People who know ASL (or other sign languages) club
Dalluminum replied to strmblsd's topic in Social Groups, Clans, & Guilds
I recognize this is an old thread, but figured I'd say something here anyway. I've been learning ASL for a while. It's absolutely amazing! Not super fluent yet, but that's the goal. I want to start coming up with signs for Cosmere words, so if anyone else is interested or has any ideas please let me know! -
I think Resonances are super cool, and I hope we get to see them applied to more magic systems in future books. I like these theories. One thing I'd like to add: to what extent could a Bondsmith manipulate Resonances? If a F-Duralumin allows for strengthening/weakening Resonances, it seems reasonable that a Bondsmith could as well. Also, how far can Resonances be pushed? We see some pretty extreme examples between the two surges of each order of the Knights Radiant (that's Resonance, right? I'm not making that up?), but what could that look like for a Mistborn? Is Kelsier's absurd control over his Pushes and Pulls a result of Resonance between Iron and Steel? Thanks for this thread; I don't think Resonance gets talked about enough. Hopefully someone finds these musings of mine to be interesting!

Two scenes that make me cry: Mistborn Book 1: Emperor's Soul: Again, not sure how "small" these moments are, but they hit me every time. I also love the scene in Mistborn when Spook is talking in street slang and Kelsier is jokingly joining in. When Dockson does too... it just makes me laugh so hard. The bonding between the crewmembers in this scene and the happy environment Vin gets to see... it's just an awesome scene.

Soulstamp Shenanigans
Dalluminum replied to Through the Living Heir's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Randomly pick a book to buy (maybe with dice or something), and buy it. Later, if you want to read another book, stamp the book into believing you had picked another book. -
The first time I read Elantris was (if I remember right) directly after my first reading of the first Mistborn trilogy, and I felt similarly to how you do. It kind of felt really open-ended. Mistborn is super specific in what it does, and AonDor felt like the opposite. I still loved the book, but the magic didn't click with me as much as Mistborn. "Oh well," I thought, "it was his first published book after all." Recently, however, I re-read Elantris, and I really started to appreciate AonDor as a magic system. I now see it as Brandon taking the super generic type of magic and giving it what I think of as "Sanderson flair." You're right that a magic system that can just do anything is often less interesting, but I personally feel that the learning curve was a brilliant way to limit the system. It allows magic-users to focus on knowing a lot of kinds of magic, or to be really good at one aspect of it. You can know every Aon and still be unable to heal as well due to not knowing the right modifiers. This post really resonated with me. I've absolutely felt the same dissatisfactions with AonDor, but I've grown to love it to the point that it's probably one of my top three favorite magic systems of all time. Thanks for listening!

What is your favourite Aon?
Dalluminum replied to Adonalsium'sSpren's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Just gotta say, I love the way the appearances of the Aons reflects their meaning. It's such a cool way to work a magic system I didn't really appreciate the first time I read Elantris. This is why I love Shao so much. Edo and Ehe are also up there on the list. -
I agree with this interpretation. I would think the parts would stay Forged, but their Identity would combine to become a table. My question, though, is what happens if you try to stamp the table once it's been assembled? Would it not work at all (because Investiture resists Investiture), or would the table take the stamp? To my knowledge, we don't have any examples of a stamped object being stamped again, so it might just be impossible. How does Identity interact in something like a door? A doorknob is distinct from the rest of the door, but stamping the door would probably affect the doorknob. Would a stamp on the door overwrite one on the knob? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Feedback on my Own Shapeshifting Selish Magic System
Dalluminum replied to Atlas333's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Love it! This definitely has the feel of a Selish magic system, and the mechanics look good. Some of my thoughts: I think this is a cool concept, and I like the idea of your "favorite" masks lasting a little longer. As has been mentioned with the whole mass thing, I think adding an element of skill to the duration would fit Sel nicely. Pretty much every aspect of every system we've seen benefits from an increase in skill. Maybe there are symbols that amplify the duration, similar to how Aon Daa can act as an amplifier in AonDor, or maybe more precision in the ritual could result in a higher quality mask. Another thought I had was "what about savantism?" We don't really have examples of savantism on Sel, so I don't know if Brandon has anything specific in mind for how that would work. Minor Elantris spoiler: For your system, I suggest something similar to what we've seen in Soulcasting savants. Maybe you become strongly Connected to a specific mask, and can last much longer than usual. Maybe that Connection results in thinking like that animal whether or not you are wearing the mask. Maybe the transformation even has a gradual, permanent effect on your body. There are a lot of ways it could go, especially with how little we have concerning Selish savants. Once more, cool system! I've always loved the Selish magic systems, and this feels like a really good exploration of other systems that would be possible. Keep it up! -

Feruchemical Duralumin: what can it do?
Dalluminum replied to Trusk'our's topic in Cosmere Discussion
My understanding of F-Duralumin is as follows. Storing Connection would affect how memorable you are to others (as alluded to by Marsh as Atlas333 mentioned), and may have the same effect on you, because Connection is a two-way thing. Tapping Connection does something similar to what Dalinar does when he Connects to people to understand their language. If I remember correctly (and it's been a while since my last read-through of era 2, so correct me if I'm wrong), there are medallions that allow for translation via Connection. In my head, (no WoBs that I know of) a Surgebinder could Store their Connection to their spren, resulting in less efficient Stormlight usage, and Tap that Connection to get the opposite effect. This could potentially do the same for an allomancer by strengthening/weakening their Connection to Preservation. My biggest question: can you isolate your individual Connections, or do you store your ability to Connect as a whole? If it's the first (similar to tin), my theories above work. If it's the second, they don't.- 9 replies

I love this idea! I think the reason there is so much focus on pairing Dawnshards is how much emphasis there is on pairing Shards and powers in the Mistborn series, but (again as previously stated on this thread) not everything has an opposite in the Cosmere. Your system has a natural way of explaining the opposite natures of Preservation and Ruin (which in turn explains how much opposition and polarization there is in the magic systems on Scadrial). I also love the implications of Hoid's Dawnshards being tied to Creation. I've had a very hard time placing Virtuosity in my system, but having a Dawnshard tied to Creation (and heavily tied to art) helps with that problem. Hoid's obsession with art would also be explained by this Dawnshard, whether he got the Dawnshard that naturally lined up with his interests or his interests were influenced by the Dawnshard he held. Here is the state of my personal speculation. The only ones I'm having trouble with are Autonomy and Virtuosity, who don't seem to fit anywhere. I may revise my ideas without so much focus on opposing Commands. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

This was my original thought. If Feruchemy works by storing Investiture in pieces of metal, with the effect stored affected by the structure of the metal, then it seems like having another type of Investiture (especially if it was already keyed to you) could still work because the metal would tell the Breath how to behave. Isn't this essentially how compounding works? The metal you burn is charged Feruchemically, so when you burn the metal, the flood of Investiture from the SR takes on the Feruchemical properties. I guess it might take a little bit of charge in the metalmind to provide a mold for the Breath (think tinminds storing separate senses), but that should still be possible (if maybe a little harder). Does everything I've said sound right? Do I have a fundamental flaw in my understanding of Feruchemy? Thanks for being patient with me!

Okay, follow-up question. If you put your Breath in a piece of metal and tried to use it as a metalmind... would that work? That seems like it would maybe work: the Investiture is already keyed to you... Thoughts?

What would happen if you stored your Breaths in a piece of metal, then burned that metal Allomantically? Would the Breaths dissipate, becoming unusable? Would you get them back? Or... would we see something similar to compounding? My friend asked this question, and it's been a while since my last reading of Warbreaker. I couldn't find this question anywhere, so I'm asking it!

I would probably choose Thaylena. The science and culture there fascinates me, and I think it would be cool to try to learn a writing system with no vowels.

No problem! Oh, and I also read (and loved) Legion.

Yeah, I read the Alcatraz series a while ago, I've read the Reckoners, the Skyward series, the Rithmatist, and I just finished The Frugal Wizard's Handbook etc.

I've read The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings/The Silmarillion, most of Brandon's other books, quite a bit of Isaac Asimov's books, Dune books 1-3... and a lot more, but those are some of the highlights!

Hey guys! My name is Dalluminum. I'm currently a High Schooler with too much time on my hands. I love playing games (board games, card games, video games, you name it!), love math (yep, I'm a nerd (as if my presence on this website wasn't enough evidence (or the fact that I used triple parenthesis))), love computer programming and (of course) love to read. I remember back when I was just a little guy, and the world building and magic system of Harry Potter blew my mind. Fast forward to my 14th birthday, when I got the Mistborn trilogy as a gift. The next day we went on a long car ride... and I spent the ENTIRE time reading. I finished book one the next day, and was hooked on the Cosmere. As it currently stands, I've read everything Cosmere. If you asked me what my favorite book is, I would just say the entire Cosmere. I've done a little personal speculation on the Cosmere, and I'm super excited to be a part of this community!

The way Hoid seems to Connect to just about every known Shard is a little suspicious, but recombining them all into one doesn't really sound like Hoid to me. I personally speculate that he might be working for a Cosmere-wide unity or something. By spreading knowledge of the Cosmere, he would forge Connections between different cultures and people... (Sunlit Man spoilers) That's just me, though, totally up for personal interpretations!

Kaladin will seek to flee Roshar through lashing himself into space over and over again, crash-land on Scadrial, and rename himself Kelsier.
