stop the natural order of things? If he slew Rebus here, the entire Thread could be imbalanced. He could risk anything. Cricket . . . you have done well. Served valiantly. Now let others come in, finish your work. You've done what you can. You are not the Protagonist. He glanced one more time at Rebus, lying on the stones, and for the first time noticed how pitiful he seemed. Any vestige of former glory had faded from the form before him. Then, he sighed. "If it is what you wish." His fingers loosed on the grip of his sword, and the blade clattered to the stones. He knelt on one knee before Rebus. "I . . . surrender." he said quietly, and bowed his head, awaiting his judgement.
  12. Cricket parried, smiling. He was losing blood fast, but he had Rebus. He knew it. His foe was getting reckless, sloppy. Then, he stepped forward, feinting. He feinted two more times, watching Rebus lose steam. Then he struck. He no longer fought with precision, control. Instinct, rage fueled his every movement. He stepped forward, ruthlessly, swinging and slicing with the mind of a man knowing he was dying. Around them, the rain finally began to come down, the gusts lashing their faces and whipping their hair about. The storm had truly come.
  13. Cricket parried the blow, breathing hard, and tried to circle around him, slicing at his side.
  14. Cricket smiled wanly. "I've always been ready to die." He stood up fully, pointing his sword at Rebus once more. "C'mon, then. Come at me."
  15. Cricket turned too late, the sword slicing through the blazer of his jet black suit and leaving a thin gash of blood behind. He swore, staggering backwards, trying to recoup.
  16. Their blades locked, even as Cricket met his enemy's gaze, holding it for just a moment. This man, this monster, had done so much to him, to the Thread. He deserved what was coming for him, but now . . . now, he needed to be a soldier. No room for emotion in warfare. He felt Rebus shift, knew the kick was coming. Trying to dislocate his leg was dangerous, the move of a bastard. Cricket smiled, twisting even as Rebus moved, and wrenched his sword away, letting Rebus' momentum carry him forward.
  17. Cricket smiled. "I know that pain as well. I've spent eternities in silence, depending on my Author to move, to speak. Do you see me break?" He couldn't tell if his taunting had any actual effect on Rebus, but he needed to strike regardless. He leapt forward, feinting to the left before slashing at Rebus's right.
  18. "A solider is a man who knows the battlefield." Cricket said, jumping aside. He was half a second too slow, however, and the blade nicked his shoulder. Cricket stood, feeling blood drip down his sleeve. "A soldier is a man who knows what blood feels like." he said, slowly, advancing. "Who's seen light fade in the eyes of their brothers. Have you, Rebus?" He took another step. "Do you know the scent of blood? The sound of a bone snapping? The feeling of a bomb exploding in your face, a bullet passing through your arm?" "You're no soldier, Rebus. You've never suffered. You've never even felt pain."
  19. Cricket took a step forward. "You know the difference between us, Rebus? I'm not a fighter, nobody can deny that. But I am a solider. That's something you'll never be. Sure you can duel, but you're no soldier."
  20. agnahhahn you back Cricket sidestepped the blow, cursing and jabbing at Rebus's side. This wasn't a fight he could win on his own. Their skills were equally matched. He needed the upper hand. He needed to enrage the Antagonist.
